Religion and Politics Wank in Fanficrants
Fanficrants...it has it all these days.

The offending post in question

Wankiest Discussion So Far:
Are Catholics and Mormons really Christians?

Let this one simmer awhile and I'm sure it will deliver.

Yep, there's no wank. Just some miscommunication, which the OP seems happy to clear up when questioned.

If the OP used the term "Christian" for just the protestants then why not just call them Protestants?

I always want to smack people over the head that say "Catholics aren't Christians" and then calmly remind them that if there were no Catholics, there would be no Christians.

Unless there were no Christians until the 1500s.

Er, Orthodox Christianity would beg to differ on both points. But that's a debate about who's interpreting the teachings of Jesus more faithfully, and doesn't belong here.

(What happened in the 1500s?...)

No way the Catholic Church is the first. The oldest Christian Churches aren't the European ones, and they're certainly not Catholics.
The oldest Churches are in Asia Minor, the East and Egypt. I always laugh when Europeans discover they're among the recent ones converted to Christianism.

The Armenian Apostolic Church is the worlds oldest national church and one of the original churches, having been founded in 301.

Copts are pretty old too: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coptic_Christianity
"Coptic Orthodox Christianity is the indigenous form of Christianity that, according to tradition, the apostle Mark established in Egypt in the middle of the 1st century AD (approximately AD 60) (...) The Catechetical School of Alexandria is the oldest catechetical school in the world. Founded around 190 by the scholar Pantanaeus."

There's no wank there. I'm very happy to see that, unlike previous 'pre-emptive' wank reports, they didn't get a flood of trolls following the link and creating the wank, which quite frankly sucks.

Having lived in many different states (32 to be exact) I can tell you that in the South, Catholics and Eastern Orthodox Christians are systematically ostracized by the Protestant churches--especially Southern Baptists.

Since the OP is Southern, I'm not really surprised.

I HATE it when people make that mistake (and they do it all the freakin' time)! I know some people are all CATHOLICS =/= CHRISTIANS OMG because they're prejudiced jerks, but so so so many people online say the same thing without malice (only abject stupidity); I can only guess that they're trying to be PC (maybe because Catholics just aren't as cool to hate as Protestants?).

I'm suprised to see that it got posted here, considering that we behaved ourselves pretty well (especially considering how f_r can get! XD).

Catholics aren't christians?? that's news to me. I've been living a LIE!!!

Although the "christian" church confused the hell out of me when I ran into some of them at school
Me: what religion are you? I'm Catholic!
Them: I'm a Christian!
Me: Me too, but the next level down I'm Catholic. And you would be... Methodist, Lutheran, Baptist...?
Them: I'm a Christian!
Me: but... ow... but (and it continued for 10 min)

I think I love [info]aelf_en. Don't think I can get across enough how tiring it is to see Protestants scape-goated again as the hating idiot masses in fic/literature... Particularly in slash. Two boys kissing is like the bat beacon for Bible-thumpers. Villainizing Prots has seriously become the new vogue.

Too lazy to follow the link, though judging from the comments it wasn't wanky. I always thought Christian was a catch-all phrase. Like right now, my best friend who was raised Catholic dropped out from the Church, and though she still believes in God, she doesn't believe in any religion. She prays and whatnot, but doesn't attend Church, blah, blah, blah. So she identifies herself as Christian - a follower of Christ, but with no specific denomination.

Oh look, finally a religious matter both me (a monolatrist) and my mother (a Catholic) can agree on.

If you belive in Jesus as your personal savior, you're a Christain. Yes, even those eeevil Catholics are Christains. So are the crazier right-wing sects. If you believe the big JC is the son of God here to save your soul, you're a Christain.
