Hey, y'all.

Just a few modly announcements.

Some of you may have noticed this by now, but we've been going around notifying people that we're gonna start cracking down on non-work-safe icons. Work safe here is being defined as no exposed genitalia or nipples, or giant curse words. Or overtly sexual situations.

None of that pg, pg-13, nc-17 crap because that is so debatable. Please follow our guidelines. You're allowed to use your nws icons everywhere else on journalfen. Excepting, of course, communities that specifically ban them like us and we'd really appreciate it if you just remember what keyword triggers what when you comment. We don't want to, but we will crack down on you, kay? Thank you.

Second announcement: YOU CAN NOW CONTACT THE MODS (not that you couldn't before, but now you have an email address) so go check out the fandom wank userinfo to get our email as well as finding out Apoplexia's sexual history.

And our final announcement, Hugsnkisses is back. The day right after I finally give up and put her in the missing in action column. Why? Because she sucks.

Well, in that case, do you think you could remove the banner at the top of f_w which says FANDOM WANK in multicoloured letters? Because that isn't terribly work safe. Also the words 'wank' and 'wankers' from the side bar.

Oh, and it'd be nice if people could avoid putting any naughty words in big letters in the subject lines of the wank reports-of-people-being-silly. Because those kind of stand out. Likewise the use of ALL CAPS, or bold, or coloured fonts, or anything else which might draw attention from my boss. Changing the title of the comm, so that 'Fandom Wank Lives' doesn't appear in the browser tab would also be very helpful. I suggest 'Protocols and Techniques' or maybe 'Nature On-Line'.

In fact, it would be best if people would stop posting wank reports altogether, and only post reports of cutting-edge research in neuroscience. Then I could read it at work in complete safety.

Okay. That icon? NWS. Please don't use again.

And that icon is not only WS, but in keeping with a fine F_W tradition.

I hear you, and respect your point of view on such issues. I can see how the word "wank" might be considered "exposed genitalia" or "nipples" or "giant curse words" or "overtly sexual situations." Though there are beaches in certain European countries where women are allowed to walk around with the word "wank" written on a notepad, you have to cover it up with a bikini in most places.

But...perhaps it would be easier if you just stopped reading than if we stopped posting wank. The good of the many outweighs the whining of the one, after all. While we value your patronage, and would gladly use a sanctified knife to sacrifice apoplexia to the splooge god and then paste his head on a pike to keep you around, we believe Ockham's Razor might be a better approach here.

{shrug} I guess it's location dependent. In the UK, it's definitely a curse word. Maybe not a very serious one, but not a very work safe one.

No, I'm pretty sure the whole world still revolves around me. Let me check out of the window for a moment...

I'd consider it an extremely minor one, though, on par with "crap" and "dinglederry."

Actually, that's just an illusion everyone shares. Since you wanted to discuss neuroscience, this fits perfectly. The way it works is that the world actually revolves around the sun. The sun is technically classified as an overblown bunch of hot gas that hurts your eyes to look at. However, this is also the best working definition of most humans as well. So, being human, we just assume the world revolves around us.

Or something.

*raises hand*

Uh, while I don't really care either way as I don't surf at work, I've got to say that "wank" is actually a fairly high level Bad Word in the UK. Like "Don't even consider using in front of boss, elderly grandmother or small children" bad.

It's one of those weird country variances. "Fanny" is shocking over this side of the puddle too.

I think you're blowing this a bit out of proportion.

Most people who are surfing at work are doing so either under an understanding that it's not work-related, and aren't asking for it to be made to look work related. But there's a difference between goofing off and reading something non-work related and having your cubemate look over to see hardcore buttsex or whatever.

Hell, in a lot of offices, you can be turned in for creating a hostile work enviroment if you've got something porny on your screen during work hours. That's sorta the difference.

Clearly, I need to use more smileys. I guess I'm mildly miffed that I apparently have to stop using the default icon I've had since...well, since before f_w moved to JF, I guess. But I'll learn to live with the bitter disappointment, somehow.

:-)

I can totally understand your feelings in having to do this. I've got a couple of female friends who have had guys they work with download bestiality porn and so forth on work computers. In one case, the guy was obsessed with scatophagous porn and used to leave it up on his computer even when important celebrity clients came in.

You could always just read it from your friends page, in which case the banner wouldn't be a consideration.

I find that challenge very easy. There are no surprises. I know exactly that it's going to be there, so I time my opening of the page so that no-one is staring straight at my computer, and quickly scroll down just enough so that the banner is no longer visable. Voila! Problem solved.
