RPS/RPF + Ginmar = Wank
[info]neadods makes a "RPS/RPF is bad, mmmkay?" entry here. As expected, wank follows.

Look for the inevitable "It's just like rape!" "Uh...not even close." argument, complete with Ginmar spooging all over the place and making personal attacks.

There's also the "Plz stop presenting your opinion as the RIGHT opinion kthx." "That's not what she said. P.S. You're wrong." debate. Again, many charming contributions from Ginmar.

This thread comparing RPS/RPF defenders to NAMBLA hasn't reached epic wank proportions but I expect it to explode before too long.

Finally, here the OP proves that she doesn't know the difference between slash and porn.

Good times.

ETA: Bonus "Think about the chirrun!" mini-wank here.

Son of ETA: The OP whines about being wanked and also compares the Terry Schiavo case to RPF. No, really.

You literally wanked this ten minutes after I jumped in with waders on.

I'm seriously amused.

You know, I get the impression that the anti-RPF and the anti-slash contingent want the RPF/slash people to read this and go, "OH MY GOD! You're right! What have I been doing with my life?" Then renounce writing that "creepy" and "illegal" stuff.

Sadly, this never happens. Just like you don't see smokers giving the eye to the warning label on their cigarettes and suddenly trashing their pack with a, "For the grace of God, I'm giving this up! I almost DIED!"

The 'anti crowd' will continue to wail, and the writers on the other side will continue to write. Nothing changes.

The anti crowd just wastes their time preaching to their own narrow-minded chorus.

Random: I totally thought Trey & Matt from South Park made NAMBLA up for an episode. I didn't know it was a real organization until like, a couple months ago when I listened to the Season 3 DVD commentary. [/random].

Okay, RPF - all real-person fics, not just the ones featuring Real Person Sexx0rs - squicks me. I don't feel that it's right to treat a real, living person as a fictional character.

That being said, I realise that other people have different opinions about what is rightfully public domain. I realise that there are quite a lot of grey areas, such as TV/movie fics, where writers use the actor's appearance (though not, obviously, his/her personality) - which means that, while imagining two characters together, in visual terms you're also imagining two actors together. So really, where's the line? I know where I draw it for myself, but it's not my place to draw it for others.

In other news, I think the world would be a much better place if Ginmar knocked back a nice cold glass of STFU.

1. I have seen ginmar's icon like six hundred times before, and I've always thought it was a gray muppet with little beady eyes. Today I looked closely and it turns out that it is an ostrich (or similar bird). My mind is officially blown.

2. "Are any of us fit to judge?"

If judging is not acceptable, then why is RPFing?

Once again, she misses the point.

3. I'd also like to address the person above who asked about historical figures. They're....historical.

Ahaha. Paging the Department of Redundancy Department. ginmar, you have a phone call on line 2.

Personally, I dislike RPS/RPF and therefore, I don't read it. However, I don't think people who do read/write it are unethical. It's just a personal preference.

On the other hand, I'm also in the position where I know people or know very good friends of people who are being slashed, and even knowing fiction like that about them exists makes me really uncomfortable.

Discussion continues on this post of the OP. "I posted six times about abortion but everyone pays attention to the RPF post!!!" http://www.livejournal.com/users/neadods/158252.html

Um, could that be because they're tired of discussing abortion or agree with you, whereas they actually disagree with you on RPF because they might write it themselves?

I am not going to wank all over that thread. But all these arguments have been addressed a hundred thousand times. We are kicking bloody lump of horse meat. Get the fuck over it already.

And OMG, Ginmar, STFU.

You know, I don't like or read RPF in general. But dude, rape? Maybe I'd take you seriously if your arguments made any fucking sense.

Shadowlands

I don't buy the petty notion that once a famous person is dead, anything written about them automatically becomes respected historical/biographical fiction. If you do not remain completely true to what actually happened in real life, including verbatim dialogue, it becomes derivative fiction with a real person standing in for a story base. If you can write fiction about real people when they're dead, you can certainly write it about them when they're alive.

For instance:

Plastic Jesus (Poppy Z Brite's thinly veiled story about The Beatles)
Primary Colors
Being John Malkovich (which could be said is an excellent example of an AU RPF)
Velvet Goldmine (also thinly veiled David Bowie/Iggy Pop)

There are a lot more examples. Anyone?

I once said I wanted one of those threads that went all over LJ, and now I've certainly learned to be careful what I ask for.

*looks at recent posts* Hmmm, pro-choice and the schiavo case... Someone seems to like their comment count going up despite cries to the contrary. May I suggest next post is about Republican furries with Asperger's?

Highly amused to have been even marginally included in this report. I gave up debating with [info]ginmar when my frustration migraine started to get out of hand.

And, for the record, though I took the opposite point of view to hers, the OP is not actually a closed-minded person in almost any subject you can name. Not that I'm defending her POV on this particular topic...

Thanks for the report, though. Highly entertaining.

Ahhh, here's an exchange from the comments on the OP's whine:

I'm having serious brain whiplash because everyone there seems to be focused on "Well, if ginmar is on one side, ALL THINKING PEOPLE are on the other." Whereas the people I've hung around with tend to respect Ginmar nigh onto pedastal status (no offense intended, ginmar).

Gin, bless her, posts stridently (and I mean that in a good way, before anyone jumps on me). That makes some folk just want to be contrary.

Huh. Stridently? You say potato, I say batshit. Let's call the whole thing off.

I also think it's hilarious that both of those posters had to include disclaimers that they meant no offense to ginmar, thus preventing cries of "RAPE!" and "Your claims are unfounded! You have no proof!" It's like putting baby-locks on the cabinets.

Fictional people doing fictional things is a victimless crime.

I wonder if the creators of those fictional characters would feel that way.

I don't like RPF or RPS. Don't like it, don't read it, don't even want to think about it. I avoid it at all costs.

That's my personal thing, and it's my choice and my fucking right.

It is not my fucking right to tell other people not to read, write or talk about it.

How many people admit having sexual fantasies about [insert teh hawt actor/actress here]? One of my favorite comics, Bill Engvall, has a bit about having a "romantic" dream about himself and Shania Twain in the mountains. Does that mean he's stalking Shania? Do you think she should have him arrested?

True, I wouldn't think of writing down my fantasies involving my personal hot flash of the moment *ahem*, but that's me.

"neadods" has every right to believe that RPF/RPS is bad, wrong, illegal, immoral, fattening, carcinogenic, kills kittens, rapes goats, and/or makes baby Jesus cry. She also has a right to voice her displeasure/disagreement in her LJ or anywhere else she chooses to post.

Where she crosses the line, I believe, is when she starts telling people what to write and what not to write. "I don't like it" is one thing. "If you write RP fic you're a STALKER!!!111one!!" is another sort of thing altogether.

Hey, Nea: Look behind you. There's the line.

Yeah, okay, I don't like RPF/RPS. It creeps me out, the idea of writing real people as fictional characters. That being said, this is my personal opinion. It doesn't mean it's right, and it sure isn't my prerogative to go around telling people they shouldn't write it. To each his own, I leave it at that.

Also, does Ginmar have wank radar or something? Seems like every time there's a discussion of RPF she jumps in with her waders on, fapping away.
