Death Note License Wank
It wouldn't beat FMA licensing drama, still...

I'm still waiting to find out just what is so horrible about Viz that people think it's the end of the planet if a manga gets licenced by them. They seem to do all right to me.

But then, I'm not a raging die-hard scanlation monkey, thus I can't possibly know the truth.

Hrmph. I like Viz. They picked up my childhood anime love and released it first, and it didn't suck and at that point there were no such things as scanslations and it blew my little world because here it WAS and it was ON PAPER and I was sooo happy...

...

and then it got dubbed and I was even happier because, uh, well, at least one of the commercial releases of my baby didn't suck.

So Viz is my friend.

VIZ is OMGSOEVIL because sometimes they edit things so minor only the most anal retentive of the fans would care, translate into English, and they changed Zoro name to Zolo for legal reasons.

I'm not a particularly large fan of Viz because they, more than any other manga translation company, have been known to edit their manga. Although I laugh, and I mean LAUGH, when I think of what's going to happen to their precious "Must Keep The PG13 Rating" Edition of Yami no Matsuei when they hit later in the series. If they try to censor what MIGHT be a blow-job now, what on earth are they going to do when they get to a naked man being tentacle-raped by a giant snake? But I digress.

Really, though, Viz isn't as bad as some people make them out to be. I don't agree with how they edit some of their titles and don't state anywhere that they have been edited, but that doesn't mean that their translations aren't good or that their quality is bad.

I'm going to stick my neck out here and say that the reason Viz bothers me so much is really as a result of their policy in terms of names. I get it - in the West we use first name, last name, not last name, first name. But when you've got a character driven manga and you change the names, you're changing the character relationships, and thusly, the manga itself. If you go to the trouble to keep honorifics - which I think would confuse more Westerners than name order - it's not too much trouble to keep the name order the same too.

Honestly. It's Captain Tezuka, not Captain Kunimitsu. Urgh.

Well, the real answer is VIZ is owned (or something like that) by the Japanese company who owns Shonen Jump also. (Some stupid fans had to learn that the hard way.) VIZ has the SJ line of manga and people are shocked it got another SJ title?

At least TokyoPop is doing a great job with the Slayers novels but I'm not really a fan of any the manga they picked up so so I have no idea about any of that.

Apparently they abandon the slang after a few books. (I haven't gotten the later ones yet.) Also, they apparently apologized for the gender thing. ...which is not to say that I particularly trust the translation, just that to my understanding it greatly improves. (...but they killed the "S in Getbackers" line and must therefore be punished.)

Am I weird that I generally don't care who licenses manga just so long as I can buy and read it, instead of just looking at the pretty pretty pictures?

I will admit to being a bit pickier on anime simply because I get used to hearing certain voices for characters thanks to fansubs. But then that's what dvds are for.
