Love's Wind is a little bitter today...
Kinda small and somewhat disjointed, but it's anime fans wanking again.

AnimeonDVD recently posted a review of the first volume of Koi Kaze, an anime that revolves around a brother and sister and their feelings for each other.

Over on the forum page, people are generally kind. A few people are creeped out by the subject matter, but most agree that Koi Kaze is a pretty good little show.

However, someone has to point out the obvious. This begins a few pages of (polite) debate over whether or not incest is genetic. Then indigo0086 feels the need to start something.

From that point on, the rest of the discussion turns into a half-successful debate and a string of supposed zingers/attempts at showing off.

Some highlights:

I AM NOT AN ANIMAL! I AM A HUMAN BEING!

I'll show you how liberal I can be!

"What's so wrong with incest?" Teiresias has an answer.

There are no words.

At least we know the title 'pervert king' was earned.

Koi Kaze had incest? Damn, I knew I should have kept watching past the first episode.

Oh, not incest wank again.

Teiresias spelled his username wrong.

And not just his username. Hemophelia is presumably what Laertes' kids would've had if he'd knocked up his sister. And cleft pallets. Heh. Who knew incest could have effects on shipping and storage?

Oh, I didn't even follow the link. How lovely.

You are totally being metaquoted.

Not to mention that cleft palates have nothing to do with inbreeding. But, hey, he was on a roll: no reason to let details get in his way!

It's not that incest has effects on shipping, it's that incest is shipping.

Yay homonyms!

Sure thing! Dominic Deegan: Oracle for Hire. I'd reccommend starting from the beginning, since it turns into a pretty plot-oriented strip, and it's still pretty much on the first or second story arc(I just finished reading through all the archives myself; it was well worth it).

...And, yeah, the icon was completely out of context. I don't think there's actually any incest in the strip. :P

I still think all these people who say, "What's so WRONG and ICKY about brother/sister romance!?" must not have any brothers or sisters. If they had to deal with the competition, arguements, and general "MOOOOOM SHE PUT HER HAND ON MY SIDE OF THE CAR SEAT!"-ness of siblinghood and still think getting all horned up over thoughts of your brother/sister is a-ok, something's slighlty off.

oh crap, that is what I thought too.

I actually have a brother and would never, ever want to know him in the Biblical sense, but I don't know how I feel about other siblings/family relations engaging in incest. If they are over the age of consent, is it our job to object?

As a smart mousie pointed out in the last incest wank, there's a world of difference between an incestuous relationship with a power gradient (parent/child) and one without (cousins). In the latter, the sexual relationship isn't questionable because of the consanguinity, it's questionable because of the issues of coercion engendered by the preexisting power relationship. It's the same reason a teacher/student relationship is questionable.

Oh, I don't object--assuming age of consent, and etc., I just shove that one into the "not my business" category. I was an only child, so I have no idea how people feel about real siblings (from my friends I gather it's usually "affectionate but irritated").

But yeah, it adds a pervy note to all the familiar whining.

I don't think it's all that wrong, but I'm not gonna go out and fuck my siblings either. They're assholes. (and dude, if one of them had put their hand on my side of the seat, they wouldn't have gotten it back without a bruise or two.)

(Reply to this)(Parent)(Thread)

Eh, I probably shouldn't have used the word "wrong", as I would not barge in on consensual, appropriately-aged incestuals and screech, "RELATED FOOOOOOORNICATOOOOOOORS!" Doesn't mean I have to like it, though.

I have an asshole sibling too, and I think it's the years we have spent trying to make the other's life a living hell that makes me completely unable to comprehend incest and its advocates. I mean, why? There are millions of fish in the sea, why does it have to be the fish you hatched with when there's a hot flounder on the other side of the reef?

Yeah, I know where you're coming from with that. I'm sort of the 'live and let live set' cause even though it doesn't bother me, I don't want to SEE it.

As for your question, I'd never really thought about it before. A lot might have to do with self-esteem, familiarity, or even just plain validation. It's weird, yeah, but not completely impossible for someone to have those reasons.

There's also a thing studied called Genetic Sexual Attraction. GSA is usually found between siblings separated at childhood who come together later in life, but who's to say the Westermark effect can't be disrupted even if siblings do grow together.

Proven wrong.

I honestly think that if two people are in love, it doesn't matter if they're related or not. Doesn't mean I'd want to sleep with my brother, it just means that if someone ELSE wants to sleep with their brother, it's not my business to say they can't.

when one is 12 years older than the other, then I could answer your question.

Okay, what? Because that sounds like s/he will only answer that question if the person asking it is twelve years older or younger than someone else.

I think the person is saying it's wrong because the brother in the series is 12 years older than the sister.

My brother and I used to make incest jokes all the time (partly because during the 70's and early 80's we were constantly tormented with stupid incest comments and jokes because my family is from Newfoundland) but you know, we'd never even consider truly boffing each other six ways to Sunday in reality. Even suggesting it for real elicts a huge EWWWWWWWWWWWW from both of us.

Aside from that...incest taboos are largely cultural rather than instinctual/genetic. There are likely factors built into our psychology which does create some sort of incest taboo (as Westermark has shown) but it's largely reinforced and made stronger by society.

Sibling incest in my gut reaction is just plain creepy, but when I think about it and put the gut reaction aside, if the parties are old enough and consent...then er...whatever floats their boat.

For me though, I'll stick with the gut reaction. >.
