"What's this? Is it a map of what the hell's going on here?" - Drew Carey
"You're traveling through another dimension, a dimension not only of stupidity and trolls, but of wankery; a journey into a boggling land whose boundaries stretch beyond that of intelligence. That's the signpost up ahead - your next stop, the Twilight Zone!"

That's what happens when you find yourself on the other side of a flame war sparking by people who Malkavians would advise to seek professional help.

Our tale begins innocently enough (on a dark and stormy night!). I love a good ghost story and tales of haunted houses as much as the next person. Spooky Legends has been slow, so when I found out about Ghostly Tales, I was not only happy, but amused by the concept of the place. I join. Now, let's say it all together now, boys and girls: I don't know a single other member in the community. It was advertised in Community Promo, looked interesting, I joined.

I read a few comments. I see one that jogs a few things in my memory. I comment (and there's no longer a comment from me there), go along, and later make a post about a house I was living in 10 years ago.

All's well and good. I get a few comments from members who enjoyed reading it, and then out of the blue, Firebird replies to a post in my journal clueing me in to something being amiss in LJLand.

I was able to recover the original post from e-mails, and when I realized I was also removed from the community, I had the feeling this might turn wanky, so I started keeping tabs on stuff and posting them in my JournalFen.

I do some looking around, and apparently a spat went down while I wasn't looking and someone went on a delete spree. I wasn't associated with any of it, so I'm wondering what the hell, right?

I rejoin (with no intention of remaining once I got my answer) to make another post asking about it. It's since been deleted, but I kept saving the HTML source file with each new comment and exchange, so it's at least preserved. That link goes to my personal server.

I and another woman get pulled into it, as you can see. We're both still laughing over it.

Someone named T Zone chimes in with her charming assessment that this other woman is a troll. T Zone and I go way on back when I basically attempted to calm her down when she posted that another community member should die, and I got called a psycho for it.

Now, the dust is settling, I've been banned for apparently "not liking how the moderator was running things" all because I was peeved and wondering why a perfectly on-topic post with no flaming whatsoever was deleted, and why I was banned when the closest thing I ever did that was even remotely possibly in conflict with another member was to essentially tell her to chill out. I didn't even call her on her off-topicness.

I'm going to go back to laughing and boggling at the same time. Enjoy this accidental wankery.

ETA!: DenyEverything (the other "evil intelligent person" in this mess) just informed that the userinfo page on Ghostly Tales has been modified. It now reads: "this community is now exclusive and private and it's under new management: namely me. i am the new manager. if i like u, u stay. if i don't, ur gone.

many here are friends in private life. don't step on our turf then dis us up in here. if u do, it's adios."

I saw that in your JF, and I'm *still* going "What the Shit is this?!" at it. O_x Apparently, they just banned everyone who had ever replied to this one persons' posts? Who knows?

Lots of good wankery to be had by all. ^^ *snirkle* I especially liked the girl who couldn't spell or use proper syntax, yet kept telling you and the other girl that you weren't any better than her.

That's our "We know that you, Moofy"/"Now he dead from coke" moment for this evening, isn't it?

This needs to be made into an image to hand out as an award to particularly "special" wanks, I think.

(Oh, and OT, but: I just realized why the hell did your name and icons look so dang familiar - you're an LJ-friend of one of my close OL buddies, and I think we might've even had an exchange or two before in the replies to her LJ posts! Geez, I'm so slow to notice these things. ^^;)

Hee...I just forwarded him the reply e-mail. He's in the community (I gave him one of my codes) but he's more a lurker type than a participant, most days.

::nodnod:: I met her through the Slayers communities and ChildFree. She's cool. I went by your userinfo and followed that to your LJ out of curiosity when we started talking about Slayers stuff, and recognized your default icon. I've known her from way back almost from the start of my online "life," when we used to hang out at this guestbook called The Asylum. I can attest to the fact that she was way cool even then. ^_^

Ah, the ChildFree comm... I might've considered lurking around there if it weren't for the fact that the really rabid folks (like some of the peeps that showed up after a particular post was featured on LJ Drama) didn't turn me off so badly that I'd rather not be associated with them (I guess it's kind of like how sensible Christians avoid fundies like the plague.). Might have to post a rant with my reaction to that incident one of these days. --;;

