Happy fun NIN wank
my 6 yr old son has been a fan of Nails since he was 3 (he seriously grew up listen'g to NIN since he was a baby-"The Fragile" 's chorus was the 1st song he sang) ... Is there any way to edit-out the curse words at home?? i don't want to just eleminate songs in all just cause they have a few bad words in them. and i really don't want my 6 yr old to be singing "i want to fuck you like an animal" on the playground. Original grammar and spelling intact.

Needles to say, there's plenty of "OMG YOU SUCK AT PARENTING!" along with a little "Let kids listen to what they want. I did and I turned out just fine!" support and, of course, the obligatory Beatles references.

I really need one of those "get out of my fandom, you are making my fandom look stupid" in regards to ringfinger.

Seriously, though...allowing a six year-old to listen to NIN? Fucked up.

Just out of curiosity, how many kids do you have?

My son pretty much listens to what I do, with a few exceptions. He understands that there are words not appropriate for children to say, and that songs are like stories in that they might talk about doing things that aren't actually things you should do in real life. His first favorite song was "Cowboy" by Kid Rock.

He's also a well-behaved, well-adjusted, and generally cool kid. And yes, he has, in fact, listened to NIN.

Personally, I think it's hypocritical of her to want to edit out the curse words but continue letting him listen to the songs themselves. There's a lot more to be concerned about, when judging whether a song is appropriate for your kid, than the language involved.

I don't send my four-year-old out of the room when I want to listen to NiN.

I don't think that's fucked up. They're just words.

She understands that there are words that some people don't like to use when they're being polite, and she doesn't repeat those words when playing with other kids, as far as I'm aware.

But she's allowed to use them when talking to me, if she wants. Which she hasn't seemed to yet.

I don't think it's wrong to let kids listen to a wide variety of music. Of course, I don't have kids yet but I'm the eldest sister and also the eldest cousin.

My little sister has been hearing Eminem since she was at least six because my other sister (oldest after me) liked him, and yet she doesn't start shouting death threats or swearing, mainly because my parents are near and always explained to her that there are some words that although not bad are not polite, and if my parents aren't near then I'm there, or my other two sisters (yes, even the one who hears Eminem) are there.

My little sister is a straight A's student who doesn't swear. So I say it depends.

I was raised, since the beginning of my life, on alt-rock and whatever else you want to call it. And, yeah, this included NIN. In fact, I had to be about 11 when the Downward Spiral came out, and my brother about 6.

One of our favourite family stories involves hearing 'Hurt' for the first time, ever. It came on the radio, my mother pulled over to the side of the road (in her red, Volvo station wagon plastered with stickers) and no one spoke for the entire time the song played. At all. Mom says the hairs stood up on the back of her neck, and I think they did for me, too.

And then it was over, and we waited about two more minutes before my mother shook her face a little, turned to me and said something like 'We just heard one of the best songs ever, I think.'

Downward Spiral had a constant place in the tape player from that moment on.

Yep, allowing your kid to listen to NIN is JUST LIKE MOLESTING THEM!!!
I also love the "NIN should never be listened to by small children for they are too young to comprehend and it will TOTALLY BLOW THEIR MINDS" stuff. Nine Inch Nails-- kind of like The Kabbalah in a way.

Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory is way more fucked up and terrifying than anything by NIN. I mean dude, the Oompah-Loompahs? Give you nightmares for weeks.

And now that they've remade it, with Johnny Depp doing his best to look like Michael Jackson after a three-day bender, the nightmares can only get worse.*

*Disclaimer: I adore Johnny. I do. But damn, he's freaky-looking in Charlie.

Yanno, there is so much shit a small child can be exposed to before the age of three that owuld make lyrics from NIN seem ridiculously tame. I feel sorry for those kids, but somehow I can't see getting worked up about letting a small child listen to NIN.

I think it all depends on the child and a good parent would be sensitive to what would upset the child and actually keep themselves open to questions a child might have about something. My five year old nephew totally enjoyed the Lord of the Rings, but the Harry Potter movies scared the bejeebies out of him. Go figure.

Kids are a lot smarter than folks give them credit for, I think what a parent needs to do is really pay attention, explain the confusing stuff and relax and enjoy kids discovering the world around them.

The only thing my parents controlled in my youth was what movies I saw. I was pretty much allowed to read and listen to whatever I liked as long as my parents know what it was I was reading and listening to. They clued in to how my imagination could run away with me when I saw some types of movies, so I wasn't allowed to watch certain ones. Smart move on their part. There was only ONE book I was absolutely not allowed to read (and when my mom did let me read it, it was with great apprehension). That book was Helter Skelter - I still can't read that book entirely.

Being a real young'n, I remember thinking that PG movies were worse than R movies. Because I could watch a lot of R movies without really understanding what was going on - not always the case with PG movies.

Same goes for NiN, I guess. Most of that would fly over a kid's head.

Wow. This sounds almost like the "3-year-old sees the word 'sex' in the animated sky of The Lion King and tells his mommy about it" story.

