I'm so mature the rules shouldn't apply to me!
In service of the effort to make fandom_wank essentially a mirror of fanficrants:

I'm under 18 and I want my smut!

I don't totally disagree with the poster (hell, I read porn way before I was 18), but her tone of voice and her responses to comments definitely register at least a 5.0 on the Wanker Scale.

That and the complaining about people using "cuss words" in sex scenes. I thought she said she was so mature?

It's really not doing her "what if the underaged reader is mature?" argument any favors with her fairly immature attitude. So far from what I can tell, her main complaint is something like "Wah, nobody lets me into the cool communities becuz I'm too young and they're OMGsowrong." Which...too bad. Either go read some unprotected smut (because lots of sites just have you click an "over 18" link which, oddly enough, does not have any magical lie detection powers) or lie about your age and get on with your life.

Dude, why is she even bringing attention to herself?

I'm 20, but I started using the internet when I was 12. 8 years ago there were far fewer notions about protecting smutfic from the chilluns', and anime had not yet broken into the mainstream (although the seed was there). So ff.net, not yet the Pit of Voles, was a great place to find smutfic, or at least find smut authors you liked and then do google searches on them.

Occasionally you would find a fic specifying for 18 over, or for mature readers, but of course I would ignore it. Are these people stupid, thinking only warning will keep horny kids away?

And I was 14 when I started collecting yaoi doujinshi, which I continued until I was 16. eBay made this easy. I actually still need to sell it off. Anyone interested in some yaoi doujinshi?

My point: all of my desperate porn seeking was done when I was underage, and boy howdy was it easy, but also I think of it as healthy. It helped me not go out and bonk some guy or girl at my whim so that I could wait 'till I was ready. Because having the capacity to be horny didn't make me ready for sex, but I really needed an outlet.

YAY FOR THE INTERNET! Also late-nite Cinemax helped. My brethren who know the name "Shannon Tweed" will understand.

I think my favorite part of this is still how she argues about how she's definitely mature enough to read smut, absolutely, and then gets into a weird subrant about how she hates "wannabe rappers" who use "cuss words" in their smut because they probably don't know the "actual words." (Horrible "cuss words" like... "ass!" Oh, God, who ever wants to read smut with "ass" in it?!")

Anyone who uses the phrase "cuss words," let alone is righteously indignant about their use, probably should not be reading porn on the internet regardless of their age.

That, unless she starts talking about "OMG TEH MEAN GURLS AT TEH LUNCH TABLE MADE FUN OF MY CLOTHS!!1!" or something, it would probably take them awhile. I've seen far too many adults who don't know what the fuck an apostrophe is for to consider basic punctuation a good yardstick.

Regardless, one somehow suspects that if a "maturity test" actually existed, this little chickadee couldn't pass it.

I can't really comment on the OP of this one for fear of venturing down dark and wanky paths towards insanity, but I will say this: people who are too immature to consider the wishes of the folks who are bringing the (free) fanfiction and (free) fanart and (free) fan discussions, and who want (or are required by law) to keep the smutty side of things adult-only? Those disrespectful people are too immature to be reading it anyway.

"I want it, so I don't care what the rules are or how much trouble you might get in I WANT IT WANT IT SO I AM GOING TO HAVE IT THERE IS NOTHING YOU CAN DO ABOUT IT NEENER!!!11! and also you are rong so there." is not a responsible or mature argument or position to take, and really, only reinforces the validity of having age restrictions anyway.

Question for y'all:

I never thought that allowing minors to read sexually explicit fiction was illegal. I know that some webhosts forbid such material, but that's different.

Have I been wrong all these years? Has anyone ever gotten into legal trouble because a minor read their fanfic? EDUCATE ME.

I worry about turtlemonkey--she seems to have some issues with multiple personalities (not to mention reading comprehension). She'll make a post and reply reasonably to several replies, seemingly intent on deflecting wank, as she does when she starts talking about published slash on the linked thread: "Icon love", "Thanks for telling me; I didn't know that", etc. Then one person will post something that's pretty much identical to earlier replies (this time it's dinpik, last time it was ladybirdsleeps), and she FLIPS HER SHIT. Almost as hilarious as the original poster are all the people suggesting, in all seriousness, that underage readers must restrain themselves from reading fic which has an age restriction because they should respect the author's wishes, or because if they read it "The Man" will somehow magically be alerted and come and shut the site down - and they will thus have *ruined the internet* with their irresponsibility.

Firstly, if you write something and put it out in a public forum, while you may provide a suggestion of the maturity level that your work is aimed at, and it is helpful for you to do so, you do not in fact retain any kind of legal (or in my opinion moral) right to dictate who may or may not read it. Sorry. In any case, I very much doubt any writer who slaps an age restriction on a story actually thinks "OMG, if someone under the age of 18 reads this I'll never be able to live with myself" at any point (as opposed to "well, now my ass is covered").

Secondly, unless the reader is an idiot, there is no conceivable reason why "The Man" should ever find out that he or she has Read Prohibited Pornographic Material. The Man has better things to do than monitoring IP addresses accessing textual internet pr0n, personally tracking them down to physical computers and ensuring that the people at said computers are of legal pr0n-reading age.

The most likely way for any trouble to result purely from the act of a minor reading pr0n is if the loving parents of the minor discover evidence of this and kick up a fuss. So if you have the kind of parents who would sue an online provider for letting you read pr0n, make sure you cover your tracks. This is not hard. If you have parents like that, chances are that you will be better at using the computer than they are.

Obviously if you advertise in every forum that you can find that you are underage and you read restricted fanfiction, like the original poster has done, you may eventually attract unfavourable attention. But even then, unless you actually name the providers involved, you are unlikely to harm anyone. It's not like an ISP is going to trace, abduct and interrogate you on the off chance that it's one of *their* clients who has violated their TOS.

On the internet, age restriction laws are mostly unenforceable. It would be nice if more people realised this and got a grip.
