On the WoW forums, someone posts that they are creating a GLBT(friendly) guild. The members start wanking. "Why do you have to advertise it?" they say. "There's no sex in WoW!"

"You're missing the point," the poster and others try to explain. "We really want a place where we can mention our own sexuality and feel comfortable."

"But there's no sex in WoW!!!oneeleventy!1"

And, "You're corrupting the children!" plus "you're only doing it for attention!"

(Is WoW a fandom? I'm working on the assumption that it is, but if not I'll move this to otf_wank.)

But I'm sick of hearing people complain about other people using words like !@!@!% and gay in a derogatory manner. It's not going to change, the words at this point no longer refer to homosexual people. They are general terms for a negative or unfortunate thing. Language is a dynamic thing, it changes over time and words take new meanings (just look at the Oxford Unabridged Dictionary!).

Wow. You're right. Words change and take on new meanings, and therefore it's impossible that people will ever stop using "gay" or "faggot" as insulting terms. Great argument, guy.

Actually, it's kinda funny...In the human realms, you can see kids running around, but with any other race, there are no kids! So there's no baby orcs, trolls, dwarves, gnomes, or undead. I wish there were baby undead though. That would be great. Dead babies crawling around ready to eat you.

Oh jeez. I'm surprised this hasn't come up in City of Heroes yet, with all the 'family'-friendly SGs there. Or if it has, I've not seen it.

(then again, I had to ask before I learned what 'family' meant in that context.)

I am in something similar - a fashion guild tho - and well...I understand the need for such.
Really, in a game filled with teenage males... *cough*

Tell that to the stupid Night Elf guy who kept doing the dirty disco dance and taking off all his clothes. Then started demanding that we pay him. On the public chat.

It made me sad that I was a Night Elf. Why do all the newbs go to the Alliance?

I think most of the players are teenyboppers, based on the bad netspeak I kept seeing tossed around. Except for maybe Feathermoon, but then I only played regularly on Shadowsong and Feathermoon so I could be mistaken.

Wait, you DON'T join guilds simply for money and uber shinies?

My God, I've got it all wrong...

Anyway, in our guild (which has none of the money or shinies, sadly :( ), we've got a few homosexuals, one of which being a very close friend of mine. He lets everyone know that he doesn't like disparaging talk like that, and they all complied. Course, our guild's average IQ is above room temperature.

I've got no opinion on whether this is a good idea or not. My first thought was "oh man, they're gonna get singled out in every raid they go on" [/nerdyWoWplayer]

This cracked me up, though:
1) do you feel uncomfortable chatting with homosexual players?

While that was not the wankiest thing I have ever read, it certainly seems to be beating off merrily for the second-place trophy.

11 Pages. Eleven. I just read through every post, although a few must have been bahleeted, and the thread was never locked. I am not even sure it was modded. The most amazing thing was when the OP came in somewhere around page 9 or 10 to remark on how the thread was still going, even though it was started back in February.

The best course of action is to distance homosexual terminology from these words. Unfortunately the burden of change lies on the minority group in these situations. For example: stop referring (assuming you do) to your subculture as gay. The best option is to take a new title that has no connection to current derogatory terms at all. This is something that needs to be, and is, finding support in homosexual political groups. Over time if a conscious effort is made to distance the community from the current derogative, the word "gay" will be used as much in popular culture to mean homosexual as it is to mean "joyous" currently.

What I really want to know, now, is whether anyone ever suggested to the Jewish community that they change their name. After all, "jewing" is part of the language, and apparently it is too much to ask of people that they maybe consider whether what they're saying has bigoted connotations.

Sometimes when Fandom Wank is slow, I just go and pick a thread at random.

Of course, when I'm actually playing the game I worship the /leave General Chat command. I like my MMORPG experience moron-free.
