Cynthia Potts finds fanfic writers writing original fic, and complains about... I can't really tell.

Lee Goldberg FROTHS. His minions sputter along.

The contributors to said e-zine are quietly amused.

For full amusment value, you should know that Cynthia Potts publishes with Torquere Press, an imprint founded by fanfic authors and other fen.

Beautiful. A wank so self-fulfilling, even the Circle of Life can't top it.

Lee Goldberg and his pack of pretentious writer friends are wanking. Again. Don't they ever get tired? Shouldn't it begin to burn after a while? Or are they using extra strength wanker lube?

And Cynthia... you aren't making yourself look credible. Not at all. Bravo.

So lets see...Lee bitches about fanfic writers not writing orginal fiction; fanfic writers write orginal fiction; Lee bitches about that too.

My conclusion: Lee needs an enema (or five) to get his head out of his ass.

I don't even want to imagine the state of his boxers/computer chair/keyboard.

Damn, I hope he pays his cleaning lady well. I wouldn't touch his laundry/computer area without a biohazard suit.

That was in fact worth a guffaw or two. Though reading the discussion on Ms. Potts' blog, it looks like she wasn't aware of TP's fandom connections. Which, if you're not in fandom, is actually not that hard to miss - most Torquere writers, including the owners and editors, write under pseudonyms that are separate from both their more well-known fannish pseuds, and their real names. Many of the writers are fannish, but not all of them, and I'd imagine Cynthia Potts wasn't the only one who came in through completely mundane channels. (To which I say go Torquere; it's a sign of business success for a bunch of folks I really like.)

(That said, still funny - just because she's not being hypocritical doesn't mean it's not ironic as all hell.)

So Cynthia publishes with an e-publisher and runs with Lee's pack?

So fanfiction really is practice for writing...if you want to write for an online magazine featuring homoerotic stories.

I have a vague feeling that Lee's pack probably doesn't consider e-publishers to be real publishers, and thus, the writers they publish aren't real writers, and homoerotic stories aren't real literature.

Cynthia, sorry, but you're not a Real Arteest either. Better find a new pack to run with.

I must confess to not having bothered to read Lee & co's self-aggrandising bullshit for fear of aneurysms, but am I the only one who sees a little homophobia lurking in the bit that [info]pepperlandgirl4 quoted?

Also, I found it amusing that Cynthia commented in [info]makesmewannadie's journal thanking her for being rational and telling people not to argue with the troll pack.

The number of people worldwide into a particular segment of fanfic would probably have trouble filling a bar for a Thursday night set by your average garage band. Those who read it are even fewer.

BWAAAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAAAA!

Oh, man, someone better tell the Harry Potter, LOTR, Star Wars, and varied anime fandoms that. I'm sure they'd be surprised.

I first found out about Lee a year or two ago at Godawful Fanfiction. If I remember correctly, he barged onto the GAFF boards with the mistaken impression that they were anti-fanfic in general, and proceeded to get pwned like a greased-up, spread-eagle Wilt Chamberlain groupie. I see little has changed. And after following all his wankery I'm still not sure what exactly he does. What does he write? Is it any good? Should I give a good goddamn?

Dear Mr. Goldberg: You're not as famous as you wish you were. At least not for your writing.

I think he's sick of people trolling there. He's locked the journal down. The endless fascination Fandom Wank has with him is amusing. Now the trolls move on to Ms. Potts. Is there only one politically correct view to have on fanfic? And everybody else has to either toe the line or keep buttoning things down to avoid harrassment?

No need to answer.

My favorite part on the Lee wank was when a fanfic hater compared fandom to Led Zeppelin. "They're loud, but there's only four of them."

It seems unlikely to me that Lee cares whether he is on fandom wank now, tomorrow, or forever. He is not in fandom. Only those in fandom care about fandom wank.

Hands up, everyone who wants to make him an honorary member of fandom? He's got the meager social skills, he's got the tenacious arguing style, he's even got a big ol' sheaf of fanfic--he could be Geeky Fanboy Type 23, subset "I'm not really a fan, I just act exactly like one."

Oh Lord, I can't not involve myself in new Goldberg wank.

Lee claims that he was "assailed" by a rabid fan lynch mob when he started writing for seaQuest. What he doesn't mention in his blog is that he made first contact, not the fans.

Anyone who watched seaQuest DSV in its first two seasons can attest to the drastic shift the series took when it entered its third season. Characterization went out the window, previously established relationships that were established in canon (not in fanfic, as Lee claims) were ripped asunder (here I refer specifically to Lucas and Captain Bridger's character-defining bond, as well as Lucas and Ben Krieg's friendship) for no particular reason, and the entire seaQuest world itself was turned on its head thanks to a convenient fastforward in time. The fans, predictably, thought it was crap and spent a good amount of time bitching on fandom forums about it.

Lee, somehow or another (it's entirely possible that some fans wrote to him directly, I'm not sure) learned of the forum discussions, and took it upon himself to wade into the fray under the pretext of "answering fans' questions" which is Lee-speak for telling them to fuck off and die for not understanding his ARTISTIC VISION. Things degenerated quickly and an all-out flame war erupted in which Lee flung just as much shit as any of the fans.

Eventually, to calm things down, the producers told the fans they had permission to do whatever the hell they wanted (this referred specifically to fanfic) just as long as they'd calm down and stop sending hitmen to the production staff's houses.

Lee has hated the seaQuest fans with the fiery passion of a billion suns ever since, and by extension, fanfic, because OMFG THEY WON and what's more, dared to suggest that their fanfic was truer to the show than his scripts were (which is the basis for his statement in his blog that fans said he should look at their fanfic).

Since that time, he's been on a one-man crusade for revenge. Recently in one of his last fanfic rants, he posted a link to a journal which belonged to a seaQuest fanfic writer (who is a friend of mine) in an attempt to humiliate her in particular and discredit fanfic writers in general. He claims someone "sent" the link to him, but it's rather obvious that he continues to follow the seaQuest community and takes every opportunity to fire pot-shots when he can.

If you've ever wondered why he spends so much time bitching about fanfic and fans, well there you go.

Too bad Widdle Wee locked down his thread *koff* CHICKENSHIT *koff* because I'm sure this so-very-entitled nancyboy would have resurrected Teh Wank quicker than Lazarus:

There are also plenty of fanficcers who aren't all that keen on homoerotic fiction (mainly written by virginal women - yes, like they'd have ANY clue...), who are hardly homophobic (and may even be gay ourselves) and who are rather fed up with sharing their lot with this bunch of self-absorbed megalomanics. Regardless of fanfic's rightness or wrongness, I doubt many people would have a problem with it if it weren't for slashers' militant attitudes. They are clueless, unapologetic and arrogant and give the rest of fandom a worse name than it might already have had. I have no problem with slash itself, but wholeheartedly believe the people who write it and read it tend to go far beyond the pale in overstepping their rights and bounds.

Because you know, women have NO RIGHT to write about gay men.
