Bow down.
First time wanker, long time snarky bitchy female commenter.

What started out as an innocent photoshop thread for the latest "Harry Potter" cover, soon descended into the depths of thinly veiled antisemitism and endless arguments as to the correct spelling of "defense," "criticize" and "rationalization" which really was just about Stupid American vs. Snobby British.

Americans think these words are misspelled. However the poms did come up witht he actual language. So I would say that the pommy spelling of the words is correct (and subsequently you yanks are wrong :)

Which is responded in turn with:

*sigh* people, dialects happen, and languages branch. They're both correct. This is a silly debate.

Then there's the wank on the cover itself, when guy points out:

My reasoning for this is a bit silly: American shoppers don't read the titles, they just go for the pictures, so putting Harry on makes it totally obvious (I'll bet heaps don't even know the title of the next book, just that it's got Harry Potter on it). While the rest of the world is more civilised and actually reads titles (Yeah ok I'm being cheeky :)).

Those damn smilies look double-chinned, fucking heathen.

America won't take such a jibe laying on our fat asses! We must respond in turn with the all inclusive:

Yes. You're right. Americans are stupid.
Which is proven by the fact that we harnessed electricity, pioneered modern mass-production, invented the microchip, then personal computers, and ultimately facilitated the development of the Internet, all so foreigners could log on and tell us how stupid we are.

Oh my!

There's even more I could point out, such as this:

I think it's because pix like that (british cover) remind some Americans (especially certain ones with tatooed numbers on their arms) of images like this...

Whomever could you mean? Oh! Jews? Goddamn, we so ROCK.

Just go, boggle.

Meanwhile I have to get back to controlling the media...

(thanks to Katemonkey for the link...)

Ask not for whom Rikoshi weeps...

He weeps for himself. And the rest of humanity, while he's at it...

Is there NOTHING the "Harry Potter" fandom can do without turning it into a wankeriffic epic?

I think Fark.com is at its wankiest whenever a thread about fat people, politics, or Britney Spears shows up. Those three topics never fail to bring the wank there. Much like the internet as a whole, come to think of it...

Dude, the HP wank i'm waiting for is when the book comes out and all the people who get a copy first start squeeing about it on LJ. Then we'll get the envy from people who couldn't get a copy right away, and the inevitable spoiler someone will post that's not LJ-cut and the resulting screams of, 'you ruined what i've been waiting for for over a year!'.

Not that i want to be spoiled myself about what happens either, but there's bound to be some good wank out of it.

Try three years. And spoilers are already getting out (supposedly, they might just be junk) so the wank is already starting. I'm just avoiding everything Potter related until I finish the damn book.

a subsidiary of the US publisher. we only got the books a few days ahead of street date, and they were counted daily to be sure no one snuck out with an early copy.

*blink*

Isn't it Europeans (specifically their governments) who tend to be extraordinarily senstive about anything that has a resemblance to Nazi propoganda? I'd think that the UK cover would be given more of a hairy eyeball in Europe than in the US . . . due the the wonderful nature of our education system, I'd never seen a example of the Nazi eagle until that thread. I was thinking that the UK (adult) cover was pretty . . .

The uk adult colour actually reminds me of the (v. american) John Grisam covers. For the record I prefer the uk OOTP covers by far, but I hated all the covers for CoS and PoA. Since this book is the size and weight of an XX brick I'm sure the cover'll come off before long anyway. (It did after 3 months with GoF...)

Well, I just discovered that, even with shipping, ordering the UK version from Amazon UK will only cost me about fifty cents more than ordering the US version from Amazon US (depending on the conversion rate that the credit card company gives me). That's somewhat tempting . . .

That's terrific to hear. ^_^ Personally, I far prefer the British books to the American, but that's just a personal preference. I picked up my copies of CoS, PoA, and GoF in Greece, and I love them to death. I've been wanting to order a copy of Order of the Phoenix from Amazon.uk, but I've not gotten around to it yet. And since you just posted that it'd only cost .50 more... >D

Sweet.

*grumble*

I wish that the US book stores could make the UK versions avaliable as well as the US versions. While I understand that some people really have no desire to figure out British slang, my undergrad degree is in British literature. I can read British slang about as easily as American slang.

The ham-handed "translations" of Terry Prachett's work by Harper-Collins really disgusted me. Rather than improving, it's gotten worse as the series has gone on. Typically I can identify what the original Britspeak was, and if I'm noticing the "translation" it's because I'm wondering how the hell this came from that.

I don't understand why they don't just sell the UK version and not make a US version. When I was little I read the Five Dolls series by Helen Clare and in American editions, there was a glossary in the back of the book so American kiddies learned that noughts and crosses=tic-tac-toe, colour=color and torch=flashlight. I mean, it's all English, isn't it, even though it's different forms.

Some of those covers amused me, particularly "Mr. Kotter" (is still looking... )

I'm told the Canadian editions are the same as the UK editions, and they're not hard to get on the Web.

I found UK hardcovers of Books 2 and 3 at MediaWest for $5.00 each. If I may: SQUEE!

Not to move the wank over here, but how is pointing out that the phoenix on the British adult cover looks like the Nazi iron eagle "thinly veiled anti-Semitism"? It sounded to me like the guy was just saying that using that cover art was a Bad Idea. Which I wholeheartedly agree with.

Now the spelling/nation flames, those are wanky. Particularly the "Thomas Edison was Canadian" one.

I thought that the wank was the person who implied that the UK cover couldn't be used in the US because certain US residents would go ballastic over its resemblance to the Nazi iron eagle. My belief is that few people in the US would catch the reference--probably far fewer than in Europe.

It's not necessarily that the cover is a bad idea, but that the people that would throw a fuss are those with "numbers on their arms" rather then say, straight out, what he means, he puts it this way:

I think it's because pix like that (british cover) remind some Americans (especially certain ones with tatooed numbers on their arms) of images like this...

Rather than say: "those with jewish heritage".

I dunno, I could be overly sensitive and then that just proves his point.

Sigh, I suck.

I went there for awhile, then realized how much I can't stand unmoderated message boards (and ppl hoo kant sp3l). If I want to see a good Photoshop contest with intelligence involved, I can go to the TWoP Pixel Challenge (the latest one is the one linked).

In the meantime, wank on!
