I Happen To Believe In Wank BEFORE Marriage
This wank brought to you by an anonymous anonymouse, of Anonymous Wankers, Inc. (company motto: "We're Always Watching You"). Keep flying that unmarked flag, guys.

Over on the ever-reliable IMBD boards, the delightful Avanzander makes the following post regarding slushy period romance The Notebook.

This Movie Reinforces the Lie that Love = Sex

Brief highlights of his post include:

I did not have any respect for Allie. She has no dignity and just "gives herself away" to Noah without a second thought.

I...had no respect for Noah because a real man would have respect for a lady and would want to protect her (especially a 17 year old) and would know not to simply use her to satisfy his raging lust.

I guess my complaint is more or less a complaint I have with our society these days. Movies and the media constantly tell us that a man and a woman in a dating relationship cannot have true love without sex, which is simply untrue. I know plenty of couples who are madly in love with each other, yet they have sworn to respect one another and their love until marriage. Prudish? Maybe. Respectful and pure? Absolutely.

Whether this is wanky in and of itself I shall leave to saner wiser minds than mine to decide. The real fun, however, definitely begins with the replies:

champ23: I don't get your point... are you anti-sex? i think it's perfectly fine for people who are in love to have sex...

now if it was saying to have sex without love, then that would be different...

i don't think you can say Lon is blameless, we don't know enough about him...

please Lon was NOT the good guy... if anything Noah was the good guy in the movie...

while i agree i do think in general nice guys do finish last, that's true...

but NOT in the case of this movie... Noah was the NICE guy, not pretty rich spoiled boy Lon...

tophr: Hoo boy, where do I start?

Back when I was married, my wife was frigid. And let me tell you, brethren and sistren, that is a special kind of hell for a man, because the man has no honorable options. Then after four years of marriage, she divorced me, which definitely counts as a mixed blessing.

Would you buy a car without test-driving it? Of course not. I expect you'd test-drive that car as much as the salesman would let you. By the same token, I won't marry a woman again without plenty of sex with her _before_ marriage.

The fact is, well over half of American marriages end in divorce; given that, the vast majority of divorce filers are women; if you the man get divorced against, chances are excellent that the divorce judge will hit you with a nasty "bad husband" fine. So if you marry, odds run about forty percent that the only thing you may have from that marriage, ten years later, are a few bean-bag chairs and memories of sex with your wife. It would certainly suck to be you if that sex with your wife was awful!

And if you think that being a Christian will save your marriage, then next Sunday morning sit in with the thirty- and forty-something singles instead of your regular college-age Sunday School class, and ask these older singles how many are never married, how many are widowed, and how many are divorced. You'll find very few old maids/lifelong bachelors, and very few widow(er)s. Nope, the vast majority of the people in the thirtyish and fortyish singles in church are divorced, and I'm willing to bet that most of the time, their being Christian happened a long time before their getting divorced.

And by the way, sexuality is a natural part of human biology and human psychology, not something dirty. So enjoying sex with a single woman is not "disrespecting" her, it's just doing what comes naturally.

But if you still insist on marrying a virgin, tell the girl that you'll respect her virginity before the wedding, if she'll obey the Pauline command "Wives, submit yourselves to your husbands" after the wedding. If she refuses, she's not a young lady with high Christian standards, she's just a prude.

champ25 again: the way i see it is, it should be the couple's decision... yes its better to wait until marriage, that's ideal, but NOT realistic...

its WRONG when one partner pressures the other one to do it, when the other one wants to wait...

its WRONG when people just have casual sex with someone they don't love...

but in the case of the NOTEBOOK...

Allie and Noah BOTH wanted it and both were in love with each other, so i think its perfectly fine...

and Lon was an a-hole, and i'm glad she picked Noah the real good guy... if Allie slept with Lon now that would have been WRONG, since Allie did NOT love Lon... Lon was just her rebound guy...

...an honourable mention must go to Gorgeous George, for flagrant use of the phrase, 'tainted with the essence of their 1st lover.'
I hope he's up for adoption.

