Mariah Carey is a Fandom, Yeah?
What happens when you combine a meglomaniacal musical diva looking to score some free publicity, a homeless man used as a prop, and a Livejournal community dedicated to dirty celebrity gossip that also, strangely enough, seems full of homeless advocates and those who think that the homeless (and I quote) "smell like piss, yell at people and sometimes follow and try to start shiet"???

A wank this strange, apparently! Seriously, it's the only one of its kind that I've ever personally witnessed. It's like the Mad Libs of wank-- it must be seen to be experienced. It all begins with one poor sap opining that "homeless people freak the shiet out of me...especially at night. propz to [Mariah Carey] going that close to him" and just explodes after that.

Addendum to the wank. Apparently, later in the thread, there's some freakin' idiot poor soul who valiantly tries to stem the tide of disgust against Mariah Carey by claiming, hell, who doesn't take pictures of the homeless every once in a while? It wasn't as though she was hurting him!!1

Yeah. Just... yeah. I had no idea that taking photos of the homeless was the new "in" thing" for tourists, but hey, I haven't traveled for a bit. Who knows what's in vogue nowadays?

I love the people going on and on about how all homeless people are crazy because a few obviously disturbed individuals have yelled at them on the street. Yes, I'm sure it was traumatic for you. Perhaps you should talk about with your therapist. Or maybe you just need a long hot shower in your own bathroom and then a nice cup of hot tea in front of the TV. I'm sure that when the bum who yelled at you goes back to his dirty blanket under the overpass to drink rotgut until the voices stop thinks about what he did, he'll be very very sorry he ruined your morning commute.

And have any of these people ever actually been to a shelter in a large city? Most of them are not sunshine and lollipops. It can be more dangerous to sleep in a shelter than on a park bench.

I think the problem with people thinking that most homeless people are crazy is because the ones you notice usually are. I used to think that, because the only ones I'd ever (thought I'd) seen/heard were the "shouting and attacking random people" breed. Then, after I'd expressed this thought, a friend took me on a walk around the closest city, and pointed out some people he knew were homeless- they were just quietly going about their business, maybe a bit dingy, but other wise as unnoticable as anyone else.

Of course, my perception was probably shaped by the fact that I live in out in the sticks, and if a transient gets all the way out there, 9 times out of ten they are not someone one can associate with safely.

Also: I've heard Mariah Carey was insane, but I've never been privy to the exact details. Could you alleviate my curiosity?

Well, I've had a few homeless nutsos follow me, harass me and otherwise freak me out, but usually these guys were whackjobs and I've met just as many quiet, respectful ones too.

Hell, one even followed me almost all the way home because after I gave him $5 for a shelter he thought I'd give him more and made an effort to try and get me to give him what I had. Unfortunately, after threatening to call the cops and him running away, that was the last time I gave anyone money who was panhandling in the street. I'll give over food (usually rejected) but not money. It's sad that a few arses made it so I don't care to give out my hard earned cash to help someone who needs it. Instead I opted for giving cash to charities that help the needy and homeless. Safer that way.

So, I can understand where dirrtymex is coming from, I just think his blanket assessment was a bit much.

Where I live there's a serious homeless problem (drug and alcohol problem too - the corner where I live is referred to as Crystal Corner and is also the best place to get other drugs in the city) and after a while you just learn to keep on walking. Mind you, if I see somone strung out a bit too much or passed out on the street, I do tend to call 911 to get them help in case they overdid it. I'll even stay with them until that help arrives.

It's not always appreciated - by the person I'm trying to help. One guy cursed me out after the paramedics arrived and took are of him. Sigh.

Well, not to defend Mariah, but those don't look entirely real to me. Granted, I'm no photoshop expert, but the fact that she's in the exact same pose in both pictures is highly suspicious.

The homeless guy looks like he's about two seconds from slapping her upside the head in the second picture. I'd pay him $50 to do it.

And I see she's in her customary pose. I heard somewhere that she has a thing about the right side of her face....she thinks it looks better than the left, so she will only be photographed from that side. It wouldn't be so funny, except in some of the pictures I've seen of her she's practically contorting herself to make sure only the right side of her face is shown.

Obviously you haven't been in San Francisco. Tourists love taking pics with the more outlandish homeless, especially those on the Wharf. It's getting to the point that when I show people around the city, they remember (and want to go see) the homeless people. "Oh, there's the transvestite with the umbrella!" "I want to see the scary man with the bush costume!" And, of course, you must get a picture of the guys with crazy signs. "WHY LIE? I'M GOING TO BUY BOOZE" is a big favorite.

Maybe it makes me a bad person, but I agree with the poster...it certainly doesn't hurt the homeless, especially if you chat for a bit and give them money or food. The only bad reaction I've seen was from the Umbrella Transvestite. He flips the fuck out if you try to take his picture or look at him directly. So you just act polite (and smart) and leave him alone. No big.
