Reminded of this just earlier...
Oh hot damn, I have wankery of my very own to post rather than just sitting back and watching everyone else post. ^_^

A friend of mine found this little sweetie on the mediaminer.org forum and I thought that the FIRST thread she sent me was a doozy. (The first thread, for the record, got wanky after my friend mentioned that generally she didn't like incest pairings except in certain circumstances or the relation is no closer than first cousin- the subject was demented couples. She got ripped by some Trunks/Vegeta shippers. *rolls eyes*) The subject of this fun little wankery thread? "Attack of the Bad Cosplay!"

Harmless enough premise- find those who have really bad costumes- those who obviously don't care and have sloppy costumes or costumes that don't even LOOK like what they're supposed to be- but it started off badly. Someone posted a picture of a dark-haired girl in Sailor Venus's costume from the Sailor Moon musical (meaning the costume had a few differences from any of her anime costumes) and the comment about it was that it was bad costuming because she looked like REI in Sailor V's costume.

Their complaint had been that her HAIR wasn't blonde.

*gasp!* Oh heavens! Her hair isn't the right color! It's not the right length! Or style! Oh, look at this person in the Meilin costume! Even though the costume is really good, she has blonde hair! THAT'S JUST NOT RIGHT!

THAT was their definition of bad cosplay. Almost none of the costume they posted about were bad- the problem was that the person didn't look the part because of their hair color/length/style or that they were the wrong build. One guy had a nice Yamcha costume and they slammed him for being to skinny to be Yamcha.

The wankery, she hurts my brain.

Well, someone came in and tried to point out to these people (almost none of whom had actually cosplayed) that the costumes were good- that a person's body build or hair should not limit them to what characters they can cosplay as. She got ripped into, the wankers spouting rebuttles such as this: "I see none of these in here. If you don't look like someone, you don't. Trying to look like them only makes you look ridiculous like the people in these pics. From the people in these pics, the only one that looks _half_ like the original, is the Mei Ling one, BUT, her hairdo looks more like Sakura. Maybe she was trying for one of the artworks with Sakura using that outfit?" This, of course, only proved them to be wankers. No matter how many times this poor soul pointed out that they were being wankers and that wigs were expensive and many probably couldn't find them except at Halloween, the wankers wouldn't listen.

Finally, my friend (Becca Stareyes) stepped in to point this out as well, using clear, concise, and simple terms for them so that they could understand and she got chewed out by the moderator for RUINING the thread.

*grabs James and makes him dig a big hole to bury the wankers in* I swear, the stupidity of some people.

I have to thank [info]virago for reminding me about this bit of wankery- I'm sorry to say that I'm pretty certain one of the good cosplayers these little bints ripped into was him.

Aiee, the stupid hurts. Especially to a fellow cosplayer.

I'm cosplaying as Gon from Hunter x Hunter *points at icon* for a convention next weekend. I'm altering the costume a little - the actual costume is a bright green color. However, my skin tone looks CRAP in that shade of green, so I deepened it to a darker, more pine green. Am I still clearly recognizable as the character? Yes! I'm just working off of the nighttime animation color pallette, that's all. Sometimes people have very good reasons for not looking exactly like the characters.

Rar. Those people are frigging idiots.

I know. I hardly have the body to be cosplaying as just about anyone, much less Celena or Utena, but not only am I cosplaying as these characters, I'm making the friggin' costumes myself.

Gah. I just KNOW that one of these little twits are going to say something about how Celena is supposed to be this bony little thing. *kicks them*

You're making a costume from Utena? You have my eternal sympathy. My Nanami costume was probably the most expensive, irritating, ill-fitting, and difficult to make potato sack *ever*. Did it look good? Yep. Just tight and hard to do.

And, for the love of the gods... Haven't these morons ever seen Otaku no Video? Real Otaku don't *care* if they're not the right build to play a character, or if they wear glasses and the character doesn't - it's more about creating the *impression* you're that character and working from there. Although, I will admit that there is some pride in presenting a perfectly accurate costume, that's *not* what it's all about.

