Mostly Harmless Hitchhiker's Guide Book-to-Film Wank
Did a perfunctory search for this in the archives, but didn't find any mention of it within the past few weeks. So, here we go.

MJ Simpson, once-webmaster of the Douglas Adams super-mega-fansite Planet Magrathea is, according to a quote from the BBC on the site's splash page: "Britain's leading Douglas Adams expert." I say "once-webmaster" because he's decided to give up.

According to his Fuck all y'all farewell letter:

"I have for some time been fed up with the negative attitude of the Douglas Adams estate who for four years have been happy to make money from projects that I have worked on or even initiated but have otherwise been thoroughly unhelpful and antagonistic towards me."

Pity the BNF, overworked and underappreciated. ::facepalm::

"the thing that has tipped the balance for me is the unwarranted, ill-informed personal abuse and libel which has been directed towards me on the IMDB, livejournal and many other websites in the wake of my review of the film."

"I could put up with the pathetic, jealous ramblings of those sad types who feel the need to criticise something they haven't read, describing something they haven't seen. But what has broken my will is the vitriolic personal abuse and libel which has started spreading across the net from various individuals who don't know me."

What caused the splooge? He recently posted a disappointing review [short review for the tl;dr set] of the new Hitchhiker's Guide movie, going so far as posting a list of things that aren't in the film. Wank has exploded far and wide amongst Adams-fen, mostly wringing their hands with worry over what favorite bits of the radio series/television show/books got cut out, how the story has been dumbed down, and blaming Disney or the whole of the United States of America for ruining it.

Personally, I would willingly pay nine dollars to sit in a dark movie theater and wank to watch Martin Freeman running around in pajamas and a bathrobe for two hours.

(A more paranoid person than myself might think that some of these, the ones who have joined discussion boards in the past week and since then posted on no other subject than myself, were studio plants. But not I.)

*dies laughing*

I promise: One does not have to be a studio plant to find you irritating.

Oh, and Bill Bailey is the whale! Worth the price of entry alone.

OMG, his will is broken! Come, my fellow vultures, let's swoop in and feast upon his exposed ego! Mmmmm...bilious....

(Oh, and I must say that if his description of the literal aspects of the movie are anywhere close to accurate, I already hate it with the passion of a thousand fiery redheads. Truncating the brilliant Ford/Prosser interactions does not bode well at all for hope that the moviemakers grasped the humor of the books, nor does that list of omitted items. I mean, the British TV version was, well, British TV, but it at least had a relatively faithful grasp of the essentials of plot and humor that made the books and radio show so great. If the LotR and HP movies can remain faithful without being exactly the same, why the fuck can't HGttG or I, Robot?)

That review made me very sad.

Of course you couldn't keep everything in Hitchhiker under two hours, but it sounds like they decided to remove the inherent funny to make it fit.

So I do not blame the angry reviewer man.

I will, however, go to the movie. For two reasons.
a) Alan Rickman the Paranoid Android, and
b) Mos' Prefect.

I was wondering when this would show up here! I mean, gah, seeing a published author and well-respected authority pitch a typical BNF shitfit (OMG, everyone here is A EVIL STUDIO PLANT! I'm taking my website and going HOME!) was just priceless!

As for the review itself: meh. I expected massive cuts and for the movie to undergo radical changes. And the MJ's incredibly nitpickiness and tendency to claim that no one could like the movie unless they were paid off by Disney kind of put me off. So I think I'll just go see the movie and decide for myself. But then, I've got pretty low standards: if it's funny, I'll be happy; if not, well, there's always the books.

Over a lifetime of watching movies, I've seen a number of books I loved adapted into film, not the least of which is the Tolkine trilogy. And I've learned never to judge an adaptation ahead of time, and certainly never to take anybody else's word for whether or not it will be a triumph or a suckbomb. Such questions are completely up to the viewer's taste, and everybody's different.

I love the Hitchhiker's Guide, but I also love films, and I know you can't adapt a book to film as it's written. (Adams knew that too, judging by his reworking the story ever time it changed medium, but I guess that's beside the point to all those twitchy fans out there.) I'm not gonna take this guy's word for whether it's a good film or not, Disney notwithstanding. They've made some films I've loved and some I've hated, so I think I'll just go to the damn thing and judge for myself, thanks.

But the BNF? Please, dude. Nobody made you take all that time and trouble, and expecting Adams' estate handlers to appreciate you is damn naive, if you ask me.

Oh, and the thing that's getting me to plunk down my money ($11 here in LA) is Alan Rickman voicing Marvin. In my opinion, they couldn't possibly have cast him better. Nobody does a disgusted mutter like Rickman. He's the master.

I remember when this was originally posted on Slashdot, mostly just as a link to the review. Although the review was totally scathing, it struck me as probably very fair... the guy really justified his complaints very effectively, and used a LOT of examples.

I'm sorry, but I don't think his feeling that studio plants might be sabotaging his review is a totally paranoid one. An influential fan can sometimes make or break a niche movie such as this, and his review was an amazing indictment. He sold ME on not seeing it, that's for sure.

... the film also suffers by having an entirely nonsensical plot. It is driven by convenience and unexplained happenings.

Whaaaa? Isn't there a point where a whale spontaneously plummets to its death while pondering the meaning of life? And isn't there an Improbability Drive somewhere on the Heart of Gold?

No, not nonsensical or convenient at all. Not at all.

Yeah, its been said before. Here is where you treat your mind and your fan-brain, and turn it off. Then you build this nice little wall, with BOOK FANDOM on oneside, and MOVIE FANDOM on the other. Then you watch the movie, take it with a grin, and enjoy it just to spite those that changed it.

True, I would have loved to have the whimsical absent-minded way of story that Dougie gave us, you can't possible expect anyone else to be able to run about and make something just as good. And while I would have been insanely happy if the Movie was religious to the book, I'll just build my little wall, and Lmao at anything and everything I can find, while privately seetheing that A) Arthur actively chases Trillian, B)Ford's off-the-wall distracting ability is gone, C) Did I or did I not see a Zaphod with only one head and two arms???

So, in a vague effort to make some sort of point, I think MJ is over-reacting at the moment, but I shall pay full price to see the movie anyway. I like my doubled fandoms, thank you.

Personally, I never let a review influence me on what movies I go see and what movies I don't, whether it's by a professional critic or a fan. If it looks interesting to me, I'll go see it. Most times the movies I have liked have been the ones critics panned, and the ones I've hated were the ones critics loved.

Having said that...I love the Hitchhikers books...so yeah, I will more than likely go see the movie once it is released, and I'm sure I'll love it. Especially since Alan Rickman is involved in it. :)

Wasn't Adams working on the script before he died? How much did he get done that survived the movie making process? Maybe he wanted to cut some of it, so ... doesn't he win?

I also lose as a Hitchhiker fan as I don't remember some of the things that were so astonishingly cut. I fail~

And what is up with /this/?

Some of the new ideas, such as Malkovich’s character, were created by Douglas Adams himself but that doesn’t make them good ideas.

Ok, spend hours and hours bitching about how they've ruined Adams' work, and then bitch later about how Adams' ideas sucked too? The hell?