Heheh, icon!Tosh gets around like a h0 over on LJ, probably due to the fact that I only have 3 icons to use over there. XD And yeah, now that you mention it, I HAVE seen you in those comms, too! Yay, more things in common! ^_^

::nodnod:: I can get a bit rabid about it, depending on how far I've been pushed or lectured or otherwise cornered into a situation regarding kids or idiotic-type parents that I didn't want to deal with. Once I calm down, I'm fine. I don't mind kids or sensible non-breeder parents, but gah! >_<

Yes, it DOES get wanky now and again. Most communities do. ^_^ We wouldn't have stuff to post about if all of us avoided places that got wanky sometimes. It just goes for whatever we feel we can deal with, or want to put up with.

I especially liked the girl who couldn't spell or use proper syntax, yet kept telling you and the other girl that you weren't any better than her.

She even pulled out the dyslexic excuse somewhere down the line, didn't she? Or did I read that wrong?

Anyway, like I said that time when that one idiot replier to the "terminally ill" MS author thread a while back and used the same excuse, the whole "dyslexic" thing is NO FUCKING EXCUSE in my book. My Spanish Lit. teacher from sophomore and junior years in high school had a mild case of dyslexia too, and what she did was to put in EXTRA EFFORT to get things right and be understood by others. In fact, she was so good at it, that I had NO idea she had the condition at all until she mentioned it to me once in a private conversation about my personal problems.

So no, whining about being dyslexic doesn't get sympathy from me in my book. If you're not trying to put at least some effort into communicating properly, then you're just being lazy and it also makes you look like you really don't care enough about your statements - and if you don't, why should I?

In the meantime, have Yami no Makumoto, aka Darkstar (who looks suspiciously like Gourry) giving a Troll the whatfor.

It's because intelligence is something they don't have and it threatens them. They don't want someone hanging around that makes them look as stupid as they are.

He DOES look like Gourry. o_O

He's also voiced by Yasunori Matsumoto, Gourry's seiyuu. It's really weird and yet very cool to hear him sound EVIL. ^^

And Rail looks like Xellos.

He looks like Xel, but he's voiced by Hikaru Midorikawa. He is like Zelgadis in the terms that he tends to prefer to act on his own (you don't really notice that until late in the series), but then he is like Xelloss in the sense that he is not above using deceit or manipulating others to get what he wants (he's not as underhanded as Xelloss is about it, though), and then he is like both of them in the sense that he is also a highly intelligent guy*.

Thus... I can only conclude that he is Zel and Xelloss' bastard lovechild.

Anyway, Lost Universe isn't anywhere as great as Slayers is (Plot could've been executed SO much better, and the series should've either been longer or had less filler to explain a few things better.), but it's got its own charm. And a GREAT opening song (It can even compete with the best of the Slayers OPs, IMHO.). ^_^

*[He does have some of his own personality mixed in, though - he shows a bit of a funny pervert streak, as he likes filming girls in bathing suits and then selling the tapes. ^^]

Anyway, yeah - I have vols 2 & 3 of the LU manga sitting on the shelf in front of me right now. XD Darkstar's a hottie, y0.

And the info you guys have further down the post about the Lost Universe continuity is all correct. ^^ Yes, Kane and Millie are second cousins, and I've heard that Stargazer killed Millie's folks, too. It's a pity, though, that there aren't more sites with LU info on them. O_o

[SPOILERTASTIC MATERIAL FOR LOST UNIVERSE ABOUT TO BE DISCUSSED, STOP READING MESSAGE NOW IF YOU DON'T WANT IT!]

Erm, wait, now I'm confused. Back when I watched Lost Universe on fansubs (still need to buy the series ;_;) and then perused the few English sites, I had gathered from them that Yami was supposed to be a clone of Stargazer when he was young? I suspect that perhaps he would later be used as a vessel for Darkstar or something after he was freed from where he was, but at least, the clone thing was the impression I was under. ^^;;

He is a clone, which, ironcially enough makes him I believe Millie's grandfather? Is that right? He's realted somehow. This also makes Kain's grandmother his sister and therefore Kain is his great-nephew or something like that.

Which makes Kain and Millie related.

Damn, I wish I would stop picking up on ships that involve people that are otherwise related.

