Sakuracon Wank
Haven't wanked in awhile. Boy does it feel good. Anyway, I figured this counted as a fandom since an anime convention basically is a collection of fans.

SakuraCon took place last weekend in Seattle. I went, and I had fun, but clearly not everyone who went was satisfied.

Over at the forums, Tamer Brad lets everyone know. And it dissolves into wank.

Arguments about "peacebonding" cosplay weapon props are relatively tame, though some people seem to be taking the "perfection" of their costume to extremes.

One of Tamer Brad's problems with the con was that a staff member randomly spoke to him in Japanese, but was probably only being a fanboy rather than actually speaking it natively. However, he didn't express this in the best manner ("WE SPEAK ENGLISH HERE." and "If you want to speak Japanese, move to Japan or talk to people who speak Japanese.") and got a number of people, especially UberBeth, quite upset. ("My suggestion that you not attend is only reference the fact that you apparently don't like the ideas and intentions the convention is based on, so it would seem you would not have a good time.")

Attempts to defuse the tension ("Wow...who gave the 3-year-olds keyboards? Seriously guys, all of you need to chill.") were too little too late.

Tamer Brad accused UberBeth of having "come after him", and she responded with "I said "ignorant" as a statement pertaining to the fact that you were unaware or uninformed that the language and culture is largely what the convention is about, and your dislike of having the japanese language at the con. It was not meant as an insult, and I'm sorry you decided that it was."

However, Brad's patience began to wear thin. "You realize these are MY OPINIONS and you are under no obligation to agree with them, nor do they affect you in any way, so what is your problem?"

AnimeFreak responded "As much as I do express my belief that any person is entitled to personal opinion as it is a right that both you and I share, responding in such a manner where you are somehow higher than the other individual is not always a good thing, and in this case, it is not."

Many people say that if Brad has such a problem with the con, he should volunteer or join the staff in order to improve it. That idea doesn't go over so well.

It goes on and on, including Brad's girlfriend joining in. It's not the best wank out there, but it is somewhat amusing.

Gotta love Sakuracon. I didn't go last year, or this year. Mainly because due to lack of interest...

...but man. It is funny to see people spazzing like this. XD "omg im a minor and i couldnt dance with my g/f who's lik3 3 years older *emo tear*"

...*stops* u_U;

And you know...apparently they *could*, too. I had a minor with me at the fanfiction bedtime stories and as long as she was with me the whole time, she could be out until all hours. And we *were*! That thing lasted until 7 am!

Apparently they weren't that consistent with the minor-accompanied-by-guardian rules. I was at the dance on Saturday night and they made all the minors leave at midnight, guardian or no. (It started around 10:30 though, so unless they didn't show up until the last minute, they should have had ample time to dance..) I wasn't at the dance on Friday so I don't know what the rules regarding minors were there.

Incidentally, I actually thought the dance was more fun WITH the minors. Probably because it got more "hardcore" afterwards.

Well, they kinda had an erratta with it. Initially they had kicked the minors out (she covered her badge with a pillow since she wasn't really a minor, but had to have a minor badge because of her lack of ID at registration), but they later came back in and said "We goofed, they can be here if they have their guardian with them" so someone went back and got the guy who had to leave.

Well, even if you do get on staff it doesn't mean you'll be able to change things. At Katsucon, my friend and I were staff and we weren't given much to do because our boss/friend was out of the hotel most of the time. When we did get something to do, someone else already had it under control so we were just walking around most of the con with our theme song, "We are the con staff who don't do anything..." Then after the con, our friend/boss told us we did a great job for about an hour of work.

Wait, there are cons that have enough staff that people can stand around and not do anything? Can we have some of these surplus staffers then? Animaritime's staff usually has to be multiple places at once!

Guy goes to Anime convention and is mad that someone speaks Japanese to him? Tell me, what happened when he went to the viewing rooms?

"Make 'em talk american! I didn't come here to READ a movie!"

Well, maybe he was offended at the HORRIBLY BUTCHERED JAPANESE COMING FROM CRACKERS.

When I was at that con ~2 years ago, there was some crazy-ass Japanese being thrown around.

Yeah, later in the thread he clarifies that's the type of mangled Japanese that bothered him. It bothers me too, honestly, but going to an anime con it's something I kind of expect.

Never mind that they tried to make a kimono out of a satin bathrobe, the fact that they couldn't bring their REAL KATANA into the con RUINED their costume!

he's complaining about a $50 registration fee? the Harry Potter Witching Hour symposium is something like $150US if you pre-register and $200 at the door.

The $50 was for all three days of the con, and at the door. It was less than that if you pre-registered. (I think around $30 for the entire weekend, which considering how much stuff they had was a pretty good deal I think.)

Minor age is rather ... insane. I'm sixteen years old and got stuck with a minor badge.

Because...16 is considered to be a minor here in America =D

Well, damn.

Throwing out any and all bias here for a moment--

$50 for a convention seems fair. That was the door price? Cause wow, I just paid that to pre-register for a con. o_o;

But I gotta agree with Brad on the fan-Japanese. Cause. That gets annoying, no matter where it's used. Reminds me of Freddy from Ghastly Comics. ... >>;

Arguments about "peacebonding" cosplay weapon props are relatively tame, though some people seem to be taking the "perfection" of their costume to extremes.

There was, in fact, the Cardboard Tube Samurai from Pennyarcade who had to have his cardboard tube peacebonded. When asked, he said he thought it was probably out of a joke, anyway.

Amusingly, I brought in a big keyboard for my OS-tan costume and I got NO comments about peacebonding it. o.O
