Browncoats Wank
Browncoats, for those of you who don't know, are fans of the cancelled series Firefly and the soon-to-be-released movie Serenity. Nathan Fillion, aka Captain Mal, is the star of said movie and somewhat of a geek himself.

Recently, the first comic book in a three-comic series bridging the gap between the TV show and the movie was released, with three variant covers. They sold out quickly and are going into a second printing.

Our Captain (what? I'm a Browncoat, too.) had a bad experience at an Edmonton comic book shop when he went to get a copy of the Mal cover for his mother and discovered that the cover price had been marked up.

Post subject: Captain Outraged! Edmonton, fall in!
It is times like these that I feel like Malcolm Reynolds. This is something that would surely get you kicked into an engine. I just went to a comic store to purchase the Serenity comic for my mom. The sweetheart that she is, gave her issues (with her favorite character on the front) to relatives who were having trouble tracking one down. Please bear in mind that Canada is a wondrous place where the service industry is polite and helpful, and that this experience is not the norm. The store I chose, which shall remain nameless (Warp 1 Comics), at an undisclosed location (just off Whyte Ave), has the singlemost sanctimonious, condescending, dishonest a$$hole I've had the misfortune of meeting. My brother and I called ahead to find out they had one issue left, but upon arriving, found out they are gouging people $20 bucks for the damned thing! "That's what they're worth." he sneered at me. I asked him to show me a listing of some sort to back it up. "Well, I just know what I paid Dark Horse for it." He wouldn't show me that, either. I am aware that Dark Horse wasn't expecting these books to sell as well as they are, and that they are going into a second printing, but I just picked up three of them two days ago at cover price at another store. My brother piped up with a, "What an interesting attitude you have." Let me tell you folks, this fella had an attitude, and a smirk that you wanted to knock off his face with a baseball bat dipped in dog poop. Of course, my brother couldn't help letting this guy know who he was trying to hose by holding the issue next to my face. "This guy look familliar? This isn't some JoJo off the street! He knows what he's talking about!" Check this out- the reply of this crap-catcher, who shall remain nameless (Darryl) was, (and imagine a dullards voice- how we make people we don't like sound in a story) "Well, then you can call Joss Whedon and ask him." I had to tell this purplebelly that I was being sarcastic when I thanked him for his excellent service, and I don't think he knew what sanctimonious meant!
Wouldn't a smart business man ask me to sign an issue and sell me one at a fair price? Wouldn't that fetch a prettier penny than ripping me off for one issue? Congratulations, dude! You are now on the Browncoat $hitlist.
Never have I tried to wield power in this way, but if being Malcolm Reynolds has taught me anything, it's to follow my over-developed sense of vengeance. BOYCOTT WARP ONE COMICS! If you are in the neighborhood, drop by to tell "the Buttress" that Browncoats don't take $hit from anyone. Tell your friends not to shop there, and lock 'em in the airlock if they do. Copy this post and e-mail it to fellow Edmontonians. Bump it to keep it alive.
Thank you. Thank you for letting me rant. If you feel I'm overboard, please feel free to, as Joss would say, contemplate silently.

The Captain

Edited to be less cruel, and to mention how wonderfully my dear mom was treated at HAPPY HARBOR. Thank you, staff and owners at Happy Harbor. You made my mom's day. Turns out, Warp One tried to hose her, too, by telling her that the Jayne covered issue was a rarity. Love you, Adam B. You ARE a rarity. Nothin' agin you. But will these butt-tards stoop so low as to steal from a woman? For shame, Warp One, for shame.

Some fans rationally debate whether Nathan went too far in posting his rant to the Internet and including the name of the shop. Some say that this particular shop has a reputation for treating customers badly, and they're getting what they deserve. Some call or email the shop to complain.

Another local comic shop chimes in.

An employee at the shop posts about the fans' reactions. The wank flows.

Edited for clarity: Nathan Fillion's post may or may not have been wanky (I'm inclined to say no, myself, but I'm a fan and therefore biased) but the real wank explodes at ivica's journal.

Sounds to me like he's trolling for more internet fame.

Also - why are people shocked that comic stores jack up the prices like that? I have to haul my ass over to Golden Apple if I want anything resembling a decent price on new issues, but like most other comic fen I know, I just wait until the trade paperbacks hit Amazon.

I do love cute-n-geekish Nathan Fillion and he has a valid rant, but if he isn't careful, he might not win at the internets.

I can't muster up any negativety toward him for his post, though, because it's obvious he knows and loves his fandom a great deal. And he was trying to help out his MOM. Awww! - fuzzy_ears

Holy shit.

Warp One? I go there all the time when I'm in Edmonton. My sister was running a convention down here, and Warp One signed up for the vendor's booth...but had to pull out because they are terribly understaffed.

But, um, yeah. Prices there have always been just a wee bit high.

