Sin City wank
Hi! New here! First post, please use the easy-release knots and the numbing cream.

OK, so Sin City is out and there's all kinds of opinions being flung back and forth about it. Especially over at [info]feministfilm on LJ, where someone doesn't like it at all. Then several other someones disagree with the first someone. Then someone gets banned. Then the term "feminazi" gets tossed around. Then more banning occurs.

Bring armor and courage, is all I'm sayin'. Good times.

Whoa! I read the rules (that were constantly being linked to) and you know, not every film one person sees as misogynistic is gonna be the same for another.

And just because the mods or a poster sees it that way doesn't mean anyone else who sees it otherwise should get banned. Seems a few folks on this comm take themselves and their pseudo-intellectual wordy critiques a little too seriously.

Wow. Just wow. Don't their hands get tired from all this self love?

I'm a feminist, but oy, it starts giving me a headache that discussion so focussed on examining the sexism of a film that it seems taboo to even mention how men are treated (at least just to acknowledge it -- I did notice it's against the rules to bring it up as a discussion-derailer).

I'm calling them on flagrant abuse of a thesaurus - that post looks like one of my more obnoxiously verbose two-AM literature term papers. And the community rules hurt my head. That was a very long-winded and pretentious way of saying: "EVERYTHING WE SAY IS ANTI-FEMINIST! IF YOU DISAGREE YOU ARE WRONG! ADMIT TO YOUR OWN MISOGYNIST WAYS!"

I have to admit I'm confused at why in the hell someone so easily offended by midrifts and sexualization of women *went* in a movie like that. One would think the blatantly eroticized promos, film-noir style commercials, and, oh, the massive half-naked posters of Jessica Alba would be enough to hint that perhaps this was not the movie for her. But - wait - that would mean avoiding things that will raise your blood pressure, and *that,* my friends, is a tool of the patriarchy.

I am currently pointing at laughing at appreciating the irony of [info]slutbag being the dictator moderator of such a comm. Power-tripping-Ban-happy, much?

I haven't actually seen the film, mind you, but I am greatly looking forward to "spending two hours inside the mind of a 13 year old boy" (as a friend described it) when it hits my shores.

Sheesh. I read through all of that and my head is about to explode from all the support group therapy bullshit and the five dollar words being thrown around to cover their dimestore intellects.

And the ban-happy mods really need to just get the fuck over themselves. A woman has the absolute right to disagree, and has the right to not be "supportive" (*gag*) if she doesn't want to. If someone's an idiot, or being way too pretentious for their own good, they deserve to be called on it. It's not everyone else's job to validate their miserable, fucked up little lives. Bitch please. =P

Holy Hell. So far I've only read the OP, and fuck if I can understand what she's on about half the time. I mean, this is a single sentence:

Call this film noir if you like, but don't pretend that a film that employs povs as narrative devices and gives none to women characters (despite the fact that the Willis/Alba plotline is largely dependent on promoting the "innocence" of the fact that she wrote him endearing letters in prison caused Willis' character, pushing 60, fall in love with an 11-year-old-girl ((who when she comes to visit him is oddly clad in leather fetishwear)), that is, straddling everyone's favorite Lolita motif) if anything you think we'd get her voice reading some of the content, but no..) and advocates women's "not screaming" as their best way to survive (this is a feature of every vignette in the plotline), that is a film that effectively denies and promotes the silencing of women is employing the same ambiguities and ways in as noir does.

You claim to be a scholar. Please learn to construct a coherent sentence, kthxbai.

I do hate the term "feminazi," but fuck me if that isn't the closest thing to a real fascist feminist I've ever seen.

And every feminazi deserves a feminiemoller, thus:

When they praised the style and technique,

When they tried to talk about the strong female characters,

When they asked what I expected from something called “Sin City,”
I threw a hissy because that still doesn't excuse the misogynistic portrayal of all the women as half-dressed hookers.

When they pointed out that it was violent against men too,

I've been waiting for the wank to hit the fan on this since I saw the movie last Sunday. Someow I managed to enjoy this movie, even though I am apparently going to be going to feminist hell. Of course, I was probably already saved a seat there for enjoying Bond films. This is why everyone should be bisexual...we can all objectify everyone together. And then sing kumbaya.

While I think that a film starring a half-naked Jessica Alba should, in fact, have to also star or at least devote significant screen time to a half-naked Jude Law--y'know, in the interest of fairness--and while I haven't seen the movie, I feel that my icon here may be wildly appropriate.

Ah, Sin City. Can't wait to see you again this weekend~

Can't argue that the movie's not sexist, but at the same time, the theme of all the three parts of the movie was, "You hurt a woman--say goodbye to your balls!" Now *that* is the message I want men to be learning XD
