We mock because we care. Really.
I love this board, and I like a lot of the people on it. But it's become seriously wanky in a case of personal issues between a mod and a poster. I'll 'fess up that I participated a bit - I didn't feel it was fair to make a wank report without at least warning the board that the discussions are getting very wanky, and another retort I made was just after I woke up and before my first cup of coffee. (Never a time when I'm in the best of moods.) I'll be direct quoting here since although I'm linking to the forums and threads on the board, and they're viewable/usable by guests, I can't direct-link to exact posts in question.

It all started when Xei - otherwise known as Xee Metallium, formerly going by Zee Metallium -- joined the boards under her nickname, Xee, and posted an introduction message. (Xei changed her spelling to her current name after some kerfluffling.)

(The intro post is now gone; it was deleted, although older posts remained, it was just Xei's intro post that was gone, and then a bit later, a mod makes a post stating that all old introductions will be deleted to clear up room, and all the older ones, poof.)

There was a bunch of kerfluffling over not just her spelling of her username, which was similar to a moderator's, but one of the things that also wound up being wanked was the definition of "Zerasu No Mikage", and a huge disagreement between Xei and two of the mods broke out over the meaning. The third mod stepped in with the boomstick and basically ruled that the mods were right because they're mods.

Then just a few days ago, Mister M joins the boards, and the question of the definition of "Zerasu No Mikage" comes up again. Felicia chimes in with saying everyone else's definition of it is wrong, and her's is right: "Don't tell me I'm wrong here, either. I'm 100% sure I'm right".

ETA!!: I thought I included this link, but apparently not. Mister M's introduction post with the kerfluffling in question can be found here!

When I step in and say something about the way-over-the-top attitude she's pulling down, I get accused of attacking her when she's not there to defend herself. "You people wear on my nerves, especially when BOTH OF YOU SNAP AT ME WHEN I'M NOT HERE TO DEFEND MYSELF. At least I do it to your face." (I didn't realize that making a post on a message board regarding someone's behavior required them to be actively present on the board at the exact same time, apparently.)

Elsewhere in Pine Valley on the boards, a discussion on the meaning of the Mazoku crest crops up. Again, Xei has an opinion: "I actually took a runic chart to the hierarchy [...] they just translated out into their katakana names", which Felicia vehemently disagrees with: "You can't translate runes meaning like your saying you are. You know that, right?...Or are you just trying to impress me, because I a l337 Occultist? :P", and one thing leads to another, resulting in Xei saying on the next page "I know I don't have any need to impress a girl at least 5 years my junior at least 7000 miles away and still beleives in the concept of being 1337.".

At this point, Zee steps in putting the smack down on Xei: "Five years your junior she may be, but she is a mod here and you are not. Please refrain from insulting and/or trying to appear superior to the admins/mods. Also, since Felicia is right and you can't translate runes into any sort of romanized alphabet, you DO look like a poser who's trying to act "cool." I'll certainly give you the benefit of a doubt and say you just made a mistake or this is a misunderstanding and you're NOT actually any sort of poser, but when my staff is attacked, I defend. Rule #1, people. Be nice. And if you have a problem with ANYONE, staff included, you come to me or another mod/admin. That's...what? Rule #2? It's one of the rules, so obey it."

When Xei responds with: "No offense but I live in Europe (where the runic Futhark alphabet originated!!!) and runes do indeed translate both ways." and even provides a link for reference on what she's talking about.

Zee's had enough: "[your claims are] RIDICULOUS, as well as a blatent lie. ALSO, the fact that you live in Europe means jack about how well you know runic alphabet. I have relatives in Europe who know less than I do. So, here's the gist of this post: You are attempting, pitifully, to make yourself look cool, and when you are called out on the fact that you are spouting bullshit and we know it, you attempt to defend yourself by belittling the staff and using your supposed age, location and occupation as a way to do so. I have doubts that you are in your 20s. I have doubts that you live in Europe."

By this time, I'm checking the boards and just blinking at the tinhattery and wankery going on, and tell them as much, basically translating into "Can't we all just get along?" (Hey, I had to at least try before I reported the wankfest, and so far, nobody's replied to that, the end? We'll see.)

Meanwhile, I'm venting about it over in my JournalFen, and [info]schoenschoen takes a look and convinces me to get off my arse and report the wank.

Is it over? Will Xei get banned? Will the mods calm down? Will the Runic Alphabet determine the fate of the world and whether we all live or die? Tune in tomorrow for the next episode of As The Wank Turns!

Edited to Add: (6-29-03)

This was provided by Tasuki. Since none of them have an account on JF, I felt it was only fair to provide the other information. (Yes, there wasn't anything personal, and I do like them. It was just wankery.)

I understand that the post was made before the incident was resolved but I can't help but want to clear a couple things up, just for the record. First of all, Xei PMed me and asked me to remove her introduction post. This was well before any mischeif broke out across the forum and seeing as her intro post was really old, I figured that it'd be alright. She said people were asking her about it and I didn't see any harm in deleting it. So I did. Unfortunately, I see that as being a mistake right now, but.. que sera sera. Her introduction post was also deleted well before I decided that I would be pruning the introduction forum. Mazoku.org was running low on space so I took it upon myself to tidy up the board a bit by deleting some users who hadn't posted anything in well over a month and had less than 10 posts, and by deleting introduction posts because most of the introductions made aren't really important in the bigger picture.

