Harry Potter and new pope wankage
This is my first wank posting, though I am a long time lurker, so please be gentle.

There is much pope bashing and all is fun and games until [info]kristalie suggests that "Somebody needs to stop those awful books from being published." The wank then explodes.


We have this exchange which quickly degenerates into "commenting to flatter themselves."
emotionriot - i think it was a joke.
crushdmb - I know, I was half joking as well.
eatthepudding - and it sure was half hilarious!

We also have the "COME ON PPL READ SOMETHING GOOD NOT HARRY POTTER!" comment.
crushdmb - I actually liked the first two, but the hype on these books and the movies is WAAAY too much. They are entertaining and I think good, but not GREAT. There are books 9837835x better. COME ON PEOPLE read some classics or something!

Then we have [info]secretivexhero who says she is addicted to Harry Potter, but then feels the need to state that "BTW I am NOT one of those freak nerd kids."
secretivexhero - btw im not some nerdy kid with glasses & braces and has no friends. a lot of people tend to think hp fanatics are like that. im actually pretty hot & i have a lot of friends and have no glasses or braces =D i defy that nerdy stereotype that is the harry potter fandom. and most of them arent even nerds. all the friends i know who like em arent nerdy AT ALL. the ones who dont like em are all like "omgahh harry potter defies all rules of...blah blah" thats the point where i stop listening to their stupid words and give them the finger. lol. they bug me SO much. stupid nerds

Then we have this comment, which rather speaks for itself.
theonlykow - Fuck reading up the ass. The only thing it's good for is being a NERD. And being GAY. GOD.

It's still relatively small, but I think it has the potential to get huge pretty quickly.

The wank is fine but dear God girl, no one cares that this is your first post. The post will get judged on whether it is good or not and proclaiming your uncertainty in it is hardly going to soften anyone.

That's the sort of response one might make in a regular community, but this is Fandom Wank! We eat our own! We bitch and snark and are labeled as the purest evil (whilst being secretly read) by half of fandom! It's kind of futile even saying this because you'll hardly make first post again, but to anyone else for future reference please: no.

As a person with glasses and braces who also happens to like Harry Potter, I am insulted.

Who honestly says "im actually pretty hot & i have a lot of friends and have no glasses or braces" in an attempt to justify themself and expects to be taken seriously? Do they really think that makes them a better person?

The funniest thing is that no one on "Oh no they didn't" bothers about whether the article is true.

The Vatican does not care about Harry Potter.

No, seriously.

John Paul II did *not* praise JKR for her Christian lifestyle. He was not a big fan of the books. I doubt he's read them.

What happened is that at some press conference on a document released by one of the Vatican departments on the occult, an English priest at the Vatican indicated that he liked HP. Now, as much as any other Catholic, I like to throw this guy's quote in nutso Catholics' faces, but this doesn't mean PopeJPII was a regular surfer registrated over at Fiction Alley.

Similarly, Ratzinger doesn't care either. If this guy is credible, someone sent his office a book with a letter, and the office sent a polite letter back thanking him for it, using the guy's description of his book to write the letter. I bet the next week someone sent a letter with their book showing how Harry Potter is an allegory of Christian life, and I'm sure they got thanked too. The Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith tends to be more interested in... you know... *doctrine* than reading Harry Potter.

All these misconceptions come from an odd view of what the Vatican is. It's a lot of things, but one thing it certainly is, and people tend to forget, is a *bureacracy*.
