A very special tl;dr LOTRips wank
[info]oselle, an Elijah Wood fan writes "close to 5,000 words" on her feelings about the pint-sized B-star.

"We are drawn to Elijah because he is so beautiful, and he is beautiful because he is whole, as we should be, as we might someday be again. He is like the sun, or the full moon, whole and radiant and perfect. Ah, how he shines."

The comment responses to this post are wholly supportive

I hope he never understands fully just how powerful he is, as a man and as a legend, I hope he never loses his innocence, and I ain't talkin' about virginity here. I'm talking about his inner light. May it shine forever.
however, there is much behind-the-scenes mumbling in locked posts and after the first slightly negative comment is brushed off [info]esorlehcar decides to air her views.

Making a celebrity into a god isn't something I'll ever understand, but if it was making you happy, I'd say more power to you. You mention the tinhats, who, whatever else we may think of them, are deliriously happy with their little gay teddy bears and talk constantly about how knowing about them has enriched their lives. But in your case, your deification of Elijah seems to be making you miserable. You've set him on so high a pedestal that nothing else in the world can come close, and this has convinced you that the world is a terrible, terrible place. And that seems extraordinarily harmful to me. [*]

The two argue back and forth ending with [info]esorlehcar giving up and ranting in her LJ instead.

I'm simultaneously so sorry for this woman I could cry and fairly freaked out that deification on this huge a scale is being not only condoned but actually lauded. Fandom is an odd, odd, odd thing. [*]

Various commenters express their support of [info]esorlehcar but it's not long before [info]oselle pops up to comment in what must surely be an ironical fashion.

the fact that you would have enjoyed such a thing shows where your head was really at when you started commenting to my post. If you're going to wank someone, then at least be straightforward about it, for Christ's sake. Don't try to disguise it as heartfelt concern. That's just...creepy.[*]

[info]esorlehcar reveals she is posting under the influence of drugs whilst [info]oselle manages to misunderstand the word "wank" and accuse [info]esorlehcar of being a damn dirty rebulican.

you even included some handy hot-button "talking points" like "scary" and "violent." Boy, with skills like those you should be working for Fox News. [*]

Semantics are dabbled with and it just gets better as two more of [info]oselle's friends come to defend her honour.

Unfortunately (and hilariously!) they manage to apparently only skim the comments as [info]baylorsr first accuses [info]esorlehcar of something she refuted in her first comment and then of something which a completely different person said.

As I already told [info]oselle when she made the same claim, I was explaining a flip comment I made, not suggesting I thought she is "headed towards violence," which I actually end the comment by saying. And I didn't compare to her John Hinckley. [info]darkrosetiger, who made the comment you're referring to, didn't actually compare her to John Hinkley, either.

In a further fit of irony, [info]oselle writes a not-so nonspecific post extolling the virtues of humanity which stands to slight contrast with her repeated assertations that they were all "assholes" who were as broken, horrible, and utterly miserable as the world itself.

Actually, I wasn't scared until she started replying to esorlehcar. The original essay is certainly hyperbolic, and I can't share her perceptions of Wood, but she does explain that legends are founded on inadequate human grounds, and that it's the fans devotion to the legend that makes it, and the legend that's more important to the point of her post than any actual work or personality traits of the person who has been elevated to legend.

But, oddly, that's not what she said when originally told she should get therapy, and it's absolutely not what she says when she's wanking away in esorlehcar's lj. There she does look like the mad-eyed fanatic that esorlehcar thinks she is, and not like the self-aware and witty person her friends say she is.

Of course she could be both, at different times, just as it's not utterly incompatible to sometimes feel like the world is grey and sinful and sometimes that it's basically good with bad (if noticeable) patches. The red light to me is that she seems to ENJOY being pegged as someone who's miserable and only made more miserable by her adoration of Elijah. "Yes, yes, I AM miserable, I am depressed, regard my ineffable Weldschmertz!" is what got a little gesture-and-chuckle response from me.

And it all comes down to this -- what is wrong with believing the best of a person, especially when that's almost all you've ever seen of him? What is wrong with looking at this one person and really believing that he is essentially good?

"All you've ever seen of him"-because she's seen practically nothing of him really. Maybe she would be happier if she gave the people she knows in real life and sees every day the same benefit of the doubt-like those evil not whole people she works with.

In general, I actually do think putting people on such a high pedestal is a bad thing. Nobody could live up to what she makes Elijah out to be.

The problem with legend is that ugly old real life can intrude upon it with things that simply do not fit perfectly, and you know it when you see it.

Yeah that stupid old real life gets in the way of Perfect!Elijah. :\

That explains everything, then.

Though, I think Eso's approach was a bit off. [info]oselle is far past the point where the Gaysus worship is the problem - she needs a headcheck on aisle 9.

Also, teh crazeh was tl;dr. What is it with the Cult of Elijah and all its denominations and mile-long essays on how Elijah/Dom sticking his dick in Elijah's ass is a world event on par with the ascension of Christ?

That is seriously a different brand of fucked-up. I remember when I was twelve, it set in that John Lennon was dead and thus incapable of marrying me outside the Deep South. Just idealized silly girly heartache coming out of my ass and ears for days.

Which is why this girl needs a reality check. Elijah Wood probably eats quacking baby ducklings, or masturbates to the Discovery Channel, or something equally as off-putting. Because he was born into this species, and that's just how this shit goes.

The thing is, this reminds me of some recent incidents in my life... being a big fan of a now-split hugely popular Aussie rock band, I made a huge effort to see as many of their last shows as I could... with the result that the lead singer, on whom I had a big crush, and I got friendly... phone numbers were exchanged and time has been spent together...
A friend of mine from Canada, who had a similar but significantly more overwhelming crush on him, came over to see their very last show and ended up staying for a couple of weeks in which the lead singer also did a couple of solo gigs, so we all ended up hanging out...
Now, naturally, we'd both idealised this guy in our heads to some extent and naturally spending actual time with the *person* rather than the rock star was educational... with the result that he's become more human to me... for which I'm grateful, I like being able to see him for who he is and consequently, crush aside, I actually like and appreciate him more now.
Wheras for my friend, he became even more godlike... the virtues he possessed which she extolled became even more exaggerated, he has become a more perfect and idolised being... even when he's badly behaved or makes a mistake it's explained away because he's this wonderful, shining being who can do no wrong.
My friend is a wonderful and lovely person, but she definitely has a very naieve and rosy view of this man - who IS a genuinely lovely, generous, considerate and kind person - but who also happens to be manic-depressive with a drug and alcohol problem and I don't feel comfortable revealing anymore but you know what I mean - he's human, he's a guy, he has faults and weaknesses and I feel like I've come to appreciate him more for this wheras she has even turned his faults into virtues.

I'm mentioning this because I think it demonstrates that often, our perception of celebrity is a result of the sort of person we are and what we actually rely on the celebrity for... what we perceive them as bringing to our lives.

As for the beautiful tidbit... for fuck's sake, he's not THAT "beautiful". I mean, he's cute, but I can't get past that most of the time in LotR, Elijah looked like a minor.
