I know you wank to the Daily Show too...
This isn't really political but if it's better fit for [info]political_wank, please say so and I will move it.

It's been pretty quiet on LJ's The Daily Show community for a while now. Other than the usual and unanimous outrage over the Conservative/Right-Wing Transgression of the Week. Until carl_sagan posts an entry entitled: I am a big fan and no, I am not trying to start shit.... You know the God of wank has graced us with his presence.

A while ago, Jon Stewart made some less than endearing comments about the NASA's effort on Mars. Quote: "...spent hundreds of millions of dollars to discover something that we can get in the bathroom sink" and "Three billion dollars and they discovered dirt?”

People agree or disagree as they will. Some people are quick to note it's a joke. OP counters with "there are consequences."

Others decide their time is better spent debating how the millions/billions of dollars pumped into the space system can be used for health care and other social problems. The OP responds with: how dare they mock "the last humanistic endeavors this government still finances". He might want to check dictionary.com for the meaning of humanistic...

The best and longest comment thread is when courtney_beth and mysticfeline2 point out the fact the OP spelled Jon wrong. Dictionary.com links are thrown about. OP refuses to correct his misspelling in the post and as a TA at Cornell, he would "rather have a brilliant paper that misspells a name then a mediocre paper with perfect orthography applied to all names". Here I thought colleges liked to have both. Hear that? Forget proof-reading!

It's 141 comments and the OP continues to reply to every single comment.

Lesson to learn? Nothing's sacred. I knew there was a reason I liked that show.

.... ok, how the hell do I fit 'stop being from my alma mater and calling yourself after one of my role models, you're making my alma mater and my role models look stupid' on an icon?

I think your frog expresses just the type of contempt you're going for, anyway. (Squee cute little frog.)

Aw. I loved Cornell. And I loved Ithaca. Even if I did flunk out. (chemistry graduate student 1993-1995, "I survived the winter of '94")

*is all nostalgic now*

May I point out to the OP that, while I agree that intellectual brilliance does sometimes trump perfect orthography, his post contained neither?

If you find out, let me know. Half my mom's family went to Cornell, and my brother's graduating from there this May.

The OP needs to learn the statement "You can't have your cake and eat it, too."

How is he dissapointed? As much as I love Jon Stewart, it's not going to do shit for better or worse to the space program. He spent months and years mocking Bush, but Bush still got elected.

Aww, I'm so glad that my lovely little "Please spell his name correctly" comment started off the best and longest thread.

God bless this wank. ::pets it::

It was just an excuse to use the J-O-N icon. ;)

Your icon just won you extra points. ^o^d

Hey, it was the most unique thread in all of that. From the way I see it, arguing about it either way isn't going to do shit for anyone.

That was my favorite thread. You know, my professors seem to want good papers where everything is spelled correctly. Hmmm....guess I should've gone to Cornell.

Being without cable and having never seen the Daily Show, whenever I see "Jon Stewart" I end up thinking someone spelled "John" wrong.

Really. Now me damaged from comics.

I am sipping Japanese green tea, listening to the Brandenburg Concertos and petting the kitty on my lap. I am not so sure that I need calming down.

I really think a part of me just died from the wafts of pretentiousness.

If it makes you feel better, I think cats are immune to human pretension. Something to do with knowing they're better than us no matter what we delude ourselves into thinking. :-)

Gotta love how he specifically mentioned his tea was Japanese. Wouldn't want us to think it was heathen Western green tea, now would we? "Mmmm...I'm so cosmopolitan...*fapfapfap*"
