Remember this wank, where we had an influx of the oh noes! Think of the children type parents? Well they went and started their own blog to bitch about teh_sex, especially in the Harry Potter fandom. Well, they were chased off of blogging by trolls (Yeah. So sad. I know.)

Anyhoo, they delete everything, except for one post telling readers that they're being deprived because of the trolls, but hey feel free to duke it out in comments.

So people do.

A little fic..just for Fanfic Savvy

Once upon a time there were a group of people who like to butter their toast on the wrong side. Now they knew that most people up and down the street found this to be perverse, so they only buttered their bread the wrong side up in their own house. Nevertheless, the neighbors complained. "Far be it from us to judge you, but our children can see into your kitchen window!"

"Even with our curtains drawn?" asked the butter toasters.

"Well, the material is rather flimsy," replied the neighbors.

"Horrors. Okay. Well, could you please ask your children not to look in our window?" asked the butter toasters.

"Hey, they may be our kids but you are the ones having toasting parties," insisted the neighbors.

"Okay, we'll put heavy shades on our windows," said the butter toasters. "We certainly don't want the children to be harmed."

For a while all was calm until one day the neighbors returned.

"What now!" cried the butter toasters. "Are your children watching us some other way?"

"Well, no. It's just that there are other butter toasters out there and they don't have heavy shades on their windows so we wanted you to go over and get them to put up shades," said the neighbors.

"We don't know them. We've never met," said the butter toasters.

"Well, you all put butter on your toast the wrong way," said the neighbors.

"No, actually, some use margarine. Some use oleo and some put on peanut …." Said the butter toasters.

The neighbors threw their hands up in despair. "Stop. The horror. We can't hear anymore perversity. Just get the others to put heavy shades on their windows."

"How? We don't know them. We just know the members of our little club. And why would they listen to us?" asked the butter toasters. "Besides we have so much toast to butter. Yumm. Buttered Toast."

The neighbors were angry. They didn't understand why anyone would butter their toast the wrong way. They didn't want to have to go up and down the street making sure that the other butter toasters had their shades drawn. The butter toasters were angry because they felt they had put shades up on the windows but were still being held responsible for the actions of strangers. And the children never did learn it was rude to look into other people's windows.

Yay, for entitlement whores! They make the weekend bright and shiny.

Edit to add: Good-bye, cruel internets! *throws self off cliff*

Edit the second: The how to parent your kidshelping hands community springs up.

Edit for kicks: the fandom fairy tale hits metaquotes on LJ

Edit because I knew this was coming: The child-free comm on LJ sends up their wank signal.

Edit because it was too good not to point out: Damn those thieving HP fen! Where, oh where can we go to avoid Cassie Claire!?

FW's recent wanks have had nothing on these guys. It's been endless entertainment from the start.

I really wonder what the trolls were posting though. I mean, until you've been subjected to pictures of Goatse etc, you just havn't seen the worst the internet has to offer.

Most sci-fi conventions attract more women than men.

A little OT, but does anyone know if this is true? Statistically? 'Cause at the comic and anime conventions I go to, there are definately more guys (unless that's just the crossplay confusing me XD)

Oh, and not counting Yaoi-con >.>

Ooooh, tell us another one please! What about the tragic romance of the Hogwarts Squid? Or the One Wank to Rule Them All (I heard it was going to be turned into a three-part movie, but I have my doubts as to how well they can pull off the characters and the effects. The armadillo is SUCH a complex character)

The fanfic savvy people weren't bad at all. They were just parents who had come across something online that concerned them, and wanted to find out more. I posted several comments and received calm and polite answers in response. They actually listened to what people in fandom had to say, as opposed to just screaming "you're all paedophilic perverts!". They weren't trying to shut down sites or cause trouble, they just wanted information.

It's wonderful when I'm right.

I knew from the get-go that these folks would show their true wanky colors in due time. Sure they seemed just curious and reasonable, but they're parents worried about Internet Porn, and that should make everyone's wankdar ping like mad.

Once again, with feeling: We the fanficcers are NOT your babysitters.

BTW, I'm a mom and frankly, some of their early arguments made me LOL. Come on, your pre-teen "accidentally" found smut while googling innocent phrases like "feathers"? Come. On.

Honestly, I'm surprised it took so long for this to get posted here; I half expected it to show up yesterday when Heidi started posting.

