Posting this at the request of a friend without a JF account...

What's the best way for a stalker to get near a celebrity in the Buffy fandom? Easy: run your own convention!

So someone starts an anonymous LiveJournal (con_dom_wank) and claims:

This Editorial LJ was created so that there would be an open forum available for dialogue opportunity. A number of people have felt over the years that it was important for members of the Fandom of Whedonverse to be able to share the information we've accumulated about our experiences--the good AND bad!

It then posts snarky reviews of upcoming conventions, and a few anonymous folks come out of the woodwork to bitch about negative convention experiences. But then con_dom_wank posts an entry on the upcoming Alternate Universe Convention, and wank explodes. 271 posts and counting, and it seems that damn near everyone who's ever attended a Whedonverse convention has dropped by fan the flames.

	Pff, those people are obviously copying from the LotR fandom. The 'organizing a con, stealing the money, and running' thing is so 2003. ...unless VB and OB have broken into the Buffy fandom. shifty eyed look (Reply to this)(Parent)

I don't get this whole combining of years of experience crap. Twenty people working one year each at Blockbuster does not equal one person working twenty years producing movies.

On a related note, I once told my dad that his legs had seen a century's worth of walking combined. He wasn't too happy.

	I was personally amused by their collective nine years in fandom. I have that much fandom experience all bby my lonesome, and I'm still not about to claim that qualifies me to organise anything more than a get-together over coffee with local fans. (Reply to this)(Parent)

	An anon couldn't have posted it in any case... only community members (i.e. people with accounts) can post. And wank_report exists so anons can report things in the comments. (Reply to this)(Parent)(Thread)

No, I meant that if you look at the content of the wank itself, most of the action is coming from anonymous posters.

It is my contention that this community used to be a hell of a lot more interesting when anon commenting was allowed. The thing that makes a community like this flourish is when it not only reports wank, but perpetuates it. F_w lost a lot of its particular zing when it took away the ability for people to anonymously snark at each other.

IMHO, of course.
