Mugal posts this on harrydraco:

Hello sorry to bother but i wanted to know if there was anyother person who is a Harry Potter 's fics fanatic but who actually has never finished at least the first one of JKR 's books?Because I started to read the fics then when i tried to read JKR's books i got upset about the injustice towards Slytherin House and the blatant hypocrisy of most of the gryphindor characters.

Some people freak out, some people confess to not having read the books either (a lot of Harry/Draco fics suddenly make sense now) and lots of people mock. As for me, I think "troll" but am persuaded otherwise by her follow-up post, which seems sincere.

It's small, but amusing.

I actually did the same thing with Gundam Wing. I read a lot of fic, watched 5 random dub episodes, read a lot more fic, then started writing myself. o_o No one ever complained.

I've always suspected that about six people in that entire fandom had actually seen the entire show. Most people had only seen the first four.

I've heard that the dub was rather painful...

I was in the GW fandom for a while, and most (but not all; there were a few really good ones) fanfiction was hideously OOC. Mostly because this was before you could download anime, and most fanfiction were based on other fanfiction.

Okay, I've read all the Harry Potter books, and I still wouldn't write HP fic because I wouldn't trust myself to get it right (well, that and the fact that I'm really not into HP as a fandom). And these people haven't read them at all? WTF.

I was on a mailing list involving a Harry Potter pairing, and I pointed out to someone that their challenge involved making the characters OOC. She replied, "I never read the books and I wouldn't know canon if it bit me in the ass. I saw the movies but they're nothing I'd want to watch twice. I just like the fanfic."

I was pretty dumbfounded by that one.

People are writing fanfics that have not read the books? That explains a lot and makes me wonder how they can really be fans. I always thought that was a bit important if you wanted to consider yourself a real fan.

Holy crap! I remember this shit back when FF7 first came out -- fangirls saw Sephiroth and *bam* they were off! Didn't know anything about the story, had no intention of playing the game, but oooh, they wanted to write about the pretties.

I especially loved when they'd say just about that in the headers of their fics. Like a nice big fat warning to STAY THE HELL AWAY.

Let me see if I've got this right:

A British woman writes up characters that have never existed before. Some people come along and decide that she didn't do it right. They take the characters she created and rewrite them the right way.

Well, thank goodness. I'd hate to rely on an author to learn more about their own characters. What a ridiculous notion! If JKR doesn't stop writing them incorrectly, she should be ostracised from general society and forced to live on an island with big hammers and ornery woodpeckers. Why on earth won't she learn to cater her creativity to my tastes?! The nerve!

...right.

I swear, if I hear one more person say "JKR is a bad writer," I'm going to pop a blood vessel involuntarily.

Ye know, with series [particularly anime/comics] with episodic plots that generally have little influence on the outcome, sure, you might pull that stunt, only follow one episode in every five, and still get the idea.

...but in a book series whose fans seem to wank over the true subtext of the unearthly preposition between two character's names, and the way in which it was used on page 294, row 15? In a fandom wherein fangirls have pairing-essays that extract every dialogue line char A has exchanged with char B? In THE fandom where loonies calculate the astral position at the time of Harry's supposed birth, only to get his astrological chart and write him more "ICly"?

Well, something tells me you mightn't get away with that.

Except if you're Cassie Claire, case in which, here, have a new iPod for your whacky OOC characterization!

...

That explains so much HP fanfic.

In fact, knowing that people do that, explains so much LotR fanfic, too. Holy crap. I stopped mass-producing fanfic once I was old enough to be worried about OOCness and shamed at my inability to write some characters IC. How do these people do it?!

It also explains the amount of badfic out there. Too bad we can't blame everything wrong with fanfics on that and destroy those people.

Oh dear ... I ... sort of did this when I was young. I'd watched only the dubbed episodes of Sailor Moon but wrote really horrible crossover fic with all of the senshi. Thankfully nobody really encouraged me.

But to outright read the books, not like them because you wish character X was the real star and continue to write fic anyway? The fanon, it buuuuuuuuuuurns!

what we need is a new term....'cause if these people aren't FANS of the original work (as in, haven't READ/seen it), there is no way what they write can be fanfic. fanfanfic? naf-fic? cifnaf?

"and yes you can still be a fan of Harry Potter without liking the books much."

Uhm. No. She's just a fan of the fanfic. She likes the fanfic. Being a fan implies you like something a lot. She doesn't like the books, she doesn't seem to care much for the movies either.

This is just... mental. Fanficwriters who have no clue of canon? That's just a load of wrong right there. I mean, I can understand people getting into something through fanfic (I will happily admit that it was fanfic that made me go 'hmm, maybe I should watch Stargate SG-1 on a regular basis' and I have been happily bitching away at Stargate ever since.) but to not like the source and still claim you're a fan? That's just weird.

Did anyone catch this gem of stupidity?

That said, some fanfiction is better than the books but I guess its a moot point as the ideas wouldn't have come without the books.

...

If you hear a loud bang within the next ten minutes, don't panic. That will just be my brain exploding because it simply refused to try and process that statement and came to the conclusion that suicide was a better alternative.

Seriously though, what the fucking fuck?

Ah, I love me some Harry Potter wankage. My fandom doesn't disappoint, it doesn't.
