How do you say "lol @ you taking internet for real" in Shanghainese?
On Metafilter, Trik posts about the sentencing of a Chinese gamer who murdered another guy over an mmog "cyber-weapon":
Death sentence for online gamer SHANGHAI: A Shanghai online gamer who murdered another player because of a dispute over a "cyber-weapon" was given the death sentence with a two-year reprieve yesterday at Shanghai No 2 Intermediate People's Court. Qiu Chengwei's death penalty will be commuted to life in prison if he behaves well in jail, and no other crimes relating to him are uncovered.

Not to condone the murder, but is cyber theft or isn't it? Acording to the DMCA if I download a song or movie from cyberspace I am commiting a crime. Yet if someone steals your item in a cyberworld and sells it for real world cash your left without recourse. I feel China had a chance to establish new law and balked.
MetaFilter is confused. "Does Trik want us to sympathize with the guy who killed someone else OVER AN ONLINE GAME?" they ask. In several tl;dr comments, Trik explains that this is exactly what he wants. Snark happens.

Edit: Trik swims farther out towards the deep end! Now someone selling your cyber-sword is like rape:
There are people living in societies today, where say you have a family of a father, mother, son, daughter.
Some asshole rapes and brutalizes either or both the mother or sister / daughter.
Unable to live with the shame that the mother and or sister / daughter has brought upon them, the father and or son / brother, will murder their mother and or sister / daughter.
Whereas in my culture / society the sonofabitch that hurt my mother and or sister better pray the cops get him before I do. And no one will ever hurt them again.

I wouldn't victimize the victim again.

I think that guy felt like he'd been victimize 3x.

It is kinda cute how the internet is made up of imaginary people and fake computer-created entertainment right up until it's a corporation's fake computer-created entertainment.

And I see that point going waaaaaay over their heads as they argue about the murder aspect, yay.

Also:

If someone's.

Format.

In posting.

Comments.

Drives me.

Insane.

Are they liable.

For prosecution.

And if not.

Can I.

Kill them?

This from the hyphen-king?

Should I make an icon or am I the only one terribly amused by that?

That was the funniest part of the whole thing for me (except for the Captain Kirk part). Definitely icon worthy.

On the one hand, I can see his point vaguely in that, yes, if someone steals something from you in cyberworld then there should be some sort of cyberpolice to deal with it.

In a perfect world, that is. Not one based in reality.

But sympathizing with the guy? Are we supposed to sympathize with someone who does the real life equivalent? What?

Crazy, crazy people.

Even though I'm not a gamer, I can see how it would suck if some loser traded in your time and effort for cash. It'd be nice if there was a practical, fair way to deal with it. The way Trik brought it up was bizarre, though, and he just kept getting stupider throughout the thread.

Love the wank, bit of a shame though as it is actually a fairly interesting topic, but no way am I wading in there now.

Trik has totally lost it, which I love: in response to a reply that "talking in stanzas doesn't make you an oracle" (hee!) he goes:

absalom: isn't there a bridge you should be living under?

btw, love the knuckle-walk

you go girl!

Guy A and B appear on Judge Judy weekdays at five. Check your local listings.

I prefer Jude Marion of People's Court to Judge Judy. Marion has a hotter bailiff for one, and a great sense of humor, as well as a better makeup artist.

But yeah, there is a lot of Guy A and Guy B type stuff... :\

Forget the whole murdering over stealing something in an online game. Who pays $871 for an online game weapon? And how much time does it take to earn one of these? I see a possibly profitable hobby - as long as I refrain from stealing from anyone and getting killed, of course.

Qiu Chengwei, 41, jointly won a "cyber-weapon," called Dragon Sabre, with another player, Li Yongwei, last February in a popular online game, Legend of Mir III.

Qiu loaned it to Zhu who then sold it for 7,200 yuan (US$871).

Qiu found out and went to the police, but was told the weapon did not count as real property that could be protected by law.

When he failed to get satisfaction, he stabbed Zhu in the chest, hitting the latter's heart and left lung, causing him to die immediately. Qiu then left and turned himself in to the police two hours later.

See, folks? INTERNET IS SERIOUS BUSINESS.

555@iRO. I was deceived by RO's cute game design and its happy fluffy pointlessness into thinking most of RO players would be happy fluffy bunnies who just wanted to level and chat and have fun instead of sore wankers with +10 Double Bloody Swordmace high up their asses.

I think, at least. I'm more familiar with Haimenese than Shanghaiese, but they're both about the same.

Still, I laughed. Those Chinese gamers are hardcore. I tried to open the window shade in a Shanghai net bar once and almost had my head snapped off due to OMG RUINING THEIR GAME WITH THE GLARE!!!!1 =O =O =O As if they even could see through the cigarette smoke.
