It's funny that the ranters are complaining about how rabid otaku think Japanese is OMG TEH SACRED LANGUAGE. Because by acting like every little informality non-native-speakers take with it is grounds for execution, they're pretty much showing that they think the same way.

Okay. I haven't dabbled in anime since I stopped watching Sailor Moon some years ago, and I took Latin, not Japanese (dead language pride!). So someone help me out: what the fuck do -chan, -sama, and -san stand for? I haven't got a freakin' clue.

I totally agree with that guy. Like for all those people with Sindarin or Quenya nicknames, SO WRONG. If you aren't really Eldar, you shouldn't be using their language. EVAR. Or at least chop your ears to make them pointy to show your true devotion to your nickname's cause.

Sure, my email is a butchered version of how my name would be said in Japanese (Emeirii, but that's incorrect, Emiri or Emeri is probably closer to Emily), and sure, I also use Eko (E-ko), but those are nicknames from when I was in high school and now I'm too used to them to change them.

I've never called myself Emily-chan or anything, though. No chans for me!

my boyfriend's last name is Chan. (mmm.. asian boys..) my dad accused me of only dating him to make "Heddy-chan" official.

but I go by Heddy-chaa more than Heddy-chan, now. Heddy-chaa being a personal nickname derived from a typo back when my friends did call me Heddy-chan in junior high

I would agree with the guy on most terms, because I hate when people use japanese suffixs just to sound cool or cute. Anyhow, good luck with Japanese laughing at foriegners using their language!

I know I wouldn't be caught dead saying things about my favorite musicians or singers like, Rundgren-sensei(no!), Ponty-sensei(NO!), Springsteen-sensei(NO!)

Either way, if like using it, whatever.

My fandom friends used to call me Minako-chan out of endearment, and I just allowed to do so because I didn't really care.

But that was years ago. I think I'm growing kind of bitter to all that cutesy stuff, now that I'm WAY older. 'Sides, some of the people doing so were actually *younger* than me.

So, now, it's just Maria for you. Simple And Sweet, Thank You Very Much.
