It's time to DUEL--over dubbing....
Someone complains about how "The Memory World" is being dubbed.

Of course, the common Yu-Gi-Oh complaint is that the dubs are usually "bad"(to me, they just take getting used to) and that they would be edited(I agree that this is not good).

The wank really starts a few days later when RoninGenesis asks thecarp14: "You're really are an idiot thecrap14, the japanese version of Yu-Gi-Oh is for a more mature audience because it has blood and other strong content, while the dubbed version is edited for younger american audience, but how would a thick-headed like you know?"

Thecarp14's reply? "A thick-headed...? A thick-headed _______. Forget something in there?

If only thick-headed people don't like Yu_Gi_Oh, then Earth must be the "Planet of the Thick-Headed People" or something like that."

Brilliant, eh? But, this thread just becomes an anaconda of a snake when posts are being made even NOW about it(thanks to someone who replied to a post about three weeks later). Sheesh. Is this a common occurance at IDMB?

I don't know shit about Yu-gi-oh, I just know that when I walked past my cousins watching it once I was compelled to ask what the fuck was wrong with those peoples voices. That was some terrible voice overs.

When I first caught a glimpse of YGO, my first impression was "OMG! That VOICE! It's too fucking DEEP!" Somehow I grew to like it though. Heh.

The only good thing about 4Kids' dubs is that they do penetrate the skull of newly-awakened adults who can't be fucked to actually pay attention over breakfast, and allow one to easily follow nighttime broadcasts while simultaneously maintaining three different AIM conversations.

Also, shut up about your sister's operation, Joey.

I must be one of the only people who likes the dub. I mean, yeah, it does suck royally in lots of places, but it's like crack to me.

And I have a love for Dan Green. I don't know why, but I do. I blame it on the fact that he was the dub voice for Yami, Glühen Aya and Tsuzuki.

Besides, the dub of YGO is so nice to mock while watching it.

But at least I got my answer to the question of where this season was going to end.

My friend's little brother bought some dubbed VCD's of it over in Singapore and it was different to the one we get in Aus. It was...high pitched. XD Too much fun.

I enjoy the dub, too. I just think of it as an alternate universe to the manga and Japanese versions.

I'm sick of the sub vs dub wank. It's pointless. I agree that going from one version to another takes getting used to sometimes. But it's just a show and entertainment. (I'm bummed at the moment because my friend who tapes One Piece and Shaman King for me while I'm at work set the wrong date this week leaving me cartoon-less.)

I watched Yu-Gi-Oh on TV a few times but I'm not into it. I like the manga more. Lots of sadistic freaks in the manga. Penalty Game!

Also, I think I heard somewhere that the guy that does Yami's voice is the same guy that did Darien for the SM dub. Either way his voice is niiiiiiice....

I couldn't read the whole thing, I was eyerolling so hard. Add the fact they're being so childish over a kid's show just makes it worse.

Y'know, I hate the dub too. So I ... stopped watching the dub. SHOCK! And bought the manga instead, which is awesome.

Okay, so the dub sucks. It really, really, really sucks. Did I mention that it sucks?

But y'know, that's not always a bad thing. It's hilariously bad enough that it'll always be good for a laugh, the edited bits are fun to laugh at (my personal favorite is the Magical Shrinking Cleavage), and some of the lines the dubbers put in are slashy liek whoa.

Even ignoring all that, however, the OP is missing a rather crucial point: The season currently being aired in America is the fourth season. So isn't it just a teensy bit late in the game to start angsting about whether or not 4Kids is going to screw up the AE arc? They've been doing it for the past... oh, one hundred and seventy episodes or so; I don't see why they should stop now.

In other words: STFU and enjoy the silly Japanese cartoon.

What. The. Fuck. I would think that with the shiny new invention of dual-language DVDs, people would STFU about subs vs. dubs and, oh I dunno, watch whatever they prefered instead of wanking about it. Especially since the YGO ones are uncut and all that.

I find the animation quality (or lack thereof) to be far more painful than any dubbing of that anime. YGO is hideously low-budget.

As wanky as both sides are, here, I'll have to go with the OP on this one. The YGO dub is bad. Hideously bad. Then again, it's 4Kids, and everything they do is hideously bad.

I still don't understand why people defend it, even on mock factor. Being able to mock a dub mercilessly doesn't mean it's decent. I'd say it means quite the opposite, but that's just me. I'm too busy cringing and grabbing my ears and yelling for someone to make it stop to see the funny.

THe YGO dub sort of amuses me at times, but yeah. Baaaad dubbing. And I'm still bitter over the way they royally fucked up Malik's entire freakin' motivation and backstory in order to make him a generic "wanna take over the world" villain. On the other hand, at least the YGO dub doesn't have near as many random WTF accents as some of 4Kids other stuff (from what I've seen of the One Piece dub, almost everyone has a silly accent for no real reason. Not to mention the British Chinese people in the Shaman King dub).

On the bright side, my icon is at last fully appropriate!