*L* I'm using Utena's movie costume- the neat racer pants one with the Chocolate hat? XD I figured that would be more comfortable... although she looks even more like a swizzle stick in the movie than in the series.

And speaking of the Utena movie... did you see the post where someone bitched that the cosplayer for Miki had obviously tumbled into a vat of dye and stained his jacket blue? Obviously this wanker hadn't seen the movie, where the Student Council members all wore jackets that matched their hair colours, unlike the series when it was only their trousers. Oi... If you're gong to bitch about inaccuracy, at least do enough research to know if it IS inaccurate or not!

I agree! Miki is one of my favourite SKU characters - he's one of the few that see Anthy as more of a person and less of an object, right from the start. I'll admit, I like the Utena series better than the Adolesence of Utena movie - but if I haven't seen a series in total (and that means any and all episodes, movies and OAVs) then I always post a disclaimer such as "This is not accurate as far as I know (and then I say what I've seen and not seen of the series)"

First rule of qualified criticism - know what you're talking about. Otherwise you're not qualified, and that turns your criticism into wanking.

Extras - Internet Options - Extended Tab - scroll down to 'Multimedia' - uncheck the 'show images' checkbox.

This is IE 6.0, and I'm translating from a German version, so the exact wording might differ.

Eheheh... well, I do admit that sometimes a few of us folks at TWS Support poke fun at "bad" cosplay when people are really, REALLY not like the characters they're dressed like, but often someone points out if a costume is actually good. ^^;

However, people disssing the cosplayer JUST because she had a different hair color? Dang, now that is seriously overboard.

Did the guy in the Lum costume scare anyone else? I mean DAMN I'm still not conviced it's a guy.

[It's rather depressing to find a man who looks better in a bikini than you do.]

Cosplay wank sets my teeth on edge. I wonder if these people realize that's it pretty damn impossible for even the most fit person to be a dead ringer for an anime character.

Considering the:

- HUGE eyes and abyssmally tiny mouth and nose
- impossible physical dimensions
- impossible-for-real-hair-to-imitate hairstyles
- fact that they're DRAWINGS

I would sincerely LOVE to see someone who looks JUST like an anime character in costume. Really.

These people are fulla crap. I bet they would look just as lame in those costumes and sure as hell wouldn't be able to take what they dish out.

I met a belldandy who just about did it- once. Ever. And belldandy is pretty close to human normal. I mean look at most of the char. Impossible to actually be. Though one year there was a gundam who's only problem was size. A little small. They'd probably have ripped him too. Look at him- he is SO not gundam sized.

Ah, cosplay wank. Gotta love it.

Of course, these people clearly have no idea what it's like to cosplay. Ever been to a Japanese convention like Comiket? The cosplayers very rarely dye their hair, let alone get a wig, and no one gets on THEIR cases for doing so. Hell, you have little Japanese girls with black hair dressing as big blond male characters, Pikachu, and a whole mess of characters you wouldn't think possible but they do it because it's FUN. Not because it's a high art or anything, which is what the wankers seem to think. So, these wankers are just depicting the depth of their ignorance. Hee.

(I will admit that I HAVE cosplayed before, as a 11 year old character with purple hair. Whilst I do regularly dye my hair, I am neither 11 or male. And man it was fun.)

XD Yeah, as Becca said, she frequently cosplays as a male character. She does it so well.

I wish I could've submitted a picture to these wankers of my friend Erato dressed up as Naga. She's built like Lina pretty much but was wearing a NAGA costume. It was great. She's known as the "naked girl" on campus here. Total urban legend as far as most are concerned.

Yeah, Japanese cosplayers are interesting.. it's pretty cool, actually. I watched the official Hunter x Hunter musical fansubbed once (yes, musical - think like the SeraMyu Sailor Moon musicals only, uh, not Sailor Moon). Even in a professional musical, several of the actors (actually the original voice cast playing their characters on stage) didn't wear wigs. So HAH on the wankers, because professionals do it 'wrong'. ;)

I'm also cosplaying as a 12 year old male here... and nope, not twelve, nor male.

