BNFs declare "AU FICS ARE CRAP (EXCEPT FOR THE ONES I LIKE)!"
([info]snacky: A mouse at [info]wank_report contributes wank from the Alias fandom. All instances of "my friend says.." are from the mouse, not any friends of mine. Okay, on with the wank: )

It's just a baby wank right now, but it's so cute!

Over at SD-1.net, the Fanfiction Pet Peeves Thread has become a breeding ground for wank. One can rail against those authors they hate but if pressed say that they're just making generalizations.

It starts out sane, people posting peeves about poor grammar, formating, WIP's, BNFs getting too big for their brithces, etc. Enter Krisnreine, and Aliasscape, who for reasons unknown to me seems to have it out for one of their fellow fanfic writers. BACKGROUND: the fanfiction they dislike is Show Me Heaven by Luna-Moon--who is quite obviously not a native English speaker. Scrolling through the reviews, Krisnreine seems very supportive at first but something seems to have happened since she posted that review in June of 2004 (my friend who pointed this wank out to me tells me it has to do with to rival Lena Olin sites (an actress on Alias) who apparently have been duking it out for some time) The fanfiction in question is AU, where the characters remain the same, but the setting is changed, in this case to the US Civil War.

Aliasscape begins by saying "I'm realizing I really don't like fics that don't acknowledge canon at all. It's one thing to be AU, but I kinda like an AU to have some founding in the actual show." That comment is not wanky, however simonvsvaughn steps in and comments that they don't like AU much period, and then Aliasscape responds saying: "Otherwise I feel like it's not AU but the author's own story with the names of the Alias characters tossed in." Apparently her original post was slightly wankier, but has since been edited. A few more people start to talk about works in progress, and then Sidekick steps in.

S/he beings by saying "I dont see the problem with AU stories. AU stories take alot of imagination and creativity to write!! In order to write a AU you must be able to actually create things that no one else has used before. I like AU cause they are the stories that are actually original and creative and not generic like most." And then proceeds to talk about BNFs and their minions--and according to my friend the BNFs (which apparently includes Krisnreine) in the Alias Fandoms all have a Cassie Claire complex (although that is neither here nor there).

([info]snacky: Really, is there a wank in the world that can't be spiced up a bit with a mention of CC? Even if it's "neither here nor there"? Okay. No more editorial comments. *g*)

Krisnreine steps in saying: "it is NOT an AU fic if the characters bear a resemblance to their counterparts just because of a name. Or 'Well, in my fic Sydney is a spy for the North during the civil war, that makes her JUST LIKE SHOW SYDNEY.' Besides, if you're going to write an AU fic the least you can do is research, and I've seen some mind-boggling research errors." She then goes on to say "Fandom and ficdom *isn't* a popularity contest. Sometimes it may be a battleground between good and evil, but not a popularity contest."

Good and Evil? So I guess she thinks she's 'good' and Sidekick is 'evil' And here I thought the comparasion to middleschool was bad enough...

Cassie Claire, uber-famous BNF of the Harry Potter fandom. I'm not entirely sure of how the anon is defining Cassie Claire complex, but, I'd guess it had something to do with having masses of fawning fangirls who shower you with love, praise, and gifts, and leap to your defense at the slightest indication of a criticsim.

Oh, I know. But the anon in wank report tried so hard! Wrote the whole thing up, with all the links and background and everything! I had to give the mouse his moment in the spotlight.

Anonymous in the spotlight? That's got to be an oxymoron, right?

She* was just a young, invisible mouse from the wrong side of the sign-up process...he* was a wordly-wise cynical wanker, searching for a star...

Together, they fight crime!

No one ever went broke underestimating the intelligence of the average moviegoer.

It isn't?