There's heaps more to enjoy, too.

n.b. I know nothing about this film, except that the IMDB summary includes the sentence fragment 'they are separated by Allie's parents who dissaprove of Noah's unwealthy family' [sic], and I watched some trailers in the interest of mockery studious research and I think it looks like unmitigated tripe.

This is more than vaguely creepy and WTF-ish. Comparing a wife to a car? Jeebus.

Word. And this is the same guy who claims that his wife was frigid. Far from me to suggest that their problems with sex may have had a connection with his creepiness- whoops, too late.

I dunno. I think of men the same way--wouldn't marry one who hadn't put out, as I wouldn't know what I'd be getting. And sexual incompatibility is as good a reason to make tracks as any other.

It's just an analogy, and a sound one. He's not saying the wife is a thing, because that's not the analogy. He's saying the process of deciding on a marriage and the process of deciding on a car are alike in that they both should involve being sure by "test-driving", i.e., trying out all important aspects to make sure it's a good fit.

You left out the best line of all:

I am definitely not anti-sex. From what I have heard, sex is a marvelous thing. *sporfles a lot*

From what I've heard, people who think that those who have sex before marriage have no self respect should think before they speak, otherwise they will make others laugh so much that they choke on their tea.

If there was one attitude that I wish would be shut down forever, is this 'women are tainted by sex' bullshit. Right, she has no respect for herself if she has sex. God forbid she actually, gasp, might WANT to have sex and might actually LIKE it on her OWN terms! Oh no!

Of course, you don't see this bullshit for men. The mere idea of a horny guy being disrespectful to himself is bloody ludicrious.

Hell for the woman, too. Twerp. Honorable options? I wonder if marriage or sex counseling was ever discussed or considered at all... No wonder he used a car analogy later. Odds are good he last saw his wife as she peeled rubber to get away from him. Vrrroom!

Yes, but... after marriage, they're going to have sex. So, yeah. There will be both love and sex. Unless they "respect" each other too much to actually do it, in which case they'll just end up another divorce statistic.

P.S. I don't know how true this is, but I heard that the part of the US with the highest divorce rate is the Bible Belt. Lowest divorce rate? New England. Booyaka.

Good grief. A woman is like a car, now.

This is funny because when I was in catechism, our priest explained to us that having sex before marriage was a big no-no. He said, I quote, "How would you feel on the wedding night if you discovered that your wife wasn't a virgin? It would be like buying a car you thought new, and then discovering it wasn't."

To both sides of the argument: screw you, and keep your stupid metaphors to yourself. You're both comparing women to objects to be "tried", so you're both equally stupid anyway.

Huh. Maybe these people didn't see the same movie I did. Allie and Noah were separated for seven years, and five or six had passed before Allie got together with Lon, so I don't think he qualifies as a rebound guy. And Lon was an asshole? If being rich equals assholiness, sure. But Allie was the one who cheated. I kept expecting the movie to give more of a reason for Allie to leave Lon for Noah, other than the animal attraction thing, but it didn't. I actually felt sorry for Lon. And for Noah, too, to be honest. He's the one who ended up with her screeching, indecisive ass.

So, yeah. Tripe. But I've seen worse.

I did not have any respect for Allie. She has no dignity and just "gives herself away" to Noah without a second thought.

I...had no respect for Noah because a real man would have respect for a lady and would want to protect her (especially a 17 year old) and would know not to simply use her to satisfy his raging lust.

Is this guy sure he saw 'The Notebook?' Because this bears little to no resemblence to the movie I watched flying home from California after Christmas last year, but I swear to God it was called 'The Notebook.'

So apparently the fact that Noah and Allie eventually married and had a happy life together, and he loved her enough that he stuck with her after she developed Alzheimer's, and they frickin' DIED in the same hospital bed wasn't a sign of their love? It was just two loathsome people who didn't care about anything but TEH SEXXOR taking advantage of each other?

Beam me up, Scotty, there's no intelligent life here.
