The Doctor was right. Wanking does cause madness.
Two classic elements of British Broadcasting culture come together, in messy array.

Doctor Who, the televisual delight of several generations, has a new series out. There is much rejoicing.

Points of View is a classic pool of spooge for the BBC. Irate viewers and listeners from the English heartlands have free reign to generally rant and rave about their pet broadcasting irks. Sort of like Livejournal, only the taxpayer pays for it.

John Blewitt (he didn't) is one of these people.

The Reverend demands LOVE, not FEAR.

"I am a preacher in the Methodist Church and I was completely shocked and unprepared for the Dr Who episode broadcast on Saturday 09 April 05.
The subject matter is very REAL and such activities as seances and contacting the dead DO HAPPEN today with disastrous consequences many times. Messing about with spiritual areas we cannot control should not be done - this is clear from the Bible.
Apart from my disquiet about the content of Dr Who, I was also concerned that it was screened at 7.00 pm when many young and vulnerable people would have been watching. In a day when Christian values seem almost to have been forgotten we need to remember again that LOVE not FEAR should be at the centre of our community and national life."

Fairly standard responses, so far. The "You're a fool, and you don't understand the underlying moral!!" posts. The sarcastic faux support. The accusations of  BBC sockpuppetry. The "Ha, a Christian being upset about fiction!" posts.

Not to mention the illiterate trolls, stating that "popes, preachers programmes like dr Who are all daft and the loonies who listen and watch are nuts." And of course, where would we be without the classic self-incriminating "you should probably add people who post on the points of view message board to that list too".

All in all, a tasty little Saturday tea-time wank.

It's always fun when people prove that the US doesn't have a corner on religious lunacy.

For certain values of fun, anyway.

It's comforting, if nothing else.

At least it's not just us.

(for certain values of us, of course.)

You should see the guy that hangs around Oxford Street tube station with the microphone and little portable speakers on a stap around his neck. He's my favourite religious nutter ever because it is just so much fun to wind him up.

He tends to ask a lot of questions, especially ones about choosing a life with Jesus over a life f sin. Of course, this is the cue to start chanting 'Sin! Sin! Sin!'

Oh, I want to read this wank, but here in Canada we only just got to see the second episode last night, so I don't want to be spoiled. Phooey.

On an unrelated, hijacking the thread kind of way note, does anyone have any good recs for fic based on the new series? I don't know where to look at all. *puppy dog eyes*

I've been noticing that the eps aired on Friday usually show up as torrent sometime late-ish on Sunday...

goat sacrifice.

Also, you can go to paid accounts and buy yourself one or wait for one of those days the owners decide to open up accounts for a while.

All I ever managed to learn from the Ouija board was that some of us smelled and others liked a certain boy. However, if there's a clear message that comes through all the complaining about depictions of magic and the occult, it's that praying works sometimes, but magic works all the time. That's why we read so many stories in the paper about disastrous, seance-related accidents. Perhaps sci-fi and magic shows need to run a disclaimer: CLOSED COURSE--PROFESSIONAL DEMONIAC. DO NOT ATTEMPT.

Bwahahahahaaaa!

Yes! Because contacting other side worked out SO WELL for the characters in the episode, didn't it? It encourages seances in much the same way that Jaws encourages public bathing.