How do these kids actually understand some of these things they're hearing/reading about?

I can't exacly remember, but when I was 6, all I wanted to do was play with my Littlest Pet Shop toys and watch Saturday morning cartoons...

I have 3 children, ages 10, 5, & 3, and I do not let them listen to NIN, despite the fact that I very nearly worship Trent Reznor. I also do not let them listen to my Tori Amos, Ani DiFranco, etc. etc. While I won't mind letting them listen to it when they are a bit older, I think they're a tad too young for the subject matter of the songs. Right now they're totally into Hilary Duff, which I loathe but encourage, since she's squeaky clean. They were into Britney Spears, but I stopped that - they don't need to hear that crap (and I mean lyrically).

I believe it's up to every parent to decide what they allow their children to listen to, but on the flipside, for God's sake, what the fuck ever happened to common sense?

Joining the chorus of 'Let them be kids while they still can'. They'll be listening to adult music soon enough, what's wrong with putting up with a decade of listening to your kid play annoying music you hate? I'm not of the mind that rock music is harmful for a kid, but I don't see anything wrong with them listening to something aimed for specifically for them. I think I'd be a little depressed if I went somewhere and heard a four year old singing Papa Roach instead of The Hairbrush Song.

I don't know. I'm not a parent, but I think it's nice when parents and kids bond over music. Music is one of the few common interests my mom and I can share. One of my earliest memories is listening to Queen with her in the car. Heck, I'm named after her favourite Beatle song.

I hope my future kids enjoy the same music I do. I think I can share my They Might Be Giants CDs with them without fear of corrupting their young minds.

My son and I have almost the exact same musical tastes, from odd Moldovan ex-groups (O-zone anyone?) to J-pop and stuff like that...but I have to say, I wouldn't let him listen to anything I haven't screened beforehand to make sure there isn't anything questionable (in whatever language) on it. As far as I'm concerned, that is my duty as a parent. He's gonna learn it soon enough (and, I dare say, from ME LOL....) but why push it? He's only 7 (8 in a week or so *gasps*) and still fairly innocent as they go. Plus he's very sensitive so I doubt he'd like that sort of thing anyway.

There's time enough for kids to listen to that sort of stuff. However, 6 yrs old is NOT it.....

I don't think that kid's music should be censored; if they want to listen to it they should be able to. (Same for books, movies, etc.) I think if you've done your job as a parent then they'll be able to seperate reality from fiction and everything will be cool.

But the whole "if they want to listen to it" part of that is rather important to me. Let them choose to listen to NIN when they're old enough to have a preference. But when a kid is 6 they don't care what's on. They'll bob their little heads to just about anything. I'm not really sure you need to be exposing them to adult music at that point.

As I sit her listening to all my old 80's hair bands, and monster ballads (Warrant anyone? White Lion? Tell me I'm not alone in remembering them!), I understand the "He listens to what I listen to" argument. However, there is such a thing as self-restraint. There is just some music you don't listen to while the kids are around. (Certain Guns 'n' Roses and Skid Row songs come to mind. I'm old school. Hush.)

NIN happens to be one I don't think a 6yo needs to listen to. But then I'm not a fan of them. But going so far as to edit the songs? Dude... just don't listen to those songs! Logic! *le gasp!* Then again... that may be asking too much.

My mother inculcated in me her love of Herman's Hermits (a sort of low-rent Beatles), Rolf Harris (tie me kangaroo down, sport! tie me kangaroo down!) and bagpipes. Mostly played on big vinyl records on a big square record player the size of a freezer, and this was well into the 1990s.

We got to see Peter Noone of Herman's Hermits in concert just last year. He was playing a small-town casino and laughing at himself for being a has-been - siad he'd been booked from a website called www.Who'sStillAlive.com. Imitated Mick Jagger and led all his demure middle-aged fangirls in a rousing chorus of "I'm Henry the VIII I Am". Let's see Trent Reznor do that!

I must say, I find letting a six year old listen to NIN incredibly inappropriate. Still, I suppose a good parent (i.e., one who talks to their kid, explains things to them, and listens to the music with them, as opposed to one who just throws the CD at them) can make it okay. Still, the idea of anyone under thirteen listening to NIN creeps me out. I hate that our culture exposes kids to so many adult things. Now, I certainly don't think sealing kids off from the world till they're 18 is a good idea. But christ, when I was six I was watching Care Bears. If the kid asks questions or shows curiosity about adult subjects, by all means answer them! But there's really no need to throw explicit material at them, especially when they're not even a preteen yet. Ick.

Hm. I sound like a prude, don't I? Damn it! I'm way too young to be talking about how much better things were "in my day"! *headdesks*

I remember when "Baby Got Back" was popular. I was eight or nine and listened to it constantly because I liked the rythym of the words and the record scratching.

And I called my .ittle brother "prostitute" when he annoyed me. Good times.

Never actually understood what the song MEANT until I listened to it again recently. Got scolded for not knowing what a prostitute was but calling my brother one. Miraculously grew up relatively balanced.
