Harry Potter Anti-Porn Mini Wank
This one definately has potential.

Karthur at livejournal posts about a letter written by an angry parent to Warner Brothers that was posted on Planetfeedback

Here's the "letter" where the author asks Warner Brothers to shut down a HP fanfic site called Fiction Alley

Only four responses so far on Planetfeedback, but I guess that's because each account has to be validated.

Lesson in life: Don't use the internet as a babysitter.

You have the authority and ability to keep this smut from reaching our children!

And as a parent, she has the right and (if she sees this as such a terrible thing) obligation to to the same. Gotta love how she ignores the fact that she's the parent here, not Warner Brothers.

I hate life. Or, more precisely, parents that refuse to take responsibility for their children. By the time I was allowed to play online, my parents didn't hover over me, but we did have a little chat and they did check on me. If I had found porn and had stupidly gotten caught, I would have been the one scolded not the OMG INTERNET.

The "protect the kiddywiddies from everything so I don't have to parent" stance bothers me more than I can express coherently.

Lady, if you don't want your kids to see it, ZOMGWTFBBQ try, yanno, actually monitoring what the shit your kids do when they're online. :\ For cripe's sake, the people I babysit for have DSL and every time their kids are online, I've got an eye on them and make sure they're sticking to the kiddy-friendly sites.

I wish more parents realised the Internet is not for their yard apes. They might explode though, since, God forbid, they do their job and parent. /froth

Wasn't aware that the first book was intended for nine year olds. Didn't JK say that she was aiming her books at the kids the age of Harry? So wouldn't that mean that nine is two years to young for canon, much less fanon? Wonder how much wank would ensue if someone told her that? *wanders off to think about doing it, just to see the resulting explosion*

Parents! Don't they have any responsibility to their kids themselves anymore?

Isn't Fiction Alley one of the sites that got rid of all the NC-17 content? (Yes, I know she's objecting to R-rated content too, but still, Fiction Alley is a poor choice of who to pick on.)

My daughter's eleven and she isn't even interested in R or NC-17 rated fanfic. She thinks the idea of Harry Potter characters intensely in love is kind of gross. I'm sure that will change (possibly quite soon, as I know other eleven-year-olds don't feel that way) but for now the last thing I'm worried about is that she's going to sneak around looking for porny HP fic.

This besides the fact that I don't expect large corporations or the internet to keep my kid safe.

that's so ridiculous.
When my mom found a smutty fanfic I had read when I was younger (maybe 12ish)she sat me down and had the most embarrassing talk ever with me. To this day I'm still haunted by memories of it and am terrified of going anywhere near fanfic on the family computer whenever I'm home from university.

The mom could nip this one in the bud easily but I guess that would mean taking some responsibility for her choices and her child. Both of which are clearly much more difficult than firing off an angry letter.

The tragedy is that in the current climate someone will probably listen to her. Because we all know parents can't be expected to pay attention when their children do anything. That's the job of corporations/the government/anyone you can get to listen to you.

Close it saying "EEWWWWW, GROSS!" and I'm fairly certain that it's going to keep like that for a while. Why? Because my mother cares and she doesn't expect a company to OMGprotect-her-children.

My computer teacher once told me there were two types of poeple in the world -- people who accidentally clicked on porn links on the internet and people who haven't yet accidentally clicked on porn links on the internet. (This was part of the School District Computer Use Policiy Lecture -- she went on to say we wouldn't lose computer privledges for spending 5 seconds on a porn site, but she would be irate if logs showed we spent 30 minutes there.)

That being said, why the hell is this woman letting a nine-year-old use the net without supervision? Even if she's doing a school project, something could slip through the netnanny. Then you get the embarassing questions like, "Mommy, what are those ladies doing to that sheep?" (which is probably worse for Mom than it is for Junior, actually)

(Anonymous)
2005-04-07 09:57 am UTC (link)
Dear Christine W. from Boiling Springs, SC;

Hi! I'm Common Sense. Have we met?

I'm gonna let you in on a little secret, Sweet Cheeks, but that Internet.. it isn't a babysitter for you. You have a nine year old girl who is essentially stupid to the ways of the world. Aww, don't cry, Chris, all nine year olds are dumb to the world, that's why they need, leik, OMG, PARENTS!!!one11!

That's where you come in, Sweet Cheeks. Don't want Precious on "adult oriented EVOL HARRY POTTER FANFICTION SITES?" You can block them from her innocent little eyes. Most parental controls allow you to block rating content that you don't want your little Angel to see. If you're not bright enough to manage that, then at least be in the same room with her and monitor her internet use. That's your fucking job. When I was a runt, my mum didn't even let me know my own AOL password; she would type it in for me so I could only sign on when 1) she was there and 2) she had the time to monitor me. I don't care if that's too much work for you; then don't have the Internet.

Just to further rub your face in this, Chrissy, your little darling has discovered fanfiction, and I promise you that we'll be seeing her again in the future. She'll want to know about Harry's hot sexual exploits when she gets older; canon ain't gonna satisfy us girls forever, you know, and there will come a time when you won't be able to monitor Princess. So do it now while you can and at least explain this to her and deal with this issue as a parent before running off to a website and running your mouth about "OMG, SHUT DOWN THESE BAD SITES!"

It didn't work against Larry Flint, it sure as shit won't work against the Internet.

Regards,
Common Sense
