Fanficrants is a pit of spooge
Zannechaos writes What a woman is. Many 'Word'ings follow after her post, but [info]kerikeri does not like what Zanne has to say. It is then returned by yuuo. Sarcastic use of 'darling' abounds. I am not responsible for your lack of reading comprehension.

Enjoy.

Okay, a woman can possess all the attributes described, but why would she want to?

My main objection to the original post was that it sounded like a really long Hallmark card.

It also seems really familiar.

Blah, was that ever a craptacular post. "A woman is...next, on Lifetime!"

This is why I can't read fanficrants - if someone's posting there they are obviously cool and so happening to disagree with the rant is just horrid, darling, and will get you called a harpy. At least we're laughing at the zannechaos's replies here, right? Right? Oh god, please tell me we are.

Am I the only person who wouldn't mind seeing more men in the fandom, or at least the parts that always seem to come up on here? Not that the healing power of cock is necessarily going to fix anything, but just for balance?

Yes, I'm a self-hating woman for being queasy about any group of people which seems to be overwhelmingly female. It's not like fanboys aren't scary. They're just scary in different ways.

Where are all these butch women in fanfiction? I'd sure like to read about some women who weren't being all meltingly soft for a change (something that I've always found to be rather pervasive in femslash, anyway; I rarely read het).

Ehh. I get what the OP is saying, but it was somewhat confusing.

For example, the OP more or less completely undermines the point by saying-

A woman can be all of these things: strong, practical, dangerous, efficient, and eshew the normal stereotypes of lace and roses and sappy sentimentalism, and still be very much a woman - soft, feminine, capable of tenderness when the situation is appropriate.

(and other such phrases- I just chose the one for an example)

-because, due to the awkward wording, the last clause implies that soft femininity and tenderness are inherent traits for females- even though the OP is trying to say that females have different facets and can't be herded into stereotypes.

We all know that "softness" and femininity are socialized in females (think: female = biological sex, feminine = socialized gender), and are not necessarily natural traits; as thus, the OP gives the impression that, despite attempting to present a "middle ground", she's still buying into traditional gender notions and its extremes (i.e. the classic "Maddonna vs. Whore"). That is a contradiction, and thus, invalid.

It's like saying "You can have the best of both worlds, or the best of one world, or the other, or no worlds at all," but then saying "But this world should always be there."

I'm certainly not saying that this is what the OP was trying to say. I'm just saying that in my opinion, the faulty writing obscures the meaning of the piece. Perhaps that's why many people got confused over it, hence the kerfluffle. Again, this is only my speculation.

I think people are focusing too much on the OP, and forgetting the truly classic gems in this wank, like the way wolfychan basically rephrases the OP in the form of an argument. I swear I couldn't tell if she was arguing or agreeing! :D

Or that dianewaters didn't want to be friends with any girl who would *ever* submit to a man under *any* circumstances. (I liked the reply that got - "So if my boyfriend wants Chinese, and I don't really give a shit, does that mean I have to turn in my feminist card?" And she answered it *seriously*?) I guess I'll tell my boyfriend that everything in this house will now be my way or the highway, because that's what dianewaters says real women should act like. ;_;

Also, I think a great deal of this wank springs from people seeing the word 'submission' as meaning that one must submit to the will of someone else (presumably male in this case) at all times because they are inferior. The OP seemed to be saying more of "you're not any weaker for letting someone else have their way once in awhile", which apparently caused great ire among some of the more domineering members of the community.

And the moral of this story is, don't post at fanficrants, because it is a sea of splooge. The end.

I enjoyed kerikeri insistance that to be a woman one "possess a vagina".
HELLO!?
WON'T SOMEONE THINK OF THE TRANSGENDERED?

It's things like this that start making me question my gender identity again.

Stop it! You're making me confused!

I think I finally pinned down what bugs me about the OP here.

Zanne seems to be making, and subsequently conflating, two arguments:
1) Women can be strong and still be polite/respectful/etc.
2) Women can be strong and still be fruity-frippy-femmy.

What bugs me, I think, is the conflation here -- the idea that being polite/respectful/etc. is somehow as femmy as liking frilly skirts and pretty jewelry, and that being polite and respectful is somehow equivalent to submitting to men (either sexually or not). I think of politeness and respect as qualities possessed by decent human beings, not by women in specific. They're not "feminine" traits. The idea that being a decent human being is as feminine as playing Pretty Pretty Princess -- and furthermore, that if I do the former I really should be doing the latter, plus playing the sub in bed -- just plain weirds me out. Can I be polite in my Doc Martens, or do I need to have my heels on?

Dude, I LOVE THOSE!

I suddenly have a strong urge to not shave and wear Birkenstocks, just to annoy. And I HATE Birkenstocks.

(And once again I feel the need to point out that once we're all gender-free brains in jars, in return for the bits we've lost, we'll at least be compensated by not having to read glurge like this anymore. (Or change lightbulbs.))

That post rubbed me the wrong way, and I can't exactly say why. I guess cause I tried to apply it to my two female heroes (Sarah Connor from Terminator 2 and Samus Aran from the Metroid series) and it didn't really fit. And they're my role-models!
I'm deeply confused. Perhaps I'll go watch Lifetime.
also doesn't apply to Dahlia Gillespie from Silent Hill who is the love of my life cough cough

When I wake up I do NOT think "How does this identify me as a woman? Am the choices I am making being true to ?" When I get up I think "Caffinated... must become... caffinated."

I see both their points, yo. I am so sick of Buffy/ Chloe Sullivan/ Lara Croft/ Sydney Bristow/ etc/ etc/ etc. Some of us weren't born judo-loving asskickers and are inclined for whatever reason to make different kinds of choices. It always struck me as sexist to say that all things that are conventionally identified as "feminine" such as caregiving, aesthetic sensibility, emotional sensitivity, and so on are also considered inherently "weak." That implies that the only strength and value is in being male. *waves hand dismissively*

Having said that, I couldn't finish ZC's post without feeling the need to whip out my acoustic guitar and strum along soulfully. Criticism of conventional feminism doesn't need to be so fucking trite, y'all.

... I'll just go back to sticking pins in my Veronica Mars voodoo doll now.
