Wank challenge!
May one request a wank? (Not in that way, back off you. ;) Someone told me that Forever Knight fans (god, do they even still exist?) used to have marvelously wanky flamewars over the various cutesey names they came up with for their many splinter factions (again, that fandom was BIG ENOUGH for splinter factions?!). Amused by the thought of fen taking things WAY too seriously, I've been trying to find one but, alas, thus far I have failed. Can you succeed in my place? :)

PS: I think they had "mock wars" too, round-robin story-type thingies -- I'm not talking about those. I mean REAL vicious howling bitchfests about using the wrong label for the wrong sect. I've been told they existed. It's like hunting Bigfoot. *waves crappy b&w camera*

When I first got online, I was involved in both FK and XF. I would have said then that FK was the same size, or larger than, XF (it was much more active of a community, if you knew where to find it). After that, XF took off in mid-1996 and FK faded away.

Unfortunately, almost all of the name wars took place on privately run mailing lists, not the newsgroups. None of that is available, AFAIK.

What was also scary fun were the Xena/Gabby shippers in Herc/Xena fandom.

For some reason, they refused to call their stories slash, and had to call them "alt." Further, instead of writing AU's, if they were set in the future, they were titled "Uber."

I was in the fandom for two+ years and I still don't understand it.

I know. What was with that elitism? I never was in the Xena fandom, but at the time I was in the Treksmut world, a lot of people (including the moderators of the list) were really into Xena and you'd go to their personal pages and see "slash" and "femslash" (or f/fslash) on the Trek and other fandoms pages, and then "alt" on the Xena page. Took me ages to figure out what they meant by "alt", mainly because my brain was trying to figure out where the slash warning was. ^_^

The Xena/Gabby shippers were a very scary lot. LOL.

OTOH, the slashers were so few in number that different pairing lists were inevitabely made up of a lot of people you recognized from other lists. *shrug*

I have several friends who are long-term FK-ers and they've never mentioned anything about flamewars over the goddamn faction names. This may, of course, only mean that my friends are a discreet bunch.

The mock wars were long involved story/RP things in which they gleefully murdered each other.

And yes, it was a big fandom. Lots of zines, one of the first major online archives, and much real-life activity.

I wish I liked the damn show better, considering how much illustration I had to do for it, but the propensity for serial killers of lingerie models turned me off early.

Lacroix was the only reason to watch that show. *furtively shines NA badge* And Tracy. I liked Tracy.