Heh... well admittedly, I giggle about cosplayers who are REALLY not the right size/shape for a costume, but since I keep in mind that anime girls don't appear to actually have internal organs, I'd like to think that I'm more lenient than the wankers mentioned here.

I'd be pretty disgusted at seeing both an obviously unhealthily thin cosplayer in a miniskirt just as much as a corpulent cosplayer in the same kind of outfit.

What really gets to me is when I see pictures where there are people scowling at the camera. If you're going to take the effort to cosplay, it should be because you want to, not because your online friends will give you *hugz* and *LOL* at you.

Oh, I know that. It's just that I've seen cases where if anything, scowling would be dramatically out-of-character.

Come to think of it, seeing as it's summer and many of the more elaborate costumes are made with lots of foam rubber and have lots of layers, they could be just very uncomfortable.

they should *SEE* the file of Japanese male cosplayers who've filmed the Card Captor Sakura opening.

Granted, I was screaming with laughter when I saw it (mostly because they also sing the song themselves), but you have to admire them for doing it.

OK, misunderstanding. I had mentioned male Lum crossplayers to make a point, unbeknownst to me that someone would actually find one. ahem. I'm female and in no shape to wear bikinis. ;)

Full disclosure: I haven't cosplayed at conventions, but I've made/sold costumes to people who do, and have done fandom costumes for Halloween (we're mildly laughable if you're in the mood; the page is here [beware messed-up page design]. It was hella fun, though.) I am picky about what I do, but that's just a personal choice and I don't get all pissy about people who don't do things the way I do.

Sideline: I have had run-ins with catty cosplayers before (no pun intended). A friend of mine was bitched out on a message board by some twelve-year-old who was, essentially, sour about losing a competition to the guy and his friends. She pulled the purist card, the we're-using-a-more-obscure-anime-thus-we-rule card, the we-spent-more-money card - the wank was truly phenomenal. Finally, though, it came out that she was 12 (she also used this in her defense, like "You shouldn't be saying I'm rude because I'm 12!") and her mother had made everything.

Epic stuff. Unfortunately it was over a year ago, so not really wankable.

Anyway, although there are bad cosplayers out there and it is somewhat embarrassing to behold, I also have to say that I understand the concept of just going out there and having some goddamn fun. Far be it for me to invoke Snacky's Law, but these little twits really are acting very middle-schoolish and obnoxious.

Luckily somebody called them on it. Ahh.

V. Important Disclaimer: I've only seen a couple of 10-second avi clips from the SeraMyuu Musicals, so I could be making a mistake here. But I have seen pics on the web, and...

The craziest thing is - her fuku seemed to me to be the wrong colour. Maybe it was just a trick of the light, but I'm positive I saw a red skirt, and a purple bow in front with a red star in its centre - which is, indeed, Mars' fuku. Venus' fuku is supposed to be a reasonably bright orange with navy blue bows- the only bright orange thing in the whole fuku was the puffed sleeves (and that was wrong in any case - if it was Mars they should have been light red, Venus, light orange.) Plus the bow in the hair does indicate Venus.

So either it was a nicely-made Mars fuku with a minor mistake/trick of the light in photography, or a nicely-made Venus fuku with a MAJOR mistake. But they don't nail her for her inaccurate choice of colours in the costume itself - they nail her about her hair! Such... wankery.

Haven't seen the musical. I, however, recognize that wall behind that person (sad, isn't it?). There's a costume site I look at occassionally (rather expensive, but decent) and they have one of the two people who make these costumes model them- they have an ungodly large section devoted to Sailor Moon.

After looking at the site again, I discovered that the outfit in question is actually Eternal Sailor Venus. That's supposed to be an orange skirt I guess, but the lighting in the picture is off.
