Webcomic Wankery
So in the wild, wild world of webcomics, there is the Daily Grind Ironman challenge.

It's a simple little game-- comics artists put in $20, and agree to produce a strip per day M-F. Miss a strip, you're out. Last man standing gets $1000.

Lots of big names-- lots of smaller ones.

And one of the contestants is..

wait for it..

Scott Kurtz.

Kurtz, king of the intensely wanky PVP fandom and not afraid to whip it out himself. He produces Player Versus Player, a cute little webcomic that's usually pretty amusing.

And hasn't missed a day in YEARS.

The splooge hits the rotary blades when another contestant breaks one of the Daily Grind's rules-- " Strips must be a minimum of two panels, however, artists may produce one single panel strip per every 10 strips. "

The fellow in question was just one of many who took this to mean that there had to be a 1:10 ratio of one to multipanel strips. Kurtz and the judges were of the opinion that it meant "nine multipanel strips between one panels." But the judges are convinced to give the erring contestants another chance.

Kurtz is not happy.

It starts off breakneck in the first post and runs on. "I'm almost suspect that this is some pussy way to piss off and weed out all the professionals in this contest so that the rest of you guys can go back to sucking each other's dicks about how awesome you are without fear of losing this contest."

I would post highlights of the wank, but as about one in three of the posts on the thread IS a wank highlight...

Because nothing's wankier than a webcomic's fandom than LOTS of webcomics' fandoms.

Scott Kurtz, the little black dress of webcomic wank. He fits in with any type of bitching.

Sometimes I wish that Kurz WOULD miss a day or two and think of something better.

The most recent storylines are snoozefests.

I would say there should be a rule about wank following Kurtz around... except he usually starts the wank.

But the judges are convinced to give the erring contestants another chance.

If the others were posting a 1:10 ratio, that's actually *better* the 1:9 ratio that you cite as the cause for wank, so I'm not seeing how they could be in error, or that that's in any way what Kurtz is actually wanking about.

Let me rephrase.

Kurtz says: 9 multipanels between single panel strips.
Confused contestants: I can have two single panels back to back as long as I maintain a 9:1 (sorry) ratio.
Kurtz says: No you can't, OMG you lose.

You know, PvP has done a lot of good things for me. Without it, I wouldn't have my -1 STR/ +1 CHA shirt (which is probably just another example of the sexism I sense when I read the strip, but oh well; it's an awesome shirt), and my boyfriend wouldn't have his "I spent my reward on ale and whores" shirt and cosy warm Skull blanket. And the strip is amusing on a fairly consistent basis.

But Kurtz just comes off as an ass. Even before I read wank involving him, I was getting this impression from his comments on the main page.

I think this is my favourite part of the wank, though (although I've only read to page 2):

And honestly, I stay out of these forums on a daily basis. I know I'm not welcome in this contest. I know you all hate and resent me. It's obvious. Hey, the fat jokes will be coming any second now. That's cool.

Oh, boo hoo hoo. He is such a martyr. So persecuted. Certainly he brings none of it upon himself for being an ass. If he were less established I'm sure we'd see an "UR ALL SO MEEN IM LEEVING THE INTERNET FOREVER!!!!1" post any minute.

But seriously? Come on. That rule could have been interpreted either way, so shut it.

You know, the irony is I heard about the Ironman contest from a webcomic artist's update blog. He pretty much said that he wasn't entering because he hadn't missed a day in years and even had a buffer of around 2 weeks of comics, and that the contest was better suited to motivate comic artists who hads trouble keeping deadlines, rather than become a contest between a half dozen of the big names who could go for years on a one-update-a-day schedule (Scott Kurtz may have been on his list of the Eternal Updaters).

You know, I can't help but wonder why the contest allows pros at all. Especially people like Kurtz, who already make a living out of it and draw a comic a day consistently. I mean, why even sign up if you clearly don't need the money, and it's obviously not going to be a challenge?

From what I know of Kurtz, his ego wouldn't let him pass up a chance to strut his stuff. If he can be the last webcomicer standing, then he has one more thing to shout from the rooftops.

Speaking of webcomics, I should start updating mine again . . .

How old is Kurtz? Because from his posts, I get the impression he's a 15-year-old girl.

Seriously, this guy could wank about literally anything. No wonder his fandom's so wanky.

Wow, that Kurtz is a Kunt. WELL EVERYBODY ELSE UNDERSTOOD THE RULE!! Then when a bunch of people pop up to say, "no, actually, I misunderstood it too", Kurtz does a OMG YOU'RE MEEN I'M LEAVING THE INTERNET CONTEST FOREVER BLOO BLOO HOO ALL MY PROBLEMS ARE BECAUSE I'M FAT. I still remember how he tried to use that to start a pity-party when Fred Gallagher's fanpoodles got mad at him for taking a cheap shot about "MegaTokyo". I truly find Scott Kurtz a reprehensible person, but of course IT'S NOT HIS FAULT IT'S BECAUSE HE'S FAT!!!!

I wonder if it would be wanky to institute a "if you haven't missed a day for the past three years before you entered this contest, then you aren't eligible to enter". Because, dude, it sounds like you'd have to grind this guy's fingers into dust to keep him from winning.

I have so much more respect for the webcomic artists who haven't missed a day in forever that chose NOT to participate in this contest because it would ruin the point. And end up with four or five guys feuding at each other for years and years if they did.
