Mmm, fresh wank.
This would be my first post here, but I'm a longtime lurker. Just never found any worthy wank to post... but now I have. Oh yes. This is anime wank of the finest kind. It's the old 'legality of fansubs' debate kicked up a notch.

For those not in the know, fansubbing is when fans translate, subtitle and distribute anime, for free, no cost. It's purely a labor of fannish love. Ethical fansubbers - which make up most of the community - only sub and release series that haven't been licensed for release in North America. Once a series is licensed, the fansubbers usually stop subbing it, and stop distributing the episodes. Now, there are a few groups that keep subbing licensed stuff, in the gap between licensing and actual stateside release. Most of these groups keep very quiet about what they're doing, and will immediately stop subbing once their anime has been formally released.

However, there is a group called Anime-Junkies that's become rather infamous in anime fandom. They're 'renowned' for releasing fansubs extremely quickly, subbing an ENORMOUS number of series at the same time, and having horrific subtitle quality. They also sub a lot of licensed stuff.

Here's where the wank comes in.

Anime-Junkies is currently subbing a series called Ninja Scroll, which has been licensed since before its Japanese release. So they sub it. That happens often, true - several groups are subbing the enormously popular (and very good) Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, even though it's been licensed for a while.

However, the licensor of the title in North America, Urban Vision, discovered this. They e-mailed Anime-Junkies and asked them if they would please stop subbing and distribution of Ninja Scroll.

The response? Well, it speaks for itself. Responses from the subbers range from the ever-polite "Rot in hell" to "Who the fuck are you anyways to buy a series we were doing?" Wank of the highest caliber, here.

And the wank spreads as one of the most well-known anime news sites, Anime News Network, releases an editorial on the whole thing, slamming Anime-Junkies for their behavior.

Watch as it spreads across the community! Fun for all!

Feh. I mistakenly downloaded something subbed by Anime-Junkies once. I wasn't quite sure which language they were writing their subtitles in, but it didn't quite match English.

I wasn't impressed with the Ninja Scroll movie, but now I'm tempted to buy Urban Vision's DVD releases anyway, out of the principle of the thing. I'm contrary (and materialistic) like that.

Apparently what AJ does to translate is translate from Japanese to Korean, then from Korean to English. The only problem is the Korean-English step is done via Babelfish. O_o;

I think this image really says it all. (Also, Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex is awesome.)

Y'know, the bottom one makes a little more sense, but it's still awkward and grammatically incorrect.

I give the top one an F and the bottom one a D+ for at least being coherent.

The bottom one is AonE. They have some grammar structure problems sometimes, but it's not bad. Certainly better than AJ.

Still, I personally prefer Ani-Kraze for my GitS:SAC subs.

It's fansubbers like that that fuck up the party for the rest of the anime community. X_x

I *would* laugh at their rampant tinhattery, what with them claiming that the industry is responsible for stealing from anime fans, and not obnoxious fansubbers like them... but the whole disgusting thing made me sick to my stomach. X_x

Or maybe it's because I just ate sushi, and sushi doesn't go well with gaijin wank.

"It's fansubbers like that that fuck up the party for the rest of the anime community. X_x"

No kidding.

What's sad is that there are a hell of a lot of anime fans who feel that Anime-Junkies are in the right. You'd be surprised at how being able to get something for free seems to gloss over all of its failings, fansubs included. In fact, most anime fans on the internet in general strike me as the type who were born wearing tin hats.

Mmm... sushi.

It's not just anime fans. I've known...oh hell, is there a word for folks who download crappy copies of pirated movies the day before they're released to theaters? I dunno. Anyway, those guys, and they get irate at the notion of paying for anything to do with their personal entertainment, and go apeshit when copyright holders make even a token attempt to protect their property. "Those bastards at Marvel! How dare they try to keep me from owning Spider-Man the day it comes out!" Or better yet, "I was hours downloading that, and the copy quality was lousy! What a rip-off!"

And it's people like that who make me want to start carrying around a long cotton tube sock packed hard-full of sand and BB pellets, so when people start saying these things, I can give them a deadpan, incredulous stare, and then whap them over the head with the sock. It's almost sad that they don't even realize how stupid they sound.

We call them toonies. (Because up here, our $1 coin has a loon on it, and we call it a loonie, so we call the $2 coin a toonie. However, the $2 coin has a polar bear on it, not two loons. Go figure, eh?)

And, on the plus side, if you hit someone hard enough with them, the gold insides fall out leaving shiney silver loops that look like washers!