"I used to be a waiter in Vale, Co."

I hope whereever he lives now, it's got a name that's easier to spell correctly. Though I'm not sure it gets much easier than Vail. Maybe that's why he no longer lives there... Left once, tried to return, but there's no exit for "Vale."

"Sometimes rich people would snap their fingers at me and say, 'Don't you know who I am?' and I would make sure to give them the worst service in the world."

Which is why he used to be a waiter in "Vale." It's not a good place to be if you loathe celebrities on sight - doubly so if you're in the service industry.

Yeah, it's times like this, I remember the war... still have to cut my apples instead of biting into them... just like Mal does. Man, that was a tough time in my life... couldn't bite an apple and was charged an extra 50 cents... my life was well near over.

I love Firefly...I played in a damn GURPs game based on it for months this spring... but that's just stupid... and coming from me, that's a lot...

I'd be interested to know (seriously, I manage a bookstore, so I'm curious how this works) whether they have any sort of weights & measures standards in Edmonton. I know some parts of the US do and some don't, though most national corporate retailers will hold their entire company to those standards to make it easier on the stores in locations that do. Also, I'm interested by the comic shop owner saying that they are unable to return books they don't sell. I know we can where I work - we strip the covers off and ship them back for credit - but then I work for a very large corporation. I suppose the publishers are less easygoing with the smaller stores.

Frankly, if I got shitty service from a guy who then lied to me and then insulted me personally, I would also go elsewhere with my business. And then I'd tell everyone I know how badly I was treated, and how dishonestly he ran his business. When I got jerked around by my old bank a couple years ago, I posted about it and a couple of my friends now refuse to do business with them. That didn't get me on FW.

The guy demanded a price that seemed unreasonable. Nathan demanded a reason for the high price, and the guy gave him an obviously false answer. The only thing that makes this wanky (imo) is Nathan Fillion is a celebrity.

Brewing Joss Whedon Massive Dragon Con Wank
(Anonymous)
2005-08-01 02:49 am UTC (link)
Joss Whedon has been slated for a long time at this year's Dragon Con (http://www.dragoncon.org/people/whedonj.html). It was announced for the first time on the Browncoats website (http://browncoats.serenitymovie.com/serenity/index.html) that he would be coming.

Joss says he won't be at Dragon Con and was never been asked to go there. (http://whedonesque.com/?comments=7410) (Check out his reply right under a Dragon Con staffer affirming he WILL be at Dragon Con.)

Other people say differently. (http://www.livejournal.com/community/dragonconbuffy/102773.html)

The real wank is going to hit the fan Monday morning when the Dragon Con staffers come to work to find their e-mail inboxes flooded, but when it explodes it will be HUGE.

Y'know, I tried - very hard! - to work up some sort of indignation or at least a good scoffing for Nathan Fillon for posting like that but ah, hell, the fact that he *posts* to his fandom is so adorable I can't help but like him. And I couldn't even get into Firefly.

Also, if that comic book guy really behaved in that way towards him, he seems to be the original wanker here. Marking up a comic because it's popular is tacky at an original dealer. I realize it's common, especially at smaller retailers (hey, I was in on the beanie baby fad! I saw the bears become fifty dollars for no reason!), but that was a shittastic excuse and honestly, anyone stupid enough to act like that towards the guy that's *on the cover* should expect that maybe, possibly, said cover-guy is going to share his annoyment with the rest of the class. The only thing that's different between this post and every other post ever to come out of a bad_service community is that he happened to have a movie about space cowboys and gay pants coming out when *he* ranted.

I was debating putting this up here, since I'm from Edmonton and most of the blogs I read are posting about this (more aptly, posting links to the rant and then going off about how Darryl is an idiot), but I kept putting it off. I was waiting for a reply from Warp of some sort.

One the one hand, Darryl Minty is an ass. I've dealt with him.

On the other hand... why does everyone in an internet fandom think EVERYONE in their fandom is on the internet? I'm almost positive there are people who a) want to buy the comic b) are in Edmonton and c) don't read the internet stuff on Firefly and thus will not be aware of their outrage.

Ah well. My little city is on Fandom Wank. I can now die happy.

Bah. Tacky on both sides. Getting into a shit-fit with an asshole was bad enough; if he'd probably kept it up, he would've been banned from the place completely whether he was right or wrong. Going online to post about it and point out names and addresses was even worse because it made him look like an attention whore with a grudge.

On the other hand, marking up prices on one's stock like that and acting like an asshole to a customer was just as bad. Especially if that customer is the one guy that could help the shop make more money by signing said comic and making it a more desirable collector's item.

I skimmed the entry too fast the first time and thought it was someone who decided to use that as a screenname, not the actual actor himself. I lose at reading comprehension, apparently. I'm impressed at actors willingly participating in their own fandom, and not just shoehorned into in-stores - it's cute. Still a wank, but bleah.
