Since we're in need of some fun wank, an IMDB thread wank. This is not my first wank, so don't fuck with me. :P

For those of you who've yet to see "The Day After Tomorrow,"it's a basic disaster flick based on the premise that the earth suddenly and catastrophically enters into a new Ice Age thanks to global warming. And make no mistake -- when I say suddenly, I mean before Letterman makes his first totally-unfunny joke tonight. As disaster flicks go, it's pretty farfetched, with New York City being swamped and civilizations being razed left and right by sudden natural disasters.

It's piss-poor science, but good fun. It's also something that would probably be kinda memorable if it happened. So naturally, someone has to ask over at the IMDB boards: Is it based on a true story?

Whether it's just a troll having some fun (my vote) or someone who needs to brush up on his history, the replies are enormously entertaining, ranging from the ranting Rage Against the Stupid to the tongue-in-cheek sarcasm.

Some break out the u so dum:

HAHAHAHA I seriously HOPE you're joking or this will confirm to me how a movie this stupid could make this much money. Al Gore would be proud of your scientific acumen. Jebus F-ing Christ.

while others have fun with it, as in my personal favorite:

Yes, of course it happened in the 80's. The year was 1985, I was sitting in my grade 4 class when suddenly a major cold front came in. My teacher immediately escorted us into the library where we burned books and survived on gum from underneath the tables. It looks like your friend the professor has one this round. I also wouldn't be arguing with him if he remembers the day the Muppets took Manhattan. Utter chaos from what I recall.

Some people try to talk reasonably:

I would worry about the sun going red giant in 5 billion years than this.

while others eschew reason for dadaism: Yes something mild like this happened in England Once, It is kwnow that if conveyor belt stops working England would be Ice frozen. And that's what happened once, everything got frozen bracause of the conveyor belt patialy turned off.

Independence Day, rotten brains, massive government conspiracies and organ donations all make appearance.

Shallow, but much more entertaining than endless metawank.

Pff! Everyone knows he's just a figurehead. The real, power behind the thrown is Miss Piggy!

And she rules not with an iron fist, but a crowbar...

and a hacksaw, which she conveniently keeps in her purse.

It is kwnow that if conveyor belt stops working England would be Ice frozen.

Having worked in several factories in England, with many conveyor belts - this is true. My mum, however, remembers the winter of '63 when some joker switched off the coffee machine - winter was a BITCH that year.

If this was based on a true story do you think they would publicize it? I don't. It would be quickly sweeped under the rug like Rosewell or the real crop circles( and not those the gov. shills make for the news cameras disinformation.)

You can count on something like this having happened. I don't even know if the Eastern seaboard of the US is still around? I didn't get into Harvard. Why? My scores were bad but still... It could be because Boston doesn't exist anymore due to this 150 degree below zero stuff from, as you say, 1985.

I think it did happen and anything you see to say it didn't, including any posts on this site, are from Big brother gov trying to keep you from rioting.

That is what I think. Now I am going to turn up the thermostat...

Hmm, has anyone been to the Eastern Sea Board since 1985?

Let's see... The sudden destruction of most of NYC (9/11? Didn't happen because the Two Towers were ALREADY destroyed in the '80s) alowed the Muppets to take over without much resistance. And now, with the help of the Cabel and the MIB, they secretely run the world. I must warn you all! THey are breaking down my door RIGHT NOW, TELL THE WORLD SO ALL MAY BE WARNE (&*)(*)(*)(*(09!O(

A friend of mine went to Boston for a long weekend with her husband, last year, and she showed me pictures she *claimed* were of Boston. BUT she also said it was really, really cold and snowed the whole time they were there, so I don't think that proves anything either way.

This is a very funny wank. Thing is, there WAS a mini-ice age between the mid-14th and the mid-19th centuries. :P

I highly doubt, though, it came and went as quickly as The Day After Tomorrow would have folks believe. Still, the fact that someone thought that this was based on true events as recent as the 1980's...well, I'd not be here for sure if that was the case. :P

Yeah, the Little Ice Age. Where it took about 50 years for the temperature to drop, and the average drop was about -1*C (It doesn't sound like much does it? It is.), causing crop failure, a shortening of the growing period by about 4 weeks, stunted growth in trees, frozen rivers, various epidemics and a variety of Death and DOOM (and when the 17th C had that rash of big volcanic erruptions, things got even more unhappy). Unless my lecturers and the papers I've been reading have been lying to me (and I wouldn't put it past them, the sods) there were no frozen tidal waves, or Insta!changes. Alas, the planet tends not to work that way.

(I've an exam on this on Thursday. Fandom Wank! Combining half-assed revision and procrastination since about 3 minutes ago)
