Just because you like it doesn't mean everyone else will.
As requested by an anonymouse:

AnimeFringe puts up this review of Fullmetal Alchemist. Needless to say, the review is not exactly flattering, and is often brutally honest in pointing out the flaws in the series.

And, as if on cue,
the FMA community on LJ explodes with wank.

It's happened before, and it'll happen again. Because this is FMA! >3

I honestly cannot tell whether it's meant to be serious or an April Fool's joke.

Because nobody could seriously dislike FMA.

As my friend who linked me to it put it, did the author sleep through the show or something?

I know I sure do.

Everyone should know it's physically impossible to dislike FMA! Sometimes, as I lay in bed at night, surrounded by my 300 Ed keychains, I get doubts, but these filthy thoughts are most quickly QUASHED by the comforting words from the keychains that explain to me that NO, MOLLY, NO, IT IS THE SPACE-LASERS COMING DOWN AND INFECTING THEIR BRAINS, THEY DO NOT KNOW THEY REALLY LOVE FMA, THEY KNOW NOT WHAT THEY ARE SAYING and I go back to sleep because then I feel better. Then, as I drift off, they say more and more things and I start to get a little scared, but then I remember, it is Ed or rather 300 of him, he will not hurt me.

Criticism displeases Ed! Terminate the nonbeliever!

heh I think the person writing that article just couldn't handle all of the OMG ANGST that FMA shoves in your face.

Okay, not that I have seen FMA, but that statement isn't really making FMA look that good in my eyes. Because I don't really go for things being shoved in my face. It sort of makes me very cranky.

Like the only way a series can be good is to have lots and lots of angst, oh I am sorry, OMG ANGST.

Isn't that an old thing? I wouldn't be surprised if someone started an art pad wank. (good lord those things are annoying! At least some people started labeling them as artpad so I can skip over them)

I all but stopped going there for a couple of months. Too much crap and spam. There *is* a difference between CRACK and CRAP people!
However having a string of tests sent me running back so I could avoid study.

That's a pretty good review, in my opinion. This reviewer brings up good points, seems honest, and done her homework. If someone didn't like a show I did, I rather see a review like this. (Or at least a funny one like most of the one star reviews at Anime Jump.)

Bwahaha! The article is unprofessional because, what, it presents a dissenting opinion?

I thought the author had some pretty good points about the series, particularly when it came to characterization (or lack thereof) and the gigantic WTF? that was the last 10 or so episodes. I like FMA and all, but yeah, there is a lot to it that's just questionable. 'Bout time someone said something.

Seems like she watched it once, and watching/reading/blah anything once isn't enough to analyze it properly.

Because, you know, you have to watch it again and again and again until you understand how amazing this series if. If you point out its flaws, then you didn't understand the show!

Ah, the wankiness of the FMA fandom. That's why I stay in my little Greed and Devil's Nest obsessed corner and never, ever venture near the comms unless someone recs fic from there.

...but dudes, defending the end of the anime doesn't work very well. I mean, I like the series and I spent most of the last half of it being alternately bored, boggled, and bitchy. Except when Kimbley was around. Kimbley = ♥

Dear FMA Fandom,

Stop making the rest of us sane fans look like incredibly wanky asshats. The show is good. But good =/= perfect. There are flaws in everything. And having them pointed out in an intelligent and well-thought manner is not the End of the World As We Know It. Because y'know, we feel fine. And I apologize profusely for that halacious pun. The R.E.M. fangirl in me couldn't control herself.

No lube love,

Yeah FMA has lots of flaws ... but I really dislike it when people need the words PLOT POINT put in giant flashing lights above certain scenes in order to read in between the lines. The reviewer makes a few really good points, and I sympathize because over-hyping can really really ruin a good story.

Yet at the same time I can't help but feel that the disturbing nature of the ending of FMA completely went over the reviewer's head. It was good because it was subtle. Because you either had to think about what the Thule society was or what was going on in Munich in the 1920s and then make the connection to the promises Ed and Al make individually at the end of that episode.

Hey if you just want straight forward, no-analysis required plot ... that's totally cool. But I had to snort at the my English teacher would be so proud if he saw me now comment ... somehow I'm thinking no, he wouldn't.

All bitching about whether the series is good or bad aside, is it really prudent to have giant, series-wide spoilers in a review? The last time I checked, the basic purpose of a review was to let people interested in something know whether or not it was worth their time, not to tell people that such-and-such happens and they'll really like or hate it.

As it is, that review is pretty much only useful to people who obsessively followed the fansubs, and those people are obviously set in their opinions of the show.
