Underwater Wank-- All the Cool Kids Do It!
Apparently, Godawful Fanfiction is at it again, with their poodles o' war going head to head with fangirls over Maya's popular fic Underwater Light. Watch Draco-bashing, Slythering-thrashing, general scorn at the concept of some characters having more than one dimension to them, absolute shock over the fact that some people write slash and even manage to pair (OMG!) enemies together, and quite a bit of whining about what Out of Character and God Awful really mean.

It all begins here and doesn't end for a while! Passive-agressive bitchery has never been more fun!

(Incidentally, though I've never read Maya's popular Underwater Light, I'm a scarily huge fan of her excellent 'fic Flame and Shadow. Because even the losers get lucky sometimes.)

Frankly, I think UnderwaterLight!Draco is so blatantly, flamboyantly out of character that I tend to respect Maya for it. His mischaracterization goes past "Wahhh, he'd never do that" and into "Ooh, totallydifferentperson/Harry! They're so cute!"

You know, I don't even mind the ludicrously OOC Draco - you have to make Draco fairly OOC just to make him bearable, and she doesn't go that much farther than a lot of others do. But I absolutely cannot get past the ludicrousness of the premise. The Triwizard Tournament is held... again! At Hogwarts... again! With all the same tasks... again! Never mind that the element of surprise and the ability to figure out clues in an integral part of of tasks. Never mind that anyone old enough to compete would have been at Hogwarts for the first tournament and remember everything in detail. Never mind that HARRY HIMSELF HAS ALREADY COMPLETED ALL THESE TASKS AND ALLOWING HIM TO COMPETE AGAINST OTHERS WHO HAVEN'T WOULD BE MONSTROUSLY UNFAIR.

I get that she wanted to rewrite the pivotal scene so Harry pulls Draco from the lake instead of Ron, but she just handled it so amazingly badly. She's a decent writer, and despite some other plot holes I could quite enjoy the story otherwise, but it's just such an incredibly stupid premise that I can't get past it. And it bugs me all the more because what I have read tells me she's q good enough writer that she should know better.

It's actually Harry's character that bugged me the most when I tried to read this fic. Fanon!Draco I can tolerate when written entertainingly enough, I've recently found out. But Harry in this fic just made me want to smack him. Not in a good way, either.

It's an enjoyable fic to read though I haven't caught up with it in some time, but in character? Nope.

Then again, I'm not sure I've ever read a H/D where they're in character.

What makes this fic GA is that there is canon rape.

Wow. If UL is canon rape (and I'm not even a fan here) then I'm surprised the GA boards haven't crashed due to the other 99% of HP fanfiction that therefore qualifies.

GA's really desperate for wankery fics these days, aren't they?

*shrug* I like UL. I mean it's not like Draco just falls into Harry's arms and it's OMGTOOBYLOVE from the first chapter. Maya does a pretty good job of having Draco fight whatever the hell he's feeling for Harry, I'd expect that from canon Draco(even if he was in love with a woman).

I just wish she'd finish it *pout*.

Wow, that story's terrible.

The plot, as has already been pointed out, is full of holes. Harry is completely out of character -- I agree with the kid on the GAFF board Draco is completely fandom. What I read left me completely bored and unmoved. Two thumbs down.

I like Harry/Draco, in that I like all ships. I'll read anything if it's written well and moves me emotionally. This was just -- Christ, I couldn't even finish the first chapter. All of Harry's "thoughts" made me want to reach out and smack him and Rita Skeeter the writer.

What stupidity! I mean, of course, Maya's characters are OOC. That's the whole freaking POINT. Unlike some other writers of Fanon!Draco, Maya has never been a pretentious twit who claims to be writing the gold standard canon fanfic. She's quite open about the fact that she's writing Fanon!Draco and having way too much fun doing it.

For Eng lit geeks, complaining that Draco is OOC in Maya's fics is about the equivalent of complaining Pamela is OOC in Fielding's 'Joseph Andrews.'

As common sense would dictate, you don't have to like it, but there's no point criticising it for not being something it doesn't claim to be.

This KVH person needs to sloooowly step away from the Harry Potter books, hands raised. Then perhaps she should have a bit of a lie-down somewhere cool, with iced tea and valium.

I dislike horrible fanfiction as much as the next girl, but seriously. Getting frothy at the mouth over Underwater Light? It's well-written, has consistent in-story characterization, is tons of fun, and has clever snappy dialogue. Even if you've got a gripe with the characterizations (I can understand that, though don't get me started on the shrieking knee-jerk "OOC!!!!" HP harpies), this is hardly godawful.

Someone should remind KVH that one's personal dislike of something does not automatically make that thing crap. I hate that shit. And her nasty personal attacks on the people that disagree with her opinion are just wanktastic.

Fun wank!

See I didn't know that and that makes me like Maya more.

There's this one person in the fandom who thinks their Draco is the END ALL BE ALL of all Draco's and I feel like telling this person to STFU. They aren't on my flist, but they are on my friends of friends flist.

I also hate when a fanficer writes a masterpiece H/D fic and then because they write THAT fic, everyone praises all their other H/D stuff. I read this one fic that made me CRY and then I read another H/D fic by this person and it was SO FUCKING BAD and OOC that I had to scrub my eyes with sandpaper. I'll never forgive them for writing that piece of shit.

Well now that we've talked about H/D what should we talk about next? Snarry? The pups?(R/S), Ronsy? XD

Not sure I've ever really had a wank to call my own before. But I'm pretty sure I know what to feed it - that'd be my clever idea of posting on the boards. :) They sent me to fandom on the special bus.

While regretting that, it *is* interesting to read most of the opinions, and it has forcibly reminded me of my intention to rewrite that first chapter.
Thanks for the kind words about F&S, by the way.
