Looks Like Fanficrants' Refractory Period is Up
What happens when somebody wanders into a community dedicated to ranting about bad writing and attemps to defend chatspeak?

People get wanky.

Some highlights:

1. [info]laeladair(the OP) lets us know that using proper grammar, especially on AIM, is now considered snooty:

My professor was talking about how language evolves over time and how every author incorporates the evolution of language into their style. For example, to use the word ‘whom’ in writing anymore is considered ostentatious and more than a little arrogant.

It’s because it’s convenient and sitting there on IM and typing out all your sentences as if you were writing a paper makes you look pretentious.

2. Apparently, bad grammar = poetry according to the OP.

3. Some creative backpedaling arguing from the OP.

4. [info]kannaophelia officially owns the OP.

I did participate in the discussion, but I don't think I was being particularly wanky. If you think otherwise, I'll move this to [info]i_wank. Else, enjoy.

Ah, yes. I've seen this before.

Professor gives bullshit information to a college class (news flash to laeladair; professors are just as susceptible to politics, bias, and nonsense as anyone else—a PhD does not make you all-knowing), laeladair takes it as gospel and splurts on fanficrants, the commenters try to set her right, and she spews out more bullshit that makes her look as dumb as the legions of netspeakers.

Check.

... There. Are. No. Words. Or rather, there are, but I'm afraid they might go over some people's heads, and I wouldn't want to come across as snooty, now would I?

I mean she goes on and on about 'thinking outside the box' but her whole rant was based on *someone else's* opinion.

Okay, I know "write for fun," and I know the OP probably doesn't consider this "real" poetry, according to her definition. But I'm still trying to wrap my brain around being lectured about poetry from a girl who has this on her ff.net profile:

"Fun, short poem about my favorite game on Neopets. It's easy to understand, fun to read, and yes: it rhymes."

*logic go boom*

As a Communicator, I can see the OP's point of 'knowing your audience' and using incorrect grammar purposely to reach them. I have employed that, aside of 'incorrect' uses of the spoken language (overuse of slang, quirks in dialogue), while dealing in surveys targeted to a very low class with poor basis in education (they feel threatened by eloquence and do not open up the dialogue otherwise).

Pity the OP failed to apply their own 'logic' to 'know' their audience in the community they decided to post the rant.

*head desk*

On a side note, bad grammar equals poetry? Damn, news to me.

Oh fuck no. My last supervisor routinely asked me to look over his papers for college to proofread. He was a smart man, but English grammar and spelling were not his strong point and he realized it (making him look a lot smarter in my eyes by at least acknowledging it).

I hate it when people defend language that makes you sound stupid. And netspeak? Works better than anything else to make you sound like a particularly moronic twat.

Did I misread this poorly put together argument or did she basically tell me to it's alright to use netspeak with a boss just so he doesn't feel stupid because of my superior grammatical powers?

I use proper grammar and try to use proper spelling in IMs. (Let's be honest, typos happen when you're working quickly and you don't catch them, no big deal)

However, if I ever had a boss that got defensive and was angry because I used proper grammar and spelling, my nose would be in the want ads and fliging my resume out there for a lot of people to see. Why? Because I'm not making myself stupid for someone else.

Unless it's my kids. Then there's the whole embarrassment factor. (But that's a seperate parental rightissue.)

Opposite for me. Sometimes if I can't understand what my boss is saying in big words that I don't understand(and of course it's not simple words!), I have to ask what she means or try say it back in my head.

ARGH. This kind of thing annoys me so much- from the attitude of inside the English department. I've encountered people there who believe that trying to teach grammar to students is not only a waste of time but actively harmful, since all of them have "their own languages," meaning the way they write, and by "imposing our rules," we're "limiting their freedom and confining their minds to become cogs in the great machine, instead of setting them free to create new worlds of sound and sense."

The stuff in quotes is verbatim from a speech at my TA orientation. I think I have to go lie down now.

The bit about evolving language is true, but I disagree with the idea that proper grammar makes one look pretentious.

That said, I DO use netspeak and stupid spelling, but only when I talk to my sister on AIM- I used to use AIM all the time and when I did, I used proper grammar- but now I just talk to sis and the language has since devolved. It's sort of a joke that got out of hand. Yeah, it makes me sound like a moronic twit, but I'm not denying the fact that I am one, so there.

Other than that, I try to use good grammar, regardless of the medium.
