He will strangle you with your knitting circulars!
Does knitting count as a fandom? It should.

Woman posts with an lj-cut that says "My husband's going to kill me" about her new yarn purchases, fairly straightforward. Except she's either battered, twisted, or oblivious to other people's pain. Reasonably polite discussion ensues because knitters tend to be polite.

But it is classic language wank with a nice dose of intolerence and no sense of humour.

I have a sense of humour! Fuck you!

The original poster apologises.

Domestic snark comments.

And my favourite grumpy cat sums it all up: "I can't post anymore, I'm busy knitting a burqa."

Wank happens when someone uses an innocuous phrase and other people jump in to take it so damn literally that one wonders whether they defy all laws of astrophysics to believe in "sunrises" and are still wondering exactly how now brown cow. Plus, political correctness -- always a wanky good time.

Thank you. I was trying to say that, but all that would come out was 'how can you not see the wank?'

And I so wanted to use my knitting icon....

Historically, knitting wanks (yeah, we've had a few) tend to go in otf_wank. But, you know, whatever.

I don't think the OP meant to offend anyone, but hopefully now she'll realize that maybe that isn't something to joke about. Homicide, especially spousal homicide falls into that category for me, especially on such a public forum.

The complete lack of anything resembling a sense of humor about this confuses and frightens me. *cries*

Me too. Oh noes, not free speech! Anything but that! One must only say things that will never, ever offend anyone, even those with abnormally delicate sensibilities.

That would restrict all Internet publications to weather reports and mathematical formulae. Until someone complained about minus signs being phallic and plus signs not being a strong enough yonic equivalent, and then the meteorologists win the Internet, literally.

"---- is going to kill me" is an idiom, and any native or at least fluent English speaker who fails to understand that either has a legitimate neurological problem causing her to take things way too literally, or is stupid.

How stupid. It's getting to where you can't say anything without offending someone on the internet. Her husband probably just teases her about all the yarn, I know mine does.

I was teased in elementary school. Every year, scores of teased children commit suicide. Your comment about teasing offends me.

Of course, I'm only teasing.

"How stupid. It's getting to where you can't say anything without offending someone on the internet."

Yeah. In real life, it usually takes a little work to offend someone that moronic. And I love the playground monitor mentality here: "Ideally, it would be nice if folks were more mindful when they say these sorts of things."

I'm so, so, so sorry you're offended by Kwispy's choice of idiom. I could just kill myself over the mental anguish it caused you.

I find that, usually, the best way to deal with people who are that humorless, sour and just plain stupid is to ignore them. Don't answer their lemon-faced nonsense.

How anybody could get offended and sniffy about "abuse" when hearing "My husband's gonna kill me" is beyond me. Hasn't "[blank]'s gonna kill me" been an American idiom for like, decades now? Where was this woman raised, in a bomb shelter?

I'm currently working as a cashier. I have to ask people if they want the store's brand card and a ton of the women I ask answer, "If I did that my husband would kill me!" Apparently this must mean my area either has a large population of battered women or a large population of insenstive women.

Point #1: Motherfuckin' LORDY, it's just a saying! I once said my teacher was gonna kill me because I accidentally got tomato sauce on a library book. Does this mean she's an abusive teacher? No, IT'S A FUCKING SAYING.

Point #2: Hey, y'know what? Some couples are so tight on money that they MUST decide together if they buy something expensive. Buying a big expensive thing can be rather important to the household as a whole, which is why both partners discuss it. It does NOT mean they have to report to each other. And of course, if you don't like that, then maybe marriage is not for you.

Point #3: Get a fucking grip. Put the knitting needles down and go outside for a while in the fresh air. Alright?

Dude, tell me about it. One woman did say she discussed 'important' purchases, but a ton of impulse purchases can really drain a couple/family budget too.

Word!

And knitting - not so cheap. Used to be - if you wore handknits it was like wearing poverty as a badge - in a playground "Eww - you can't afford proper clothes" kind of way. Now it costs twice as much to make stuff as it does to buy it.

Sadly, that (along with a bad case of "can't be fagged") is one of the main reasons I don't knit any more.

I have people I knit for [*ONCE*] that had the attitude that that stringy thing I spent hours upon hours on, and way too much money on said yarn? Not as good a gift as the real gifts that are store bought.

One nephew I made a Gryffindor scarf for his birthday? Later says he never thought it was something I had made him since it, "looked too good and it was cool!"

Other little nephew I made Gryff scarf for and he and his little buddies all raved over just how much I have to love him since I had to have spent SO much time on it! :O

Guess which one gets whatever he asks for, and which one is never getting anything else I knit?

Why does she say she's a 'clothing-whore'? Whoring is not a joking matter! I'm always so put off by people who use that word so flippantly.

I have to wonder if one of these posters is the crazy vet tech at the vet's office I work at. We all pretty much have to walk on eggshells around her.

Me (to other kennel tech): Joe, if you don't stop being such an asshole, I'm going to strangle you with this catheter.

Joe: Sorry.

Crazy tech: Could you please not talk about death, even in jokes? This is coming from a woman who was abused by her last boyfriend, okay.

Me: Um, okay?

Of course, she's allowed to joke about killing the stray cats all she wants and god-forbid you so much as say "boo" to her and...
