Because Diagnosis Murder tie-in novels are CLASSIC LITERATURE, you plebes!
I was going to post to [info]fandom_lounge but I think this qualifies as wank. If you don't think so, let me know and I'll move it.

I have been living in the internet equivalent of a cave in Tibet, because hey! Have you heard of this new "in" thing? It's called SLASH and it's sooooo wrong and omg hold me mommy!

This of course spawns some responses, both reasonable and hysterical.

Meljean Brook explains why she writes fanfic and asks readers and writers a few questions about what they read/write and how they feel about the legalities of it.

I'm a real writer and you're NOT, nanny nanny boo boo! In other words, Lee Goldberg who is a real professional writer (you know him, of course! He's the one behind that dramatic masterpiece, Diagnosis Murder! Yes, the one starring Dick Van Dyke. Shut up. It is TOO real writing) needs to relax, just a wee bit. Like maybe he needs a couple of valiums, a half bottle of JD, and to get laid, because I can tell his stress level is through the roof from way over here.

Thanks to [info]coolredwyne over on LJ who pointed these links out.

And remember: no trolling. If you're going to comment on any of those blogs, and I don't doubt you will, don't be an asshat. Thanks.

At first I thought Lee Goldberg was the guy who made all those awesome inventions, like how to get a porcupine to power a nuke plant, and I was totally ready to take him at his word. Then I remembered that was Rube Goldberg, and this guy wrote for a show that kind of reminds me of "Matlock."

Interesting aside: Googling "diagnosis: muder" gave me "diagnosismurder.co.uk" as the first link--with forums, books, episode guides, FAN FICTION, and more! Thanks, diagnosismurder.co.uk!

Is Lee Goldberg the one who writes Z-grade licensed paperbacks, googles his name all the time, and haunts fanfiction discussion boards insisting that his stuff is OMG REEL ART and fanfic SO ISN'T nanny-nanny-boo-boo? Or am I thinking of someone else?

And they call themselves real LJ users! Not looking at any slash smut communities! *sigh* When will they learn?!

Oy.

In my experience, the bright line between licensed novels and fanfic- especially in the Buffy and Farscape fandoms- is that the best licensed novels are about half as likely as average fanfics to have on-target characterization, adherance to canon, and coherant and believable plots.

There is a licensed Farscape novel where Moia burns coal, for crap's sake.

I don't know anything about Diagnosis Murder, so I Googled it. The first result lead straight to:

that has a link on the front page that goes to:

All I saw in the sea of wank was a mention of Swordspoint by Ellen Krushner and then I got distracted. Where the hell is that book? I thought I left it in my room...

"The copyright infringement bothers me and bothers me, and then it bothers me some more. Fictional characters are intellectual property. Property. That's why books are copy righted. Those ideas--those characters--belong to the author."

OH IS THAT HOW IT WORKS? *Slaps forehead* I'll be damned. I thought I owned Harry Potter. Now I feel silly about writing that C&D letter to that JK Rowling girl. :(

Phantom brings the wank (http://www.phantomfans.net/index.php?showtopic=7711). Again. Starts off fairly civilly, but soon degenerates into 18 circular pages of "Emmy Rossum r teh sux0rz!" and "i likd her ur just jeluos!" Including accusations of condescension and elitism, a mini-grammar wank around page 16 or 17, personal attacks, and a fair amount of actual condescension and elitism. And drunkencynic, RossumButler, and Schattenfreude just keep going... and going... and going...

~another wank-bearing anonymouse, a few months too young for a JF account. woe.

Ah, I see the inevitable "Well, at least we can all agree that slash in Harry Potter is TEH WRONG because those kids are, what, like, ten or something?" has been brought into the argument. *rolls eyes* WhatEVER. We had a huge fight with Lee Goldberg at Godawful Fanfiction a few months ago, and I think that pretty much gave me my fill of trying to convince people that fanfic really isn't the worst way to spend one's time.

Lee Goldberg again?

Lee, honey, you wrote a 'hilarious' scene in which a character wiped his ass with a faxed copy of William Katt's resumé. You don't get to judge what is and is not legitimate writing.

I LOVE that these people are totally forgetting that plenty of professional authors have written fiction in the Sherlock Holmes universe. I guess all these authors who are still writing in one of the most well-loved canons in Western literature need to hand in their shiny writer badges now, from Carol Nelson Douglas to Neil Gaiman to... many more I'm forgetting.

Plus, on the topic of Sacrilege (a wonderful site, by the way, which gets my A++ seal of approval), how is putting your Holmes/Watson slash fic up on the web any worse than writing and publishing a tawdry romance between Holmes and Irene Adler?

I left a message on her blog. Hope I wasn't an asshat. ;)

Here's what I said:

HelenKay wrote: *Really, we should do whatever we can to promote kids' creativity and writing but maybe the goal should be to transfer that excitement for existing fiction to some original fiction of their own.*

Speaking as a long-time fanfiction writer (and I started writing fics as a young teenager), I can assure you right now that any attempt by an outside force to 'transfer' that love of fanfiction writing to something else will fail. You might as well try to 'transfer' Stephen King's love of writing horror fiction into a love of writing romantic comedy that has fluffy happy people and no evil spirits and horrors from beyond the grave.

Ain't gonna happen, no way, no how.

Fanfiction writing and fanfiction critiquing is something in me that can't be shaken out, destroyed, or 'transferred' to writing orginal fiction. I don't want to write orginal fiction at this point in my life; I feel like writing fanfiction. That's just the way it is.

HelenKay wrote: *Putting these well known characters in situations that, at best, can be described as out of context?  Well, that's just wrong in my book.*

As it is in mine. We in the fanfiction world call this problem 'OOC' (meaning Out Of Character). Fanfiction that has too many characters being OOC is called 'badfic'. And there are several places on the 'Net where badfics are thrashed to pieces with much sarcasm and wit. While we can't actively remove the badfic unless it violates the uploading rules of, say, Fanfiction.Net, we can point out its flaws of spelling, grammar, characterization, and mechanics whilst having a damn good time of it, too.

A place such as GodAwfulFanFiction is the spot to go to for this sort of brutal criticism. I'm a member there, myself.

Just my two cents, anyway. :)

~TheScornfulRoman.

Her part about we (and who is her 'we', exactly?) should transfer someone ELSE's love of writing fics struck a raw nerve in me.

They're going to be 16 in the next book, people. We are not talking little kids in short pants and ducky pajamas, we're talking people at the age where hormones rage and remove any semblance of reasonable thought, dammit!

Lee Goldberg.

Lee Lee Lee.

I think you are just upset 'cause nobody would ever want to write RPS Crossover Slash with you and your characters from Diagnosis Murder, which... would be a Mary Sue, if I am not mistaken. And we all know the reason why, don't we? Even the best authors in the universe couldn't make us believe that you could ever untighten that asshole enough to stick a pencil in there.

Because, of course, "real" writers are deific beings who dwell in the clouds, subsist on hope and sunshine, and are incapable of, you know, just asking people to stop writing fanfiction or drawing fanart of their creations (lest their divine interference render blind the mere mortals who gaze upon their polite requests that fanficcers cease and desist).

Thank God that brave individuals and law-abiding professionals are willing to speak up and defend the poor, endangered spotted owl "real" writer.
