Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy Fanwank
So, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy came out recently. Some people liked it. Some people didn't. But you can always count on the fans to be enraged...

Z.f.c did not like the movie. It seems they have been making this point constantly. Actually, in just about every post. Really. People get angry about this and tell z.f.c so.

Everyone knows the proper way to handle such a situation is to make a farewell cruel world thread announcing your departure. Woe.

EDIT: And z.f.c is back as a troll!

Some of it was tl; dr but I don't understand people nitpicking the script and whatnot. It was written by Douglas Adams for crying out loud with tweaks by ... someone who is currently not dead. YEESH! This kind of over-analyzing is exactly why I don't participate in fandom anymore.

I don't know-- Douglas Adams' word isn't necessarily the be all end all. He wanted Hugh Grant to play Arthur Dent -- and I disagree with that choice and am so relieved it didn't happen.

Likewise, even if he did write the script it is okay for fans not to like the movie-- they can disagree with Adams' version of the movie vrs. book as much as the next scriptwriter.

Although, saying those who like the movie aren't "true fans" is even more ironic because of Adams being one of the screenwriters.

I liked the movie but all it did was make me want to reread the books.

*misses Douglas Adams*

Okay that's what I was trying to say. or something similar - which I agree with.

But you're right, they don't have to like the movie. I guess the biggest thing for me is that Adams has said that there is no definitive "canon" for HHGG and some of the people are like "THIS IS WHAT IT SAYS ON PG XXX OF WHATEVERBOOK" :P I consider what Adams said to be the "canon" cause it's his world. :D

Totally. The HHGtG has SO many incarnations, aruging "canon" is pretty much pointless.

mine is back at my parents' house across the country (it is the huge all-books-in-one hardcover version) so I have to wait until I visit them to reread the Guide.

I thought it was Hugh Laurie. (Which I wouldn't have liked much.)

I'm thinking of building a giant robot Douglas Adams in my backyard.

It was Hugh Laurie, not Hugh Grant.

I would've taken the former. I guess.

If you build it, the Guide fans will come to your house and play krikkitmen...

Haven't read the wank (I don't, usually), but I wanted to wiegh in with my opinion of the movie.

I loved it. It was fantastic. The guy who played Ford was brilliant. The same with the guy who played Arthur. I didn't like Zaphode as much, and I didn't like Marvin's design, but really, two negatives out of the entire, brilliant movie? It was great! Funny! I loved the Factory Floor! And, the Vogons were wonderful.

My favorite part was 'So Long, and Thanks for all the Fish'. I LOVE that song! I thought the movie was very true to the radio and movie.

Oh, okay. That's a little disappointing...I was kind of hoping there was a new one, cause I'd be off to find torrents of it in a second. I can't believe anyone's comparing anything of value to that show.

They did a new radio performance, complete with Christian Slater for the BBC's Radio 4. There may be a download available on the BBC website (as they tend to make things available on there)

I'm the only person I know who didn't really like the opening song with the dolphins. It was cute, I guess, but not really funny, and I thought it went on too long.

As for the rest of the movie, I reserve my right to not be happy with everthing Douglas Adams has done and still call myself a fan. I thought there were great parts, but I also have a long list of complaints. I also doubt that Adams would be completely happy with the final version of the movie because of the way it runs jokes into the ground, something Adams was never guilty of, that I can remember. But I know he wrote lots of the stuff that I didn't like, and that doesn't change my opinion. If I don't like it, I don't like it. Can't be helped. Am I wanking?

Funny that I go to see the movie yesterday, and find a bit of wank involving it. Can't say I'm particularly surprised.

But, you know... instead of senselessly bashing the movie that many times, why doesn't the OP just reread the books or watch the TV series again or something? Oh wait - people can't react and whine about that.

Great. Now I'm wondering if there's going to be fanfic!wank involving this movie.

Oddly not surprised to find wank. Between this, Serenity, and Crystalwank II, I'm good for the week.

Overall, I liked the movie, and parts were truly amazing, but it didn't...overwhelm me. I enjoyed it, I don't resent plopping down my $10 for it, but I don't need to see it again. I think it was a litle too close to the books for me, if that makes sense. I seem to like the ones that recreate the "feel and overall plot" of the books without staying slavishly word for word (see also, Harry Potter).