Second, I just want to point out about the entire rune thing: Zee wasn't trying to say that the runes couldn't be translated into anything at all. She was saying that they can't be translated directly into katakana, which is what Xei said she did. Japanese is a strictly syllabic language, where all sounds are comprised of a consanent and a vowel. ka, ke, ko, ki, ku, for example. "ng" can't be translated at all into katakana for that reason, nor can th, etc. I think that point was seriously over-looked when reading the argument and that's why Zee was getting so frustrated. Xei claimed that the runes translated into names, and as we can see from even Xei's "proof," they don't translate into such. ^^; She would have posted a reply to your post in the fandom_wank community, but anonymous posting isn't allowed and she doesn't have an account there.

Heheheh... I hadn't gone back to your entry to check, but glad you decided to post it anyway.

What's this "Zerasu no Mikage" stuff, though? All I can figure out is that it roughly translates to something like "Zelas' Shadow." Is this something people have extracted from more obscure/inaccessible sources like some of the info books in Japanese or something?

(And I think I recall my friend Irk over at LJ having translated those runes to the generals' respective katakana [back when she was trying to figure out what real sigils Kanzaka-san based his sigils on], too. So this Xei person ain't the only one to say that they do translate.)

MEEP! I thought I included the link to the post in question that had the kerfluffling about that. My bad. Edited the post to correct it, and here it is:

Geez, this Felicia girl needs to take a major chill pill. How'd she ever make mod with that kind of attitude?

Anyway, thanks for clearing that up. For a moment I thought this "Zerasu no Mikage" part was a catfight over some kind of new/"obscure" info or something, not a catfight over a simple fanboy-Japanese title. In other words, for a moment I thought Slayers fandom had taken a turn for the same kind of wanktasticness the Xenogears fandom had back in its heyday. Frankly, I'm not sure which way would it have been more hilarious sadder.

I'm just wondering at this point if they're going to ban me for calling them on the wankery going on. ::snickers:: If they do, I do believe I'll be a tad pissed.

::small grin:: Like I've said, I like a lot of the people on the board, and that DOES include her and the other mods. I piped up because once a moderator is an active party in a fight, they shouldn't be moderating that exact fight.

I've been a mod in forums where I've had issues with a poster and got into fights with them. In those cases, a mod should hand over the right to mod that incident to someone else; you cannot actively moderate a fight you're a primary participant in without it degrading into an abuse of power.

But...Kage does mean shadow. A friend of mine's double checking with her professor and her roommate...who's from Japan. Mikage is not showing up anywhere so far as being a real word; she's checking with people who speak that as a first language first though. -_- And it was that fanboyish phrase in a now-deleted introduction thread that started the animosity.

The only time I've heard the word "mikage" rather than just "kage" myself is as the name of Souji Mikage, a character from the second story arc of the Utena TV series. ^_^;

(Incidentally, that's how I first learned that word meant "shadow." And that along with his surname, it apparently translates to "honorable shadow," which would be very befitting of his character. XD)

That's also the family name in Ayashi no Ceres. Random fact for the day.

As far as mikage *is the friend in question*... I haven't found anything yet. Mi is roughly body and kage is shadow, but I still haven't found anywhere that said mikage was a word. I keep forgetting to corner my roommate about it and Ogawa-sensei isn't replying to my emails. -_-;;;

Hey, wait a minute, Lina's up, actually. Let me ask her... *asks*

OKAY! Official word from a native speaker's mouth:
Lina: "Mikage? It doesn't make sense.
Me: Then it's not a word?
Lina: No. *looks at post* Oh, Mikage? It is a name. 'Beautiful Shadow'. But it's a very rare name.
Me: Thanks! ^_^ *typity-type!*

So there you have it- it only means shadow in the terms of a name, not a word by itself. ^_^ *feels informed*

*gets an update fifteen minutes after she posts from her roommate* Eep! Okay, here's a bit more on the term mikage:

Mikage is another pronounciation of "mitama", which means roughly "spirit of the dead" or "shrine that houses the souls of the dead". Nothing to do with the word 'shadow'. It's cool-sounding, but still does not translate into 'shadow'.

Now, THAT, I would do. I already have a tattoo on my ankle of the kanji for "Maryu" - mostly for Xel and Fil, but I also like the fact that it could be taken to represent Gaav and Valgaav, too. ^_^V Gotta represent the fandom, yo.

Yes, I realize it's wanky to get tattoos from your pet fandom. Even so, I've seen some people with *kick ass* "Blade of the Immortal" tattoos. O_O Besides... kanji kick ass. XD

Man, I once saw a guy with his ENTIRE UPPER ARM covered in a tattoo of the Silver Surfer flying through space doing a power blast. I mean, it wasn't just the Surfer, he actually had space with stars and planets tattooed all around him. O.O;;;

Heh... I knew it had to be someone I knew. I guess I got the sigil thing Irk was doing confused with you and the runes. ^_^;

but what really got me is that the actual meanings of the runes were either inconclusive or death death destruction death.

...well, it's certainly highly appropiate. And I think Phibby sounds like he's got a serious case of OCD there. *LOL*

Did you ever try your hand at the runes for the other generals?

(Just to clarify for the thread; this is a repost of the apparent 'deleted' post above)

On another note... why isn't there a F_W term glossary. I know the majority of the terms, but I've mentioned this wank to a few others I know, and I've been asked several times by various other people NOT in F_W what things like "kerfluffle" and "tinhattery" mean, and of course there's "She-Who-Shall-Not-Be-Wanked".

I'd be happy to slap together a page or even a journal entry that can be linked and referenced if people will submit terminology and in-jokes to me so I can compile them accurately.

If I remember right...

Wasn't Mister E the bloody wanker from The Books of Magic that could go into the future and tried to kill the main character? And had a father who was an uber religious person and had Mister E's eyes taken out of his head, forcefully, for looking at a woman?

They can both be bloody delusional wankers together. >.>;; Along with the Felicia chick.
