Hey, y'all.

Just a few modly announcements.

Some of you may have noticed this by now, but we've been going around notifying people that we're gonna start cracking down on non-work-safe icons. Work safe here is being defined as no exposed genitalia or nipples, or giant curse words. Or overtly sexual situations.

None of that pg, pg-13, nc-17 crap because that is so debatable. Please follow our guidelines. You're allowed to use your nws icons everywhere else on journalfen. Excepting, of course, communities that specifically ban them like us and we'd really appreciate it if you just remember what keyword triggers what when you comment. We don't want to, but we will crack down on you, kay? Thank you.

Second announcement: YOU CAN NOW CONTACT THE MODS (not that you couldn't before, but now you have an email address) so go check out the fandom wank userinfo to get our email as well as finding out Apoplexia's sexual history.

And our final announcement, Hugsnkisses is back. The day right after I finally give up and put her in the missing in action column. Why? Because she sucks.

How could a passing 100x100 image get someone in trouble? Especially since, to see most of them, the bosses would have to be leaning waaaay over and squinting at the screen, thereby violating the user's privacy, which is another can of worms altogether.

I can see icons fine just looking over someone's shoulder. And I've got crappy eyesight and with my height I'm usually quite a bit away from the screen.

NWS is banned here. But there's plenty of other places to peddle your nws wares.

But the point is that they're still looking where they shouldn't be looking.

Your boss is perfectly within their rights to look at your computer screen.

NWS icons stay banned.

There's legal precedent saying bosses can look through your e-mails. Glancing over your shoulder is nothing compared to that.

Well that fucking sucks.

Although wouldn't someone else using one of the icons in question be more akin to getting a porno spam in your inbox? It has nothing to do with you, after all.

Yeah. It happens, though.

Not that I'm speaking from personal experience or anything...

Major corporations have trigger words or images that automatically block a site.

So wouldn't F_W be blocked already?

For one of my friends it was. The bouncy boobie icon did him in. XD

Where I work it depends. If it's too hard core then yeah they'll block it, they're ok with cuss words though.

See, how would a computer know what the picture displayed on the screen contained?

Mine actually runs through a server that caches everything I've seen. So it's not so much the idea of my boss looking over my shoulder more than our techie having to check it as part of his job.

So far, he's been pretty lenient with me because I'm his assistant, but he can't keep swapping my surfing history indefinitely.

Are you just curious or are you trying to argue against the NWS icon crackdown?

Why is it that every time I've questioned something lately, I'm OMG arguing?

And so was I.

Ok, sorry. I know she had no way of knowing it, but it's happened a lot lately. I'll ask a simple question and people will jump on me for 'arguing' even when it's just when I want to know. When I pursue it, I get charged with 'flaming' even though I'm nice and polite.

Again, she had no way of knowing, and I apologize.

It might be the way you ask. What you consider "simple" can come off as blunt and challenging. Try putting "just curious but..." or something like that at the beginning of your questions.

And if you don't get an answer right away, let it go. The more you keep at a topic, the more you seem like you're challenging the answers you get, even if that wasn't your intention. The more you persist at a subject, the more people will think you have invested in it.

Repeatedly responding with a question (outside of a game of questions) can also be seen as argumentative, even if you're just looking at different angles of the same thing. It can come off like you're pointing out flaws in someone's statement. If your response to someone is the equivalent of "yeah, but..." you've got a good chance of rubbing them the wrong way.

It's really hard to communicate tone over the internet with the lack of nonverbal cues. Yeah, some people are just oversensitive, and some people are just having a bad day. But if a lot of people are telling you you're being argumentative, check the tone of what you've said.

Hope that helps.
