Fanficrants Wank

[info]bell_witch claims that men are all commitment-phobes. Wank ensues.

Quote of the wank: You're just chock full of happy thoughts for the human race.

Did this start out as a slash related post? Yes it did!

ETA: bell_witch returns, wanks it some more. Go check it out.

The trouble I have with stuff like that is that even if I agree with the OP, my first instinct is to run out and, say, write a 20-chapter angsty slash fic which climaxes (heh, climax) with a huge white wedding. Because I'm hopelessly juvenile.

Oh, it even comes with biology and historical society references!

I did not say that all men were committment-phobes. Many are, and that is largely due to biology. Just as many women prefer to settle, although that is long-established societal traditions and the fact that a woman who is pregnant and/or caring for a child is often unable to provide for herself and her young. That started thousands of years ago, but it does continue.

Another one for the drinking game. One drink every time someone tries to excuse themselves by citing a science or history book.

I did not say that all men were committment-phobes. Many are, and that is largely due to biology.

Wait...so does this mean that there's a commitment gene on the X chromosome that somehow becomes recessive when paired with Y?

The mind boggles.

I try to stay out of things like that. I've got an MA in anthropology[*] which means I have done far more reading on the subject of human sexual biology and behavior than she can even dream of, and to see someone apply one of the many reproductive strategies is just ... depressing. There's a good theory for why women cheat on their significant others that I'd be tempted to slap on the table if I joined in, but that way lies much wankiness.

[*] which is only useful in life inasmuch it allows me to say "Humans are weird. That's a professional opinion." The phrase "Trust me. I'm an anthropologist" is also good in many situations to confuse people into thinking you have some sort of authority as long as you make a quick getaway before they work it out.

It's interesting that people keep bringing up the idea that "men are genetically programmed to sleep around so as to spread their sperm far and wide", because actual evidence from real life suggests that a pregnancy is more likely to occur if a man sleeps with one woman many times than with many women once each. People who bring this up with relation to fiction tend to be people who don't want to read about men being overly romantic and so complain that it's "unrealistic". What bell_witch means by making these generalisations is "I don't want to read overt romance" as her post makes perfectly clear. If only she could have been honest.
