So [info]lizbee makes a post about the new Australian law. [info]iibnf then decides that chan writers are pedophiles. People are pissed.

As for what the deleted comment said? [info]snapetoy is happy to tell us. Then it's discovered that [info]iibnf has in fact written "kiddie porn". Ouch. Much backpedaling and claims of "parody" ensue. She also seems a bit unclear on exactly what chan is.

It's a pretty sensitive issue but I think calling fanfiction writers paedophiles is pretty damn out-of-line. Overall I'm really sorry the law doesn't see the difference between writing two 15 year olds shagging and downloading material where kids around 4-12 year old are being sexually abused and molested. That I am really sorry about.

And WTF, chan = kids up to five years old?! Er. Yes, I guess when I say "Mug-chan" or whatever, I mean that it's me as a very small child but I don't think but dude, it's NOT the same in fic. Who writes five year olds in sexual context? You know, OUT of Japan.

shota/lolicon and chan is one of my major, major major squicks. Don't like it, don't read it, run screaming from the mere hint of it. Not because it's immoral, or illegal, or fattening, or whatever, but just because the very idea makes my ovaries shrivel.

Ages of consent vary from place to place, but for my part, there is one hard, fast, non-negotiable requirement for the ability to consent to sexual activity, and that's puberty. If your body's not ready to start having sex, then neither are you. I leave the question of whether 13 to 17-year-olds are mature enough to engage in sexual activity to the parents or legal guardians of same.

That said, I think comparing writers of chan or shota/lolicon to pedophiles is ludicrous. People who write Highlander fanfic don't run around chopping their neighbors' heads off. Lord of the Rings fan writers don't actually believe they're hobbits...well...most of them don't, anyway.

I guess my position is: chan and/or shota is squicky, but if it's your thing, have fun with it. Just don't expect me to fru over it.

Boy, [info]iibnf's story's a parody? Could have fooled me. It seems at least as serious as other stuff I've seen fans write with that pairing. I don't think it glorifies what's happening, but it also doesn't take a mocking tone to it.

What's the jurisimprudence law? That if you have to tell someone it's a joke or a parody, by definition, the joke or parody has failed?

(Of course, maybe it didn't "become" a parody until she decided she was against chan. Just maybe).

Also, finally we get some wank kinda related to the Skyehawke thing. The HPfen had been surprisingly mature about it all up until now.

I've seen it stated over and over again in various threads in various ways, but they all boil down to: OMG! What the hell is wrong with adolescents being sexual? I mean *I* was at that age! It's normal, right??

You're right. It is normal. What's squicky is the thought of adults focusing on the sexuality of kids (real or fictional), not the fact that kids are sexual.

Ages of consent vary from place to place, but for my part, there is one hard, fast, non-negotiable requirement for the ability to consent to sexual activity, and that's puberty. If your body's not ready to start having sex, then neither are you.

Just out of curiosity; since you take puberty as a necessity for consent, what about a situation where someone has hit full puberty--menstruation and all--at age 10?

That was my situation--wearing a B-cup bra in 4th grade, had my period in 5th and pretty much hit my adult height (a whopping 5'1) and finished the rest of my adult development by 6th. Needless to say though, I wasn't anywhere near ready for any kind of real sexual activity at that age (though God knows I thought about it often enough--still do) as I was still taking my Barbies in the bathtub with me and was relentlessly immature for my age besides. And from what I've read, the age of puberty has continued to drop, especially in girls; it's not at all unusual these days for girls as young as eight or nine to have their periods and be otherwise pretty much done with puberty before they've even finished elementary school.

Just interested in hearing your thoughts on the matter.
