Very tiny wank
[info]sirius_denial complains about muse-chats in reviews and authornotes on ff.net. But people are more concerned with her spelling and grammar. Except [info]nattish, who "doesn't know why they feel the random need to point this stuff out. O_o".

Not a full-scale explosion, but all sides were being pretty bitchy about the whole thing. Spelling and grammar are important, but playing beta to everyone on a comm isn't necessary.

sirius_denial requested concrit in her reviews. They were simply complying with the request using the piece of writing they had to work with, in the theory that the writer might learn from it and not make such mistakes in her story writing.

o_O

Because God knows I'm always looking for people to beta my LJ posts...

I know. Posting on a forum isn't exactly the same as posting a fanfic or RPG post.

Considering Sirius was polite in her first reply and only seems to have gotten snippy after half a dozen comments, I think she's not the wanky one here.

Why should I do that? The dark side is hotter. I mean, has Vader, Maul and Christopher Lee! *distracts self with pr0n side instead*

So were the grammar nazis wankers the people who write those stupid scripts on their stories? Because I can't see any other reason they'd overreact like that to a few spelling and grammar errors. The original post wasn't perfect, but it was readable, which is more than I can say for 99.999999% of what I see on ff.net at any given time.

I was stupid enough to apply for [info]sorting_elite and have had mostly grammar critiques. I wrote in a hurry and I never proof-read, but it wasn't exactly txtspk. I think some people like to pat themselves on the back for the accuracy of their grammar because they have nothing to actually say (split infinitive omg!)

Methinks fanficrants is going against their own "no plagerizm (I do believe this was the spelling of choice?)" policy and blatantly copying us on the eating their own part.

Uch, gee, I don't know, it's family heritage, you know -- I mean, I inted to leave the glorious product of less than two minutes' worth for my grandchildren's grandchildren to hold and treasure...

A jest, to be sure -- if you want it, nick away! I've plenty of others to use.

SPELLING AND GRAMMAR IS SERIOUS BUSINESS!!!11!!!!

That said, you have to be pretty stupid (or drunk) to post an error-ridden entry to a community like fanficrants. Even I have a hard time restraining my mock reflex when people do that, and I think grammar nazism is stupid.

Actually, word has it that the OP has a disability which affects the overall quality of her written work. Not saying this is valid for all those who suffer from something similar, nor that it should somehow excuse her every error, but it does shed some light on the matter.

I think that makes it even more of a "duh" moment. If you have a problem with spelling, it makes even more sense to use spellcheck before jumping into the water. Otherwise you might as well coat yourself with chum and put on a seal costume.

[info]melange
2005-05-22 02:05 am UTC (link)
To be fair, most of her errors seemed to be homonym confusion, not misspellings and spellcheck can't tell you which versions of 'your' or 'there' to use.

That's true, but it would have caught "writting", "ideaology", and "thats". Dunno why she didn't at least try. At least then she could say she did.

No, basically is like the conversation with muses in author's notes except in the reviews.

Chibilurvstar: That was great!!!11! You love Kagome, ne Inu-Yasha?
Inu-Yasha: *blushes*
Darksorrowangstygothic: NUUUU! He loves me! *pounces Inu-Yasha*
Kagome: Baka! He's mine!!!!!!!1
Darksorrowangstygothic: *sticks tongue out*

Like that.

Never did, either on reviews, a/n or profile. But I have gotten some of those feedback myself, only in Hellsing fandom (since I don't write Inu-Yasha fic).

I can understand not liking the muse chats - aren't they against the TOS, anyway - but what's so terrible about a short author's note at the beginning of a chapter?

What I find amusing is the lost irony of it all. There's just something about bitching about muse chats in a post full of grammar errors. Heh.

For my part, I was just pointing things out because they were common errors, and since she was emphasizing (or so it seemed to me) that she disliked script-type reviews 'cause she wanted concrit, I thought she might like to know. (Well that and those mistakes just bug me, especially when in all caps.)

Maybe I overreacted, but I was just trying to help...? :\

You should have made another rant pointing that out if your intention was truly picking up common mistakes, otherwise it was obnoxious and not helpful (thought the other two were more wanky).

Script reviews are retarded, IMO, because they tell you even less than the 'rite mre plz LOLZ!' spam types and you spend quite the time trying to decipher what the inane ramblings between muses meant.
