Anime convention and cosplay wank
OK, yes, I'm a mouse who's borrowed an account from [info]house_of_mouse, but this is the first time that one of my boards has exploded into wank and I thought it was odd enough to share with the world.

FanimeCon bills itself as "For fans, by fans," which can be a recipe for disaster. There were lots of problems at FanimeCon 2005. People started complaining. The staff decided to not listen to the complaints. The complainers got angry. And then there was ridiculousness.

The real craziness is in this thread, Incredibly upset with Fanime this year, as well as in ConOps = The Discriminating Tyrants of Fanime, FANIME RATING, and Der Cosplay Suggestions. There's also assorted wankage sprinkled in other threads, but those tend to be little snippets not worth bothering with.

Over here, all the cons are run by local anime clubs, which are made up of fans.

Who normally runs cons in the states? Big Brother?

Big Brother would probably be more efficient than the Fanime staff.

am one of the original members of Cosplay Hell, and I would just like to agree with what Astro said. I was so dissapointed with the entire convention that I left in tears. I'd been looking foreward to this for over a year. I friggin' failed the 9th grade just to attend. And this is what I get in return?

If it weren't for my horse...

They failed a grade for a friggin' con? Who the hell does that? Whose parents let them do that?

Not only is it what you get in return, it is what you deserve.

Really, anyone who thinks con > ninth grade NEEDS to flunk, like, until they get their goddamn priorities straight.

Someone goes to a nerd convention for dignity? That's a new one.

I first read FanimeCon as FamineCon and was amazed there were enough Four Horsemen fans for a convention.

On the other hand, I much enjoyed the ConCom person who was in arms at the notion that attendees expected the staff to SCHEDULE panels. Um, I would too. Making up panel topics, staffing panels, preparing for panels, making sure you know exactly what equipment you need for panels and bringing the equipment the hotel won't provide but will permit--that's the fans' job. Scheduling the panels is the ORGANIZERS' job.

Yes, I liked that you have to apply for the privledge of running a panel, like IT'S A JOB, and email everyone in sight, and email them again, and if they don't get back to you, it means you don't want the panel bad enough! You don't deserve the panel! You must sweat and bleed for the panel!

The "loner" guy in the argument on the weapons policy needs some tranquilizers, stat.

My first instinct, looking at this, is to side with the staff, but that's probably just because I'm on staff at a con and I know what a headache a lot of things are. The weapon policy, especially--a lot of people complain and don't seem to realize that there are serious liability issues involved, and the con has to cover their ass and cover it well.

I'm sure the con did have plenty of issues that the staff needs to work on fixing, but I can quite understand the temptation to tell people to shut up and join staff themselves if they think it sucks so much.

I actually went to Fanime and, while the staff was (for the most part) trying their hardest, it really was the least organized con I or any of my friends had ever been to.

The thing is, pretty much everything that went wrong had been asked about on the boards months in advance, and everyone was assured that yes, everything would be fine, and please stop pressuring the staff.

It wouldn't be such a big deal if it were a free event, but Fanime does charge...

That said, some of these people complaining don't have legs to stand on. Failing a grade? What in world was she expecting from the con?

Having been on concoms in the past (meaning the olden days of fan run cons), I too can appreciate what the staff had to go through, but at the same time, some of those staffers are a little too defensive on the comments they're getting on the cons of the con. :P (What I find funny are the defensive stances a few staffers are taking on the thread about the pros and cons of the con - they're INVITING critiques and then promptly disregarding them with what I see as fairly lame excuses for the most part).

And the excuses are bordering on funny.

And given that those that attended actually paid to get in, I hardly think their opinions should be greeted with a "Shut up, you don't know anything and if you think we did such a shitty job, YOU be on the staff next year and see if you can do better."

Okay, granted some of the critiques were rather rude, but still I do think there's some constructive criticism going on there that these guys can learn from.

The one thing that bothered me was the person who wrote in 4 months in advance about a panel, then didn't get a reply, then being told that all the emails were sent out etc. etc.....that just shows poor organisation. The whole explanation of how the panels were supposed to be done just seems wrong to me. As jat_sapphire mentioned, it's their JOB (the organisers) to do the panels, not the attendees. Geez.

However, you're all so right about the person who supposedly failed 9th grade for this. I would say that the person failed for other reasons, as if they had time for this cosplay stuff (I'm not a cosplayer but I have friends who are and even they don't have to do that much apart from making their costumes) then they had time to study and obviously spent that time doing something else.

*sighs* And ppl wonder why things are how they are....

Peer pressure, quite honestly. Someone else had reported this over there, and then about seven people tried to talk me into loaning and posting, and I am afraid that I just caved in. So sorry.

As has been mentioned numerous times, the Fanime ConOps depend on people who say they are going to show to be there when they say they will. Without that, Fanime would fall apart very quickly.

As this Fanime proved quite nicely.

ConOps = The Discriminating Tyrants of Fanime:

I understand the need to tag certain props like bokkens, shinais and other items such as firearm weapon replicas, but why bother tagging a dog toy, such as a harmless little STUFFED FISH?

That's kind of funny. Last year I ran around with a bokken one day and a fake semi-automatic (borrowed from a friend) the next, neither of which were tagged. Of course, the fake semi-automatic had a plastic orange tip that gave it away, but... still. While I was there I asked someone what the plastic thing on their weapon was, and they said "a tag." And I'm like "...uh...." And they're like "You're supposed to check in your fake weapons and get a tag for them."

And then I laughed and said the equivalent of "Yeah, sure, screw that."