I was posting there myself, and found it kind of... insidious. The comments I posted got extremely polite responses, as did most other people's, but every time someone asked why FA (for example) had to be taken off the search engine instead of them telling their children that they'd have their internet taken away if they got caught reading R-rated stories, the question was either ignored, or led to complaints about how we ficcers were ignoring our responsibilities.

I'm really disappointed that this panned out the way it did. I don't have a site, and my fics get posted f-locked in my lj, but I'd be willing to spread the word if someone else created a site. And seeing as the FanficSavvy crew claimed that someof their members had their own sites already, I don't see how it was overstepping our boundaries to ask them to put up a site telling interested ficcers how to kid-proof their work.

I was fascinated and a bit scared by parts of that, the parts that never got read out in church), I still don't get it. What's so difficult about monitoring your child's internet access? It's much easier to deal with than TV or a library or a 7-11, for that matter.

As an older sister who looks after some teenage and pre-teen brothers on a regular basis, I have my own set of rules. Pre-teens don't get to use the internet, unless I'm sitting with them. (Yes, I'm cruel, dears. Deal with it.) Early teenagers you keep an eye on, and any smart person can do that quite easily. They're not exactly *good* at hiding things.

Late teenagers you cross your fingers and hope for the best. It's out of your control.

What gets me about all this is why bother? Set up a parental control system. Give the kids their own acess password and screen and make that a nice tight p0rn free net. Then a nice history search will let you know if you missed anything. I just don't see what is so hard about doing that.

Oh, honest to GOD, parents. I will not think of the children (who probably are thinking of me - or someone else - naked, no matter how much you wish to desexualize them), because you know where I read my first fairly graphic sex scene, which was underage incest? In a VC Andrews novel I got from the elementary school library.

This has probably been said before, but really, will you just listen: sex is a fact of life. It's the source of life. It's everywhere. What will make your children treat it responsibly is DISCUSSION. Not total isolation from anything having to do with the subject, which will only lead to ignorance and heightened curiosity, and we all know what they lead to. If not, just ask [info]tomakobriefs, she'll give ya the lowdown.

Damnit, somebody got a mop? I've made quite a mess over here.

You know, there are a few things these Moms and Pops need to understand:

a) Children are not as innocent as parents like to think they are. Most of them probably know more than their parents do and many kids are internet savvy at a young age.

b) Many fanfic sites work to try to keep underage children from accessing their more questionable material. Kids however, can lie, manipulate or code their way around some of these protections. This is why mummy and/or daddy should check on what kiddies are doing on the internet.

c) Parents are STILL responsible for policing their children's viewing/reading/internet habits. Sorry, but there's no way around this one. My parents did that with my reading/viewing material when I was a kid (and if we had've had intenet in the 1970's then that would have been monitored too) and if I disobeyed their rules, I was punished.

d) The world cannot be safeguarded entirely for children short of vacuum sealing them and putting them on a shelf for the first 20 years of their lives...and that won't work either. :P

e) Fandom is not one big happy, conspiratory family out to corrupt children. Fandom_Wank alone stands as testimony against the one big happy, conspiratory family part. Corrupting children might be a nice thought to some, but well, some kids are more corrupt than the adults are, I'm afraid.

f) While I do think it's the responsiblity of everyone to keep our children safe, I also think that folks have to be realistic. Besides, making a HUGE WANKY deal about it gets kids curious and then you really have a problem on your hands. Sheesh, I remember being a kid and there were a lot of things I sought out just because I was emphatically told not to. The bigger the deal my folks made of it, the more I sought it out.

g) And anyone who thinks a preteen found a smutty website just by searching using the word "feather" doesn't know their kid very well. I've been using "normal" words to find pr0n for ages and only once did I find any. And that was by cheating.

and

h) Their, there, they're are three different words. :P

Dear Fanfic Notsoverysavvy,

I wholeheartedly agree that it is in everybody's best interest to keep your children far, far away from me. Not only because I like to talk about the buttsex, but also because I hate your children. Also, they cannot spell. I am often tempted to swat the little buggers upside the head whenever they pop up in my fandom. But, since I can neither identify nor reach them from over here in my big, comfy chair, I demand that you do so for me. They are, after all, your damn children and your damn responsibility.

Sincerely,
a large portion of the internet

Wow, I was just re-reading that Mom Brigade thing last night too, since I missed most of the good stuff last time.

Hey Moms! How about grounding your kids from the computer if they won't keep both hands on the keyboard?