Yeah, the only way I really meet these idiots is by going to conventions. I bet Mikhail's gonna pop up any second and defend them because he likes getting shit for free, too. *either that, or he's going to be ragingly pissed at them. One or the other ^^*

For example, for Anime Boston, I rode in a car with a guy for *twelve* hours, who insisted that me and my girlfriend were supporting a corrupt industry by buying Korean bootlegs *whom I am told, by the way, give stats of whatever they sell to the Japanese industry - doesn't make it right, but whatever*. What was his moral high-ground? "I burn my own cds after downloading everything off the internet!" Wait, wait, wait - wasn't the whole *purpose* of bootlegs being wrong the fact that they *steal* from the Japanese industry? And isn't that what you're doing *right**now*?

Asshat. I should report him to F_W Offline.

A new kink in this thread - apparently, we're all tools of the MAN just for looking at this wank!

The link goes to an e-mail that UV sent to Anime-Kraze, another channel that distributed Ninja Scroll: TV. Anime-Kraze, unlike Anime Junkies, had their heads dislodged from their asses *and tinhats!* enough to respond politely, and pulled their subs.

It basically states that UV didn't want to pursue unnessecary legal action against AJ and that the best way to get the asshats to take those subs down was to tattle on them to ANN!

Sneaky and underhanded as that was, I have to say - it sure was effective! ^^ *laughing at the wankery of it all!*

Oooh. And the page is down, dammit... but that is some good information. I can see why they'd do that; legal action IS expensive, and tracking down real identities to sue would be a hassle. Not impossible by any means, but some trouble.

Sneaky, underhanded, effective - cheap! Works for me.

And as an aside, Xelloss rules. Ah, Slayers, I need to watch thee again.

I have to say, I was tempted to write this off as old school internet flame baiting and personal vendettas against Anime Junkies, but the Anime-Kraze bit nearly finishes the case for me.

Anime Junkies have a statement on their website now, btw.

I had seen something on one of the message boards about them having a statement up. They seem to gloss over some of the stuff that came out elsewhere, though. O_o

I just talked to a friend of mine that works for ANN, and he agrees with the majority of the people I've seen comment on the subject - AJ got what was coming to them. I don't know if I'd call it a vendetta, though - that usually implies that someone's after you for no reason. AJ gave UV a reason to come after them, and I'm just glad they went about it *this* way, instead of getting lawyers and other nasty shit.

I'm actually thoroughly relieved that UV went about things this way, instead of cracking down on fansubbers. It makes the whole thing even more wanky, and more hilarious, if you ask me. ^_^ Just one never-ending, big wank-o-rama!

Well, I'm not quite sure if that was entirely all that wanky - like [info]rowan said, legal pursuit in a case like this would be really hard, and instead of cracking down on the fansubbers and establishing one hell of an uncomfortable precedent, they just decided to basically do what F_W does (reporting wank), except on a much grander scale (aka ANN).

...

......

.........wait, what the hell am I saying?! It IS wanky as hell! *LOL* But at least taking the wanky route in this case meant that everyone came out winning in the end*! ^_^;;

Anyway, a beautiful, BEAUTIFUL first choice, [info]rowan! This should go down as one of the Great Epics of anime!wank, and is deserving of that "Beyond wank, it's outright BUKKAKE" award from the Ghostly Tales thread. Bravo!

I think the best part of this wank was where AJ questioned the right of companies to hold the license to any anime now that it was so popular.

Urban Vision is interesting--one of their first releases was the Gatchaman '94 OAVs. The videos had some errors--a minor mistranslation on the first one and bad sub timing on the third one--but I was happy to discover they were all corrected on the DVD.

I haven't had the (mis)fortune to see an AJ fansub, so I can't comment on them other than the fact that if they truly believed what they wrote in that rather incendiary letter to UV, I hope someone whacks some sense into them. Preferably with a mace.

Awesome first wank.

Just brillant.

I haven't heard of AJ before, but then again, my friend only gives me the stuff from the good fan subbers. Aside from the fact that they don't make any sense, I'm just glad that they got what's coming to them.

Fansubs are nice, and you'd have a hell of a lot of pissed off people if they were the asshats to ruin it for the rest.

Something a friend of mine pointed out (we were actually discussing Anime Junkies and Wolf Pack Productions*1 a few days ago, before this wank came up), is that AJ in their argument says that "On the extreme left of the issue are people that feel that fansubs are illegal no matter what." Considering that in politics the "extreme left" = extremely liberal, AJ is really spewing bullshit they don't know to make themselves look better. And, in light of their flame to UV, I just LOVE this line: "I would also like to illuminate the fact that AnimeJunkies always complies with requests from license holders to drop a series." Classic wank, yo.

*1 WPP is another idiot fansub group that subtitled already released anime like DIGIMON. They're slow about it, frequently mistranslate, and add their own lines for "evidence" of their supported couples.

Heh heh... I was also thinking of Wolf Pack Productions last night too, but I figured that they were small-time compared to Anime-Junkies. That, and I was too lazy to hunt down the URL. ;)

Though they are just as bad, if not worse. You don't get any MORE licensed than Digimon, after all.
