To An Author I've Slighted
Dear Anne Rice,

I've been really wretchedly nasty in regards to your writing. I'm not going to attempt to excuse my behavior; I'd just like to offer my sincerest apologies. I read 'Interview' several years ago and genuinely enjoyed it; I also found the first book of the Mayfair Witches series to be a worthwhile read. After a while, I became some kind of literary snotfest on legs, and lost the ability to see the depth and intelligence in your writing. I really was interrogating the texts backward, and it showed. In any case, I'll be revisiting your books with an open mind and a thesaurus, to better educate myself on the subject of well-written fiction.

With Genuine Affection,

Jane

I've just sent this letter to Anne Rice. I think we all should make a concerted effort to put things right with people who've been w**ked. This 'new leaf' business is good stuff.

Dear Anne Rice,

I have realized my sins, and confess myself unworthy to read thy books. I promise not to sully thy literature with mine unclean eyes.

Exactly! We were total bad eggs, the lot of us. Trashing on perfectly good literature. I'm hoping she can find it in her heart to forgive us...

I had to post my letters in my own personal journal, because, to my shame, my hate has spread beyond fandom to politics and real-world corporations. I only hope that my life can serve as an example to others of how fandom hate can infect every other area of your life. I will make it my life's mission to witness to others now, because I want to share the sparkly love-loveness that has infected filled my soul with such yummy bliss.

Don't let your shame weigh you down- we've all been there! The important thing is that you've got love in your heart and you're sharing it with people.

*sniffles* Thank you so much for your heartfelt support! I just-- I know I've been such a bad example for my children. I can only hope that it's not too late for them. And it's hard, because my own husband is still caught up in mockery and not thinking about other people's feelings. I haven't decided whether to leave him yet; that doesn't seem like a very love-filled thing to do, but I don't want him to set a hateful example for our children. What's a reformed w**ker to do?

Difficult call. I think that lingering in the hopes of changing him isn't necessarily the most constructive way to love somebody... On the other hand, maybe he just needs someone to break the cycle of hatred and w**k for him.
Sorry I can't be more helpful.

Dear Anne Rice,

I'm sorry I said you were a disease that infected Laurel K. Hamilton. Both you and Ms. Hamilton are wonderful writers, full of ideas that no author has ever used before! I am sure your book about Jesus will make us all true believers!!

Dear Anne Rice,

I wish you and Lestat many years of happiness together. I am truly sorry that our intrusion caused Dickens to become an issue in your relationship with Lestat.

Also I am sorry that I laughed when someone said the only thing you had in common with Dickens is that you both write like you get paid by the word. I know that isn't true. Because I know perfectly well you get paid advances per book. Also, you have more than that in common with Dickens. He was in a train wreck, and you are one.

Also I am sorry for the hostility in that last line. Those responsible have just been sacked.

Maybe I most certainly am not. I am but a humble secretary. What will your Ph.D be in?

Lord of the Rings: Appropriation, Reinvention and Adaptation. Books, films, fandom.

Flee while you still can.

Why would I flee? That's one of the best Ph.D topics I've heard of, EVER, and I habitually surround myself with grad students!

I get a lot of people looking at me funny. *sighs* (I tell you, you haven't lived until you've explained Hobbit slash to a bunch of university lecturers *g*)
