Veronica Mars, Warnings, and Slash ZOMG!
Some new wank about to explode over on [info]veronicamarsfic. The Mod makes a post requesting that people take better care in labelling their fics so that readers can avoid subjects they don't want to read about.

The WTFness immediately starts when co-mod [info]honeymink equates a simple slash warning with "providing a service to homophobics."

Enjoy.

This wank? Too much of the "?+statement" thing.

I'm just sick of all the fucking Logan/Veronica fic that's been posted over the past few weeks (and no, I will not use the cutesy pairing name "LoVe", because BLEARGH). Where the hell is my Logan/Weevil, dammit?

LoVe?

That makes me sicker than "Spuffy" did in terms of pairing cutseyness.

Okay, the very first time someone said "Neptune is for LoVers" I laughed. Because it was funny. That time has passed.

Besides, we all know it's all about the MacEronica.

I'm actually surprised there isn't more. I wandered onto the Pit of Voles earlier today and not only did I find a couple of decent fics, but I didn't notice any Logan/Weevil stuff. Did they ban slash or something while I wasn't looking?

ARGH! Somebody wanting a label for slash is no more a homophobe than somebody wanting a label for het is anti-breeders! It's called providing a courtesy so the reader doesn't waste their time reading things that they're not interested in!

I suppose I can kind-of sort-of see the logic of the co-mod since het labels weren't asked for and since it was under "warning" and not "label" but even still, there's less wanky ways of pointing that out.

In conclusion, the co-mod needs to stop being on my side because she's making my side look stupid.

Maybe I've been in fic too long, but I don't look at "warning" any different than I do "label." But maybe I haven't caught the hypersensitive-PCness bug. Or I've been watching too much Bill Maher. Or something.

And the confusion seems to be more with the threesome and triangle fics than single-pairing. If the pairing is listed as Duncan/Veronica/Logan, it's pretty obvious there's going to be het in it, so no "warning" is needed. But some may be confused as to whether it's a threesome or a triangle, which means the difference between slash and no slash.

I say just drop the word "warning" entirely and call everything a "label." No sense offending the incest, rape, and BDSM fans by calling their kinks offensive, either...

I don't have any problem with someone choosing that for their lifestyle

...

Am I the only one who's surprised nothing came of that statement? Usually there's "IT'S NOT A CHOICE!!!" wank erupting after comments like that.

I've wanked on that topic many times.

It annoys me when people like that second mod get the attitude that liking slash is synonymous with championing gay rights, especially because I know I've seen at least one girl turn up on f_w before (too lazy to look for links) who loved to see the pretty boys have sex in stories, but hated homosexuality irl. Reading porn /= civil rights activism! I can sympathize with wanting to justify the porn addiction, but let's not get carried away.

All the better porn/= activism. Could you imagine all the guys who do nothing but watch lesbian porn all day showing up at a march? Gahhh.

Ah, my sweet little fandom. It can wank so hard for one so young.

Labeling a fic as slash or anything else is just letting people who don't want to read that avoid it. Simple. No phobias or isms necessary.

I would love it so much if people would stop being idiots every time someone implies that perhaps they don't want to read slash. Especially since it's these same supposedly open-minded people who tend to have the ever-baffling "Ew, het!" attitude.

I'm a straight girl who happens to prefer my porn to be straight sex (and threesomes, the best of both worlds). OMG! I must be a homophobe! It couldn't just be that I have preferences just like every one else on the planet does, could it?

Nooooo, that's just not possible. How could I have forgotten that if you don't fetishize and salivate all over the boysex, you are an enemy of Teh Gay.

Hmmm. Went on a little rant there, didn't I?

WORD. I'm all about the het and femmeslash right now. HP fandom seems to LUV two men together but two women is considered "boring" for some reason. HP fandom is 90% women, mind you, lol.

Amen. I'm one of those difficult fannish-types that won't choose a side of the fence - I dare, you know, base my slash and/or het preferences on the *couple* rather than the genitalia. Apparently this makes me homophobic in some fandoms, and a voracious consumer of Teh Gay in others. I'm going to give myself an identity crisis, man! Part of me is scared of penises and the other is grabbing at them left and right!

Wait. That sounded odd.

A lot of these people also have an "Ew, Lesbos!" attitude. I remember at least one fanbrat who squeed about her HAWTBOYSEX but thought that femslash was "just wrong."

You really suggest that we provide a service for homophobics by labelling our own fic with a warning?

Why not? I mean, unless you *like* having people troll your shit because you don't label it. If anything, it's a service to *you*.

Maybe it's just me, but when I see Remus/Sirius as the pair in the fic and rated NC-17, I don't think the story will have them playing Old Maid in Grimmald Place. :\

Sometimes I'm not in the mood for slash, does that make me a phobe as well? :>

"providing a service to homophobics."

So...then...wait a minute. This means that, since I don't want to read Krycek/Mulder or House/Wilson, I'm afraid of teh_gay?

Man, my stash of Clark/Lex fic and I are...a bit taken aback. All this time, I didn't realize they both had dicks. OH MY GOD!