But yes, he was a clone. He was, however, also created as a vessel for Darkstar. Sorta like how the Sword Breaker was the physical vessel of Volfeed. His soul was still that of our beloved Darkstar that we see in his merged-with-Volfeed form at the end of Slayers TRY.

Stargazer is indeed Millie's grandfather (Her real last name is Stargazer, actually, she just changed it to Nocturne. It's not explained in the anime why she did it, but according to the scarce bit of information I picked up on one of the LU sites about the novels, Millie had actually been intending to find him and kill the old man, as apparently Millie's parents were killed by him.), so yeah, he'd be a clone of ol' grandpa there.

He is also indeed the elder brother of Alice, Kain's grandmother, making him Kain's great-uncle. I think I remember seeing an additional note about the big scar on Yami's chest apparently being a scar Stargazer (the original, I'd assume) got from his last confrontation (in the Gorun Nova) with Alice and Vorfeed (who had yet to assume the Canal persona), but I my memory's a bit fuzzy on that.

(Man, there was simply a shitload of information that didn't make it into the anime, now that I think about it. And it would've made things so much more clearer and interesting, too.)

So yes, that would make Kain and Millie kissin' cousins. They're twice-removed and they do have a rather cute way of getting along, though, so it doesn't really bother me all that much as some of the more "incesty" pairs out there. ^_^

(Then again, the incestous pairings in Utena don't really perturb me much either, and I kinda like the idea of Folken x Van in Escaflowne, so maybe I've just turned rather corrupt in my ripe old age... of 23... and am not a good example to go by. ^^;;)

Okay! I was wondering about that, because I thought I remembered something along those lines, but it's been such a long time since the time I saw the fansubs (which were rather crappy, except for the ones that were done by SAHA) and saw the info sites that I wasn't certain and didn't want to risk getting that part wrong. ^^;;

Now that you've jogged my mind, though, I do seem to recall this part too. ^^ And it's making me think of that one vignette idea for what happened to him and Vorfeed after Try... ^^;;

*LOL* You find Folken creepy, but not Dilandau and his dementia? Interesting. XD

Anyway, I totally drooled over Folken. I think a lot of it had to do with the fact that he has Gaav's seiyuu. Such a deep, sexy voice. ^o^

And I love Van x Hitomi too much. *huggles them as well* XD

Oh, I like them too as well. Hitomi's a nice girl, if a bit too indecisive at times (but hey, she's a teenager, that's normal). ^^ Folken x Van is something I'm interested in, but don't really feel too incredibly passionate about. Plus I'm sometimes inclined to think that it might be slightly one-sided, with Folken's feelings being the strong ones, while Van's are the more innocent brotherly type.

I don't deny sometimes getting a hankerin' for smut, though, despite the fact that it would be pretty damn hard to come up with a believable setting within the canon (first because Van's too young during the time he and Folken were still together, and during the series because he's obviously developed strong feelings for Hitomi). Still, if someone can pull it off, I'd definitely be interested in seeing it. XD

*L* I was going to use something about those two in my post-TRY Slayers fic that for right now is rather abandoned. ^^;;

My vignette idea was basically post-Try/pre-Lost Universe, as a sort of attempt to explain why the world of LU is seemingly devoid of any races other than humans. It was actually rather inspired by listening to the song "Further" by VNV Nation, because when I heard the lyrics it kept making me think of the relationship between the Demons and the Gods in L-sama's universe that was hinted at in Try (the whole general notion that they existed basically to be a driving force for humanity to better or worsen themselves). And it's electronica with an almost "ethereal" feel at points, which of course would immediately make anyone think of both the sci-fi setting of LU and the mystical element of the demons and gods. ^^

Not sure if I'll ever write it, though now that I've been reminded of it, I'm almost tempted. I should probably go over Try and LU first if I did choose to take a stab at it, though. ^^;;

True. I need more Utena, damnit.

You find Folken creepy, but not Dilandau and his dementia? Interesting. XD

I had already been spoiled about the plot twist behind Dilandau's existance when I went into it, so Dilandau's dementia was just that much more fascinating because I knew the truth behind it all. I thrive on the sort of foreshadowing/symbolism/irony that just PERMEATED the early episodes, particularly with any exchange between Allen and Dilandau.

Anyway, I totally drooled over Folken. I think a lot of it had to do with the fact that he has Gaav's seiyuu. Such a deep, sexy voice. ^o^
