wee cute fanfiction rant
(From [info]wank_report, and I know nothing about the fandom but some things are universal.)

A fanfic is posted on a community dedicated to some anime pairing or other. It contains gay pr0n and a lot of descriptions like 'Pondering violet found playful emerald' and 'Satiated violet found burning emerald'.

Nobody has a problem with the gay pr0n, but a few people take exception to the writing.

The first thread is actually fairly cordial, if long-winded. We do learn that the author has 'a very stylist way of writing.'

The second thread, which continues here, heats up a bit, especially when chaosd jumps back in:

Violet eyes opened and shifted between seas of emerald.
It's very good you included this sentence in your example, as everything else in the two paras pales before it. I'll try to explain, being honest.

Sane reader's reaction would be between "disregarding" and "grabbing for an ice pack", depending on the overall fic quality and number of times the ficauthor brought it up before. Because over the years anime!fandomness exists, this turn of language's been used for everything, floor-wiping included. It's been parodied so much that a sufficiently uncaffeinated author out of his/her pre-teens won't ever think of using it in a somewhat serious piece.

And the author explains herself, sort of:

There were three words I could think of (granted, I didn't go searching through a theasaurus or anything): purple, violet, and amethyst. I picked violet. The reasons for this are:

1) Purple is not technically a color. It is not in the spectrum. I, personally, do not like the word purple. It reminds me of bruises.

2) One of the defintions of purple is "marked by profanity" not a place I wanted to go.

3) Amethyst -- that gives the wrong connection to "emerald". I didn't want to do the gem thing.

4) Violet is in the spectrum; thus, it is in the rainbow.

5) Violet is a type of flower.

6) Violet connects the two ways Hakkai (in this fic) sees Sanzo's eyes. As part of the rainbow and as wet wildflowers.

The author actually manages to keep things fairly civil, but don't worry, her 'friends' jump in to inform everybody that everybody critiquing the story is just jealous, and also that she has more fangirls than the other people and therefore is right.

Small and cute, like a tempest in a (violet) teacup.

I'm sure I could think of snarky things to say but I'm still boggling over Purple is not technically a color.

I too went to convention and also met fangirls of Cupnjava, may I mention they were RABID fangirls, complete with squealing, screeching, and the required "OH MY GOD!!! CUPNJAVA IS AMAZING!!" yells. Somehow I highly doubt Chaosd is privilaged to such a fan base.

Because naturally, the size of one's fanbase equals how good their writing is. That's why there aren't any Anne Rice fangirls...wait. Never mind then. I'll just be over here rolling my chocolate eyes (brown is not in the spectrum and thus not a color).

See, I actually researched this, just because I thought I'd heard it before and was confused. Purple isn't a colour because, for example, when we see green, it's not a mixture of blue and yellow, it's actually green light. Pure purple light does not exist; it is always a mixture of other colours.

Violet is just a very dark blue and has absolutely no red in it.

A color wheel that shows purple or magenta very clearly midway between red and blue is not representative of frequencies of light, it is designed to show what think we see. The frequencies of light end as red and blue get darker, but never loop around to form a wheel.

Violet eyes opened and shifted between seas of emerald.

Assuming the "emerald" reference is to the other character's eyes again... all I could picture was one emerald eye in *this* corner and the other across the room in *that* corner.

Somehow I don't think that was the author's intention...

Ah, another instance in which the author is perfectly calm, but her friends get all pissy...I wonder, how do the authors feel about this kind of thing anyway, seeing their friends kick up a storm in their defense? *random curiousity*

While I understand the, um, reasoning behind her saying purple isn't a color, that's an incredibly pretentious and bullshit reason not to use it. Does she not use other non-colors?

See, this is the product of adults telling first graders that everyone who insults/questions them is "just jealous". Let's bring back old school bitchslaps to little kids that complain!

But seriously. Saying purple isn't a color? I think that, if she's going to go by that logic, she shouldn't use violet, either. After all, it's just wicked dark blue. So call them wicked dark blue!

The killer for me: The whole 'eyes are important' speech. Please tell me I am not the only one that cannot 'read eyes' unless the person in question is crying.

Really, if one's evilness showed in the eyes, life would be easier for many and way more difficult for some.

tips of white teeth teased violet eyes

Am I the only one who pictured these teeth nibbling on the actual eyeball?

This girl's imagery borders on disturbing.

Am I right that the author's defense #6 implies that Hakkai is the POV character? (I can't bear to read the fic, based on the quotes here.) So, um, Hakkai thinks of his OWN eyes as satiated emeralds, etc?

Because that's so wrong.

Gah... It's like Gundam Wing and Saiyuki badfic met and had a horrible baby together. I kept expecting Sanzo to turn up with a waist-length braid and 'elfin' features to go with those amethyst orbs of his.

Okay, so... cupnjava's fic = not impressive. But I'm going to have to take issue with chaosd on one point:

The only trouble you might have with 838 specifically, is that yes, we do have slightly higher percentage of good fics written for the subfandom

We do? Where? ... *head in hands*
